As the title suggests, this work is a partita: it consists of a number of variations on a chorale melody. The partita has been popular for centuries, especially when it comes to organ music. Henk van Belcum, who is active in the choir world, chose for his Partita Piccola the German hymn Wunderbarer König as a starting point. Partita Piccola consists of four variations and a choral setting. After a majestic opening fanfare, the second variation follows, based on a canon by Pachelbel. Händel’s Sarabande is the basis of the third variation. Next comes the chorale setting, after which the work ends festively with a dance that has been written in the form of a courante. PartitaPiccola is an asset for church services and for concert platforms. Die Partita, seit Jahrhunderten ein fester und beliebter Bestandteil der Orgelliteratur, besteht aus einer Anzahl Variationen zu einer Choralmelodie. Für seine Partita Piccola nahm sich Henk van Belcum die deutsche Hymne Wunderbarer König als Vorlage. Die Partita Piccola besteht aus vier Variationen und einer Choralbearbeitung, die auch einzeln für den Gottesdienst verwendet werden kann.Auf eine würdevolle Eröffnungsfanfare folgen neben der Choralbearbeitung Variationen zu einem Kanon Pachelbels und zu Händels Sarabande. Abgerundet wird das Werk schließlich durch eine festliche Courante. Die Partita Piccola ist eine Bereicherung für den Gottesdienst und dieKonzertbühne.

The final part, Musica Alpina, is inspired by the amazing variety of scenery in Switzerland.In het Zwitserse Wallberg wordt ieder jaar een concours voor harmonieorkesten en brassbands georganiseerd. Naast een hymne en een solowerk dienen alle orkesten een verplicht werk uit te voeren. Voor het concours van 2012 werd eenopdracht verstrekt aan Jan de Haan. De compositie kreeg Musica Helvetica als titel mee. Het gaat om een driedelig concertwerk waarvan de laatste twee delen onafgebroken in elkaar overgaan. Het eerste deel, Musica Prima,is een virtuoze en flitsende opening met hier en daar jazzy invloeden. In contrast daarmee staat het expressieve volgende deel, Musica Sacra, waarin het gedragen hoofdthema prachtig wordt uitgewerkt - de instrumentatieis hier buitengewoon kleurrijk. Het afsluitende deel, Musica Alpina, is ge nspireerd op het afwisselende landschap van Zwitserland. Einen Kontrast hierzu bildet der folgende Teil, Musica Sacra, worin das Hauptthema wunderschönausgearbeitet wird - die Instrumentierung ist hier außergewöhnlichfarbig. Der letzte Teil, Musica Alpina, ist inspiriert vom abwechslungsreichen Landschaftsbild der Schweiz. Ceremonial Entry is a non-programmatic introductory work in which the timpani’s set a slow movement supported by a long pedal in the basses. Interrupted by signal like motifs the dynamics gradually increase resulting in a heroic trumpet-call. The motion becomes rounder and is followed by a section which brings to mind the rhythmical cadence of galley slaves rowing. As the opening slow movement returns a climax follows similar to the “Pini di Roma” from the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi. Ceremonial Entry was composed to celebrate the 25th Frysk Fanfare Festival.Ceremonial Entry is een non-programmatisch openingswerk waarin de pauken een langzame, stuwende beweging in gang zetten ondersteund door een lang orgelpunt in de bassen. Onderbroken door signaal-achtige motieven wordt de dynamieklangzaam opgevoerd en mondt uit in een hero?sch trompetsignaal. De beweging wordt ronder en er volgt een gedeelte dat het beeld zou kunnen oproepen van galeislaven die in een ritmische cadans aan de riemen trekken. Als de langzamebeweging van het begin weer in gang wordt gezet volgt er een climax die doet denken aan Pini di Roma van de Italiaanse componist Ottorino Respighi. Ceremonial Entry is geschreven ter gelegenheid van het 25ste Frysk Fanfare Festival.

This piece was commissioned by Oyama City Symphonic Wind Orchestra to commemorate their 30th Anniversary. The composer was inspired by Oyama City’s slogan, ‘water, green and earth’, to write this festive fanfare. Following a gentle opening a fanfare leads to a magnifi cent chorale. This turns into a quickly moving energetic section with irregular rhythm. This is a short but dramatic piece that will make a brilliant concert opener. Beim Komponieren dieses Werkes ließ sich Satoshi Yagisawa von den Schlagwörtern Wasser“, grün“ und Erde“ aus dem Motto der auftraggebenden Stadt Oyama inspirieren. Mit einer sanften Einleitung, nach der die Fanfare zu einem prachtvollen Choral anschwillt, um dann ein kraftvolles, schnelles Thema hervorzubringen, bietet Fanfare - The Benefaction from Sky and Mother Earth alles, was es zu einer wirkungsvollen Konzerteröffnung braucht. l’introduction, expressive et douce, succède une fanfare qui chemine vers l’exposition d’un magnifi que thème choral. La ligne mélodique qui suit est puissante et vive. Une oeuvre effi cace pour ouvrir un concert en finesse et en puissance. Questo brano è stato commissionato dalla Oyama City Symphonic Wind Orchestra in Giappone, per celebrare il 30° anniversario di fondazione. Nello scrivere il brano, il compositore si è ispirato allo slogan di Oyama: acqua, verde e terra. L’introduzione è discreta ed è seguita da una fanfara che accompagna il brano ad un splendido corale. Il brano diventa poi più energico e veloce. Un brano breve, ma di grande impatto, tipico dello stile di Yagisawa.

