Piano - Grade 1-8 SKU: ST.C204 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Edited by Pat Goddard. Piano and keyboard music. Great Little Composers. Collection. Clifton Edition #C204. Published by Clifton Edition (ST.C204). ISBN 9790570812042. Pat Goddard was left to ponder what the great composers were doing in their early years. Following meticulous research, the result was a new series for piano: Great Little Composers.
The examples of Beethovenâ??s early piano works included in this album were written when Beethoven was between the ages of 11 and 27 â?? he did not have such an early start as Mozart! All but one have been relegated to the end of the catalogue of his works under the heading â??Werke ohne Opuszahlâ? (works without an Opus number WoO). However, they are varied and interesting and although showing strong traits of Haydn and Mozart, the germ of Beethovenâ??s future strikingly individual expressive language is clear. $10.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 4 to 6 weeks

Piano (Piano solo) - L6 SKU: HL.51481203 Piano. Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Edited by Murray Perahia and Norbert Gertsch. Arranged by Murray Perahia. Sheet Music. Paperbound. Henle Music Folios. Revised edition of HN 183. Classical. Softcover. 26 pages. G. Henle #HN1203. Published by G. Henle (HL.51481203). ISBN 9790201812038. UPC: 888680749965. 9.25x12.25x0.121 inches. Fing. Murray Perahia. Beethoven's three piano sonatas op. 2 were the first works in this genre to which he gave an opus number, thus signalling to the musical world the special importance that he assigned to them. He wrote them during his first years in Vienna and, along with his op. 1 piano trios, they helped to establish his reputation as one of the most significant composers of his time. These three sonatas - all of them small masterpieces - are arranged in ascending order of difficulty and virtuosity. The four-movement Sonata in f minor is often called the “Little Appassionata†because it shares with the famous Sonata op. 57 not just its key, but also its impassioned mood - especially in the last movement. Murray Perahia's fingerings have been tried and tested over several decades of performing these works, and offer a new approach to these milestones of the piano repertoire. Replaces HN183. Duration 39 minutes. Baerenreiter Verlag #BA10303_01. Published by Baerenreiter Verlag (BA.BA10303-01). ISBN 9790006559503. 33 x 26 cm inches. Key: C minor. Preface: Michael Stegemann. The third symphony by Camille Saint-Saens, known as the Organ Symphony, is the first publication in a complete historical-critical edition of the French composer's instrumental works.
I gave everything I was able to give in this work. [...] What I have done here I will never be able to do again.Camille Saint-Saens was rightly proud of his third Symphony in C minor Op.78, dedicated to the memory of Franz Liszt. Called theOrgan Symphonybecause of its novel scoring, the work was a commission from the Philharmonic Society in London, as was Beethoven's Ninth, and was premiered there on 19 May 1886. The first performance in Paris followed on 9 January 1887 and confirmed the composer's reputation asprobably the most significant, and certainly the most independent French symphonistof his time, as Ludwig Finscher wrote in MGG. In fact the work remains the only one in the history of that genre in France to the present day, composed a good half century after the Symphonie fantastique by Hector Berlioz and a good half century before Olivier Messiaen's Turangalila Symphonie.
You would think that such a famous, much-performed and much recorded opus could not hold any more secrets, but far from it: in the first historical-critical edition of the Symphony, numerous inconsistencies and mistakes in the Durand edition in general use until now, have been uncovered and corrected. An examination and evaluation of the sources ranged from two early sketches, now preserved in Paris and Washington (in which the Symphony was still in B minor!) via the autograph manuscript and a set of proofs corrected by Saint-Saens himself, to the first and subsequent editions of the full score and parts. The versions for piano duet (by Leon Roques) and for two pianos (by the composer himself) were also consulted. Further crucial information was finally found in his extensive correspondence, encompassing thousands of previously unpublished letters. The discoveries made in producing this edition include the fact that at its London premiere, the Symphony probably looked quite different from its present appearance ...
No less exciting than the work itself is the history of its composition and reception, which are described in an extensive foreword. With his Symphony, Saint-Saens entered right into the dispute which divided French musical life into pro and contra Wagner in the 1880s and 1890s. At the same time, the work succeeded in preserving the balance between tradition and modernism in masterly fashion, as a contemporary critic stated:The C minor Symphony by Saint-Saens creates a bridge from the past into the future, from immortal richness to progress, from ideas to their implementation.
On 19 March 1886 Saint-Saens wrote to the London Philharmonic Society, which commissioned the work:
Work on the symphony is in full swing. But I warn you, it will be terrible. Here is the precise instrumentation: 3 flutes / 2 oboes / 1 cor anglais / 2 clarinets / 1 bass clarinet / 2 bassoons / 1 contrabassoon / 2 natural horns / [3 trumpets / Saint-Saens had forgotten these in his listing.] 2 chromatic horns / 3 trombones / 1 tuba / 3 timpani / organ / 1 piano duet and the strings, of course. Fortunately, there are no harps. Unfortunately it will be difficult. I am doing what I can to mitigate the difficulties.
As in my 4th Concerto [for piano] and my [1st] Violin Sonata [in D minor Op.75] at first glance there appear to be just two parts: the first Allegro and the Adagio, the Scherzo and the Finale, each attacca. This fiendish symphony has crept up by a semitone; it did not want to stay in B minor, and is now in C minor.
It would be a pleasure for me to conduct this symphony. Whether it would be a pleasure for others to hear it? That is the question. It is you who wanted it, I wash my hands of it. I will bring the orchestral parts carefully corrected with me, and if anyone wants to give me a nice rehearsal for the symphony after the full rehearsal, everything will be fine.
When Saint-Saens hit upon the idea of adding an organ and a piano to the usual orchestral scoring is not known. The idea of adding an organ part to a secular orchestral work intended for the concert hall was thoroughly novel - and not without controversy. On the other hand, Franz Liszt, whose music Saint-Saens' Symphony is so close to, had already demonstrated that the organ could easily be an orchestral instrument in his symphonic poem Hunnenschlacht (1856/57). There was also a model for the piano duet part which Saint-Saens knew and may possibly have used quite consciously as an exemplar: theFantaisie sur la Tempetefrom the lyrical monodrama Lelio, ou le retour a la Vie op. 14bis (1831) by Berlioz. The name of the organist at the premiere ist unknown, as, incidentally, was also the case with many of the later performances; the organ part is indeed not soloistic, but should be understood as part of the orchestral texture.
In fact the subsequent success of the symphony seems to have represented a kind of breakthrough for the composer, who was then over 50 years of age.My dear composer of a famous symphony, wrote Saint-Saens' friend and pupil Gabriel Faure:You will never be able to imagine what a pleasure I had last Sunday [at the second performance on 16 January 1887]! And I had the score and did not miss a single note of this Symphony, which will endure much longer than we two, even if we were to join together our two lifespans!

