‘Mariachi’ refers to typical Mexican street bands as well a musical genre which has been recognized since 2011 on the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Mexicana is a tribute to this vivid music and was a commission from the French cultural association “Lille 3000†as part of the 2019 Eldorado thematic edition. Pjotr Iljitsj Tchaikovsky is famous for his fantastic moving melodies. Different to many of his other romantic Russian contemporaries, Tchaikovsky had a particular feel for the European music taste of music, which made him immensely popular. Hymne an die Nacht is a deeply moving theme by the master composer Ludwig van Beethoven. It is taken from his Sonata No. 23 in F minor, Op. 57 (Appassionata), which he composed between 1804-1806. This theme originates from the second movement of this famous sonata which Beethoven himself considered his best work in this genre. The passion of this sonata inspired Michael Bilkes to make this beautiful arrangement. Hymne an die Nacht is een ontroerend thema van meestercomponist Ludwig van Beethoven. Het is afkomstig uit zijn sonate nr. 23 in F-mineur, opus 57 (Appassionata), die hij componeerde in 1804-1806. Dit thema komt uithet tweede deel van deze beroemde sonate, die door Beethoven zelf werd beschouwd als zijn beste. Het inspireerde Michael Bilkes tot het schrijven van deze mooie bewerking.Die Hymne an die Nacht ist ein bewegendes Thema aus der Sonate Nr. 23 in f-Moll, op. 57 (Apassionata) von Ludwig van Beethoven, welche er in den Jahren 1804-1806 komponierte. At funeral or memorial services and ceremonies, the traditional, slowly marching funeral music, the Tombeau, still plays an important musical role today. In most cases, such musics were created for a specific occasion, like the death of a prince or an artist. That was the case with this Tombeau for wind orchestra, too: Bertold Hummel wrote it after the death of a fellow composer and friend.Hummel was not afraid of expressing his feelings in a wistfully nostalgic funeral music full of tonal beauty which is close to the musical language of the 19th century with regard to form and harmony.In addition to the score and parts, our edition of this moving piece also contains the particell with which Hummel put down the Tombeau on paper in 1998.

The opening movement begins high up with stylised birdsong and moves down through the registers, through Frye’s Motet, to the depths of a tuba solo. The second movement is a slow processional which revolves around a series of chords and leads, without a break, through a tutti passage in octaves to the third, which opens with a trumpet solo and moving through several fast sometimes, contrapuntal episodes to a triumphal arrival of a quotation from a Mass by Jacob Obrecht.