Hora Est! (Latin for ‘it is time!’) was composed to bid adieu to Sjoerd de Boer’s following forty years as conductor of the Chr. Fanfare Band, based in the town of Wjelsryp in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, this small phrase, hora est, is traditionally said upon awarding a university doctorate at graduation ceremonies. The composition was written with Sjoerd de Boer firmly in mind, mirroring various aspects of his life. The main motif of the work consists of three notes, forming his initials: S (Eb) D B. At a certain point, the music is interrupted by a thunderstorm and heavy rain (forever a bad omen: the debut for this work took place a day after such a deluge, but fortunately their open-air concert was met with clear blue skies.) The fanfare then plays an Italianesque march, with the motif of de Boer’s initials interwoven throughout. The work re-uses this motif twice towards the end of the piece as one might expect, by the saxophones to create a festive, driven and virtuosic atmosphere. Finally, the work comes to an end with the initials motif played across the ensemble in complete unison. The powerful closing chords symbolise a fond farewell to de Boer: a driven and extremely capable conductor whose musical mark on Concordia will be felt for years to come. Hora Est! is suitable as a contest piece and would be a definite highlight for any upcoming concert.Hora Est! is gecomponeerd ter gelegenheid van het afscheid van Sjoerd de Boer als dirigent van Chr. Fanfarekorps Concordia uit Wjelsryp (Friesland), na maar liefst veertig jaar. Hora Est! is Latijn voor ‘Het is tijd!’. Het zinnetje wordt traditioneel uitgesproken bij een promotie tot doctor op de universiteit, op het moment dat de vastgestelde tijd voor verdediging van het proefschrift om is. De pedel komt dan binnen en stampt met zijn staf op de grond terwijl hij deze woorden roept. In dat opzicht verwijst de titel naar de voormalige universiteitsstad Franeker, de woonplaats van Sjoerd en de stad waar hij jaren lang leraar muziek was aan de christelijke scholengemeenschap. Anderzijds verwijst de titel naar zijn afscheid van Concordia: ‘Het is tijd!’.

The word ‘tsunami’ is of Japanese origin. When you look it up in a dictionary, you will find that it means ‘a great sea wave produced by submarine earth movement or volcanic eruption’. A megatsunami is the superlative of this awesome expressionof power that nature can create, and has catastrophic consequences. When Carl Wittrock completed this composition not many such big earth movements had occurred, but since then we have become all too familiar with the disastrousconsequences which a tsunami may have. On the 26th of December 2004 a heavy seaquake took place near the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Tidal waves 10 meters in height ravaged the coastal regions of many countries for miles around. The tsunamitook the lives of thousands of people and destroyed many villages and towns. There are more areas which run the risk of being struck by a tsunami, such as the island of La Palma, one of the Canary Islands. This island is based on oceaniccrust at a fracture zone and as such is one of nature’s time bombs. The consequences of a natural calamity like a megatsunami are immense. In the case of La Palma, the tidal wave will move in the direction of South America, where it may reach 50km inland, destroying everything on its way. In his composition Wittrock describes an ordinary day which will have an unexpected ending. Right from the beginning there seems to be something in the air, the music creating an oppressiveatmosphere of impending disaster. Themes are interrupted, broken off suddenly, followed by silence, suggesting the calm before the storm. Suddenly a short climax (glissandi in the trombone part) indicates the seaquake, and the megatsunami isa fact. Hereafter follows a turbulent passage symbolising the huge rolling waves. After nature’s force has spent itself, resignation sets in and the composition ends with a majestic ode to nature.Het woord tsunami is afkomstig uit het Japans. Het woordenboek geeft als betekenis: een vloedgolf als gevolg van een onderzeese aardbeving. Een megatsunami is de overtreffende trap van deze vorm van natuurgeweld en heeft catastrofale gevolgen. Toen Carl Wittrock deze compositie voltooide waren er nog niet veel voorbeelden van dergelijke grote bevingen, maar inmiddels weten we maar al te goed welke desastreuze gevolgen een tsunami kan veroorzaken. Tot ongeveer 50 kilometer landinwaarts heeft de megatsunami eenallesverwoestende werking. In de compositie schetst Wittrock een gewone dag die ongewoon zal aflopen. Al vanaf het begin hangt er iets in de lucht en is er sprake van een dreigende, beklemmende sfeer. Themas worden onderbroken doorplotselinge afbrekingen en stiltes. Opeens is daar de korte climax (glissandi in trombones) die de beving symboliseert en de megatsunami is een feit. Een onrustig gedeelte vangt aan, daarmee de rollende, voortstuwende golven symboliserend. De Ruigewaard is a large polder (reclaimed land protected by dykes) in the Dutch province of Groningen. Shortly after the land was reclaimed around 1500, a settlement was established at the location of the current village of Grijpskerk. This was the source of inspiration for this concert work, together with a 13th-century Gregorian theme - the Dies Irae - which is used as a leitmotiv.After the introduction follow five variations, in randon order - however, each one of them carries us back to a striking moment in the history of Grijpskerk, home of the Excelsior Christian Music Association (CMV), who commissioned this work on the occasion of its participation in theWMC in Kerkrade (the Netherlands) in 2013. De Ruigewaard is een grote polder in de provincie Groningen. Kort na de inpoldering rond 1500 ontstond er een nederzetting op de plaats waar nu het dorp Grijpskerk is gelegen. Dit gegeven vormde de inspiratiebron voor dit concertwerk - samen met een als leidmotief gebruikt 13e-eeuws gregoriaans thema: het Dies Irae.Na de introductie volgen vijf variaties, in willekeurige volgorde, maar wel allemaal terug te voeren op een markant moment uit de geschiedenis van de vestigingsplaats van de opdrachtgever van deze compositie: Grijpskerk. CMV Excelsior Grijpskerk heeft deze compositie laten schrijven vanwege haar deelname aan het WMC te Kerkrade in 2013.
