Very little is known about the two sonatas which appear here in their original keys. They were placed in the library of the Music School in Oxford at the end of the seventeenth century in a form convenient for playing (i.e.unbound). The library was catalogued by Hake between 1850 and 1855 and the sonatas were eventually bound in 1855 with other instrumental and vocal manuscripts of the same period, some of which are dated 1698.

The sonatasare both inscribed on the title page Sonata Violone Solo. Col Basso per l'Organo, o Cembalo. A third sonata bears the words Sonata Violino e Violoncino â?¦ di Giovannino del Violone. Giovannino (=Little, or Young John)musthave been a performer, and although the third sonata has been copied by a different hand, it is conceivable that Giovannino is a connecting link between the three. He cannot, however, be assumed to be theirauthor.

The Violone was a six-stringed instrument with frets, and there is evidence to suggest that the Contrabasso of the same period was similar but probably a little larger; the Violoncino (=Little Violone, orVioloncello) must have been smaller. The word 'Violone' was also used as a collective term embracing all members of the Viol family, which means that the sonatas might well have been written for a tenor or a bass Viol, and notnecessarily a Violone as such. Indeed, when they are played on a Violone, or Double Bass the continuo bass line must be played at a lower pitch than the solo instrument, to prevent inversion of the intended harmony. (The use ofa Violone/Double Bass continuo or 16' organ tone would overcome this problem.)

The editor has added no ornaments or embellishments to the solo part as it appears in the original manuscript. It is open to debate whether aViolone player, owing to the very nature of his instrument, would have used any but the simplest melodic decorations. Nevertheless, the performer should acquaint himself thoroughly with those seventeenth century traditions thatare known today (see Dart.

Michael Haydn (1737-1806), younger brother of Josef Haydn, had been in the employ of Colloredo, Archbishop in Salzburg as Court Composer and Leader (Concertmaster) of the court orchestra. In 1783, he was commissioned - or a better word perhaps - ordered by Colloredo to compose a series of six duets for violin and viola. Due to serious illness, he was unable to complete the series. Haydn was concerned that the Archbishop would cancel his fee. Haydn asked his friend Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) to complete the work by writing the remaining two duets. Mozart composed the duets in a few days, in time to meet the Archbishop's timeline. For this reason, all six duets were delivered under Michael Haydn's name. The present edition is the first that reunites the six duets - naturally with the correct attributions. Included in volume 1: 4. Duet in B flat Major K 424 (W.A. Mozart); 5. Sonata Nr. 3 in F Major MH 337 (M. Haydn); 6. Sonata Nr. 4 in E Major MH 338 (M. Haydn).

This quartet forms part of a major opus whose different works make use of the same tone row matrix characterised by the harmonic interval of a third. Contrasting with the aggressive, expansive piano sonata which also belongs to the opus, its nostalgic tone is a mark of respect for the traditional ethos of string music. Erkki Salmenhaara compared the work to a prism: As the composer turns it, one and the same shaft of light gives birth over and again to new patterns and combinations of colours.

When his musical triad op. 192 was created in the winter of 1873/74, Raff was one of Germany's most successful composers and the central artistic authority in the Hessian spa, royal residence and imperial city of Wiesbaden. With op. 192, Raff cultivated his reputation as an erudite composer who was a master of contrapuntal forms. By the time the string quartets were composed, he had already established himself as one of the most prolific and versatile suite composers of the 19th century, as is evident here in the various suite conceptions: Opus 192 No. 1 (in C minor), as Suite in the ancient style, has with Baroque labels stylized dance movements follow one another. Die schone Mullerin [The Fair Maid of the Mill] op. 192 No. 2 (in D major), on the other hand, interprets the suite as a sequence of chapters in a musical narrative and thus becomes probably the first tone poem in string quartet scoring. In the third quartet (in C major), of which Raff the artist was proudest, other genre designations mix in among the dance movements, and with its free succession of different movement types, not usual for a sonata, it preserves structural openness. Some eighteen years elapsed between Raff's first counted String Quartet op. 77 and his Quartets Nos. 6-8 op. 192, combined as one work. As such, Raff parted with the weighty single opus in quartet composition - without, however, sacrificing musical quality.