String quartet string quartet (2vl,va,vc) SKU: BR.EB-8939 Urtext. ...(+)
String quartet string quartet (2vl,va,vc) SKU: BR.EB-8939 Urtext. Composed by Joachim Raff. Edited by Severin Kolb and Stefan Konig. This edition: Urtext. Chamber music; Folder. Edition Breitkopf. Orchestrally-conceived, full of energetic vigor, and at times uncompromisingly modern: The two captivating quartets are now available as Urtext editions. Romantic period. Set of parts. 88 pages. Breitkopf and Haertel #EB 8939. Published by Breitkopf and Haertel (BR.EB-8939). ISBN 9790004186084. With his first String Quartet in D minor, op. 77, composed in 1855, the native Swiss composer Joachim Raff bid a brilliant farewell to Weimar. He had been there as Franz Liszt's assistant since 1850 and had made a name for himself in the city's art scene - now he embarked on new paths. He composed his second Quartet in A major, op. 90, already in 1857 in Wiesbaden, the spa town that was to become his home for 21 years. The two quartets are unequivocal works: orchestrally-conceived, full of energetic vigor, and at times uncompromisingly modern. They confidently continue the Beethoven tradition and attest at the same time to Raff's intensive confrontation with Richard Wagner's music during the Weimar years. In his chamber music, the composer wanted to achieve progress in an inherently historical way and to ground the individual substance in existing forms, as he told the Viennese violinist Josef Hellmesberger, who launched opus 77. The quartets, first published in 1860/62, found illustrious interpreters, among them, the Muller brothers' renowned ensemble, to which opus 90 was also dedicated, and Joseph Joachim. In collaboration with the Joachim-Raff-Archiv Lachen (CH)
Some eighteen years elapsed between Raff's first counted String Quartet op. 77 and his Quartets Nos. 6-8 op. 192, combined as one work. As such, Raff parted with the weighty single opus in quartet composition - without, however, sacrificing musical quality. $61.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 24 hours - In Stock

(Orchestra) SKU: BA.BA11903 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Edited by Jonathan Del Mar. This edition: urtext edition. Stapled. Score. Opus 84. Baerenreiter Verlag #BA11903_00. Published by Baerenreiter Verlag (BA.BA11903). ISBN 9790006573783. 32.5 x 25.5 cm inches. Beethoven’s incidental music op. 84 was written in 1809 for a performance of Goethe’s drama “Egmont†at the Burgtheater in Vienna. Numerous composers of the day tried their hand at writing music for the dramatic material of Goethe’s tragedy, several in collaboration with the author himself. The overture reflects the themes of the play through its expressive music, and over the last two hundred years it has become one of the most popular works by Beethoven conceived for the stage.
For this new edition, Beethoven specialist Jonathan Del Mar draws on various manuscript sources including a handwritten set of parts which has never been taken into account before. Thus, numerous discrepancies such as missing notes in the flute part or unclear bowing could be clarified for the first time.

(Orchestra) SKU: BA.BA11902 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Edited by Jonathan Del Mar. This edition: urtext edition. Stapled. Score. Opus 43. Baerenreiter Verlag #BA11902_00. Published by Baerenreiter Verlag (BA.BA11902). ISBN 9790006573417. 32.5 x 25.5 cm inches. Beethoven composed the ballet music “Die Geschöpfe des Prometheus†during 1800–01, commissioned by the ballet master Salvatore Viganò for performances with his Viennese company. Although the ballet was initially quite successful, with almost thirty continuous performances, it did not enjoy a sustained performance tradition. Its overture, however, was a different matter: considered almost a symphonic movement in terms of orchestration, style and structure, it was often performed on its own even during Beethoven’s lifetime.
In general, previous editions of this overture relied on the first print as the main source. However, the authenticity of this source cannot be convincingly proven. For this new edition, Beethoven specialist Jonathan Del Mar incorporates various manuscript sources, including a set of parts from 1803/4 that has never been considered before. In this way, numerous discrepancies could be clarified.
