The cantata O God, what glut of care and pain BWV 58, which Bach subtitled Dialogus and wrote for the Sunday after New Year, limits itself accordingly to the dialog couple consisting of soprano and bass; further soloists or a choir are not required. In the framing movements, the dialog takes on the form of a chorale arrangement: the soprano presents a cantus firmus whose words are consolingly commented on by the bass. Both the expansive chorale arrangements leave room for an aria which is framed by two recitatives. The cantata was composed for the Sunday after New Year 1727, but the received form is from a subsequent performance that took place six or seven years later. For this performance, Bach not only expanded the instrumentation but also replaced an entire aria. Later, he assigned the cantata to his annual cycle of chorale cantatas, probably due to its high proportion of chorales; this Sunday was missing in that annual cycle as there was no Sunday between New Year and Epiphany in 1725. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3105800.

Nick Strimple has composed a set of three easy anthems, and lacking in difficulty is absolutely true. But elegant and distinguished also describes these settings of familiar texts. The words by 19th century English poet John Bowring is the least known text, but it is timeless and speaks of God's enduring love. The organ accompaniment contains scrumptious suspensions and resolutions for an anthem that works equally well as a choral piece, a solo, or for unison choir.

“I asked my friend, the poet Einar Askestad, if he could write a poem for me about love between father and son, brothers and God.I felt that these forms of love are seldom sung about. The poem moved me greatly and I have tried to put music to these words which is simple yet full of beauty. In the four movements of this suite-like piece, various aspects of these relationships are conveyed.†(Marten Jansson)“My music is my own and I have never tried to be original. That has always been my motto and I have only tried to use music to express all the feelings which life has to offer. This has led people to describe my music as ‘so sad that it sounds like birds who have lost their wings‘ but also as ‘the happiest classical music that we have ever heard’.My compositions are almost all sacred. They express not only my own faith but also my appreciation and respect for the timeless texts that have been used for centuries and centuries.â€MÃ¥rten Jansson (b. 1965), elected member of the Föreningen svenska tonsättare (the Society of Swedish Composers), graduated from the Royal College of Music, Stockholm (KHM) with an MFA degree in Music Education, Dalcroze Eurhythmics and Voice. For more than ten years he was the music director and conductor of “Carmenâ€, one of the most prominent womens’ vocal ensembles in Sweden. He currently teaches choral conducting and music theory as well as giving vocal tuition at the Bolandgymnasiet and Musikskolan in his home town of Uppsala.

Composer Modest Moussorgsky (1839-1881) came from the prosperous environment of Russian nobility. In 1865, after his officer’s education, he joined the guard’s regiment in St. Petersburg. Here he met a number of well-known colleague-composers, including Balakirev, Cui, Rimsky- Korsakov and Borodin. They strived to develop a “classical style†of composing while at the same time retaining a strong Russian influence. His opera Boris Godunov tells the tale of Boris, who with the support of the people, declared himself Tsar, but totally fell short of the role. The opera became popular in the re-orchestrated version produced by Rimsky-Korsakov in 1896. Tohru Takahashi has usedthe beautiful musical themes of this opera in Selections from Boris Godunov - a captivating work for concert band. Moussorgsky’s opera Boris Godunov - gebaseerd op het gelijknamige drama van Aleksandr Pushkin (waarin Boris Godunov zichzelf met steun van het volk uitroept tot tsaar, maar in deze rol compleet tekortschiet) - werd populairin de bewerking die Rimsky-Korsakov in 1896 maakte. Her octavos have been featured in our Choral Subscription Series and in numerous reading sessions. Now, Carol Browning's original compositions are available on CD and cassette! Great for contemporary ensemble, Carol's catchy refrains spark natural assembly participation. The spirited Give Thanks to the Lord, based on Psalm107, is energetic and fun, while O Lord, the Guardian of My Heart offers a prayer of quiet strength. With Grateful Hearts is ideal for Thanksgiving celebrations. But perhaps the best and brightest of this great collection is Ubi Caritas, a stunningly beautiful version of the classic chant text with music and verse texts by Browning. This recording is simply a great new way to become familiar with the works of this rising new composer. Contains one each of the following octavos: Give Thanks to the Lord - Sing a New Song - O Lord, the Guardian of My Life - I Come to You, O God - Benediction - With Grateful Hearts - Fill Us with Your Love, O Lord - God of Our Comings and Goings - Jesus, Lamb of God - If Jesus Wept - Ubi Caritas - Alleluia, Christ Is Risen.

Ephesians 1:7 says, “In Him, we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that lavished on us.” This melodic offering of praise and worship brings to light the truth and foundation of the gospel; we are saved, not by anything we have done, but by the blood of Jesus shed for us on the cross. Perfect for Easter or any time of the year, your church will love singing Tim Paul’s arrangement of Nothing but the Blood.

Classic hymn Joel Raney pairs the text of this profound hymn with his own original melody and additional words to capture the power and glory of God's grace. The essential elements of this stately anthem call for SATB choir and piano accompaniment, but the addition of organ, handbells, 3 trumpets and percussion makes this an ideal selection for any festive service of praise. The appearance of the hymn tune, CWM RHONDDA, pulls everything together along with the deeply felt refrain: Grant us hearts and hands for service, Lord. On your people pour your holy power! The Instrumental Parts contain a Conductor's Score and parts for Organ, 3-5 octave Handbells, 3 Trumpets in B-flat, and Percussion (Timpani, Suspended Cymbal & Windchimes).
