Ton Koopman's new edition of all 16 organ concertos by Handel has drawn to a close. The quality of this edition has been highly praised from all quarters. Source-critical responsibility goes hand in hand with a high level of performance practice when Koopman provides interpretative tips for the ad libitum passages in the organ part without restricting the creativity of the interpreter who is interested in stylistic matters and prefers to work out his own solutions. The popular Concerto Op. 4 No. 6 in B flat major was originally a harp concerto (and is thus called Concerto per la Harpa in the autograph) and was performed in this version at its premiere in 1736, when it was inserted into Handel's oratorio Alexander's Feast in order to illustrate the harp playing of the Greek singer Timotheus. A harp edition is also in preparation.I want to make an edition that is not a Koopman interpretation, but contains only that which Handel really wrote. Nevertheless, there are occasional performance suggestions in small print which are elucidated in the Critical Commentary. (Ton Koopman in Concerto) Koopman offers a basically unmarked text, thus leaving the performance details up to the performer. Especially note-worthy is the clear printing, extensive preface and detailed Critical Notes. (Katholische Kirchenmusik)Whoever wishes to hear the entire Koopman edition on CD can look forward to the new recording by Christian Schmitt and the Stuttgarter Kammerorchester (Brilliant Classics). This is the first recording for which all 16 new Koopman editions were used as the basis for the performance.

The energetic activities of three craftsmen at a local crafts market inspired the composer Christian Bouthier to write this work in three movements. The clockmaker gets many curious visitors at his stand. He patiently and proudly shows the precision work of his beautiful clocks and lets all of them tick - the small ones and large ones. The cooper (barrel-maker) skillfully puts together fine-looking, sturdy barrels of the best types of wood. From afar, you can hear the cooper hammering. In the final movement things are hectic at the blacksmith because the local horse-riding society has just arrived. Many horses are provided with new shoes. The experienced blacksmith hits thehorseshoes into the proper shape on his anvil; now the horses can spiritedly trot and gallop on the way back. A fascinating new addition to the concert band repertoire. Viva Noel is a medley of glorious holiday favorites in a fast/slow/fast form. Opening with a musical fanfare based on the French hymn He is Born the Holy Child the arrangement transitions quickly into a fanciful rendition of Deck the Halls. The following section opens with a beautiful brass choir adaptation of It Came Upon A Midnight Clear and develops into a lush, full band setting of this charming carol. The finale begins as a quick, light version of Here We Come a-Wassailing ending with a declarative brass fanfare with small bits of Bring a Torch, Jeannette Isabella and Angels We Have Hear on High. This high-energy holiday arrangement features all sections of the ensemble with exceptional emphasis on the percussion writing. Viva Noel! will be a solid opener or closer for any holiday concert!

The cantata Nun danket alle Gott (Now thank we all our God) BWV 192 is based on the text of the well-known hymn. It is therefore one of a small number of chorale cantatas which contain no free poetic texts. Correspondingly, there are no recitatives either. It has only recently been assumed that this three-movement work was not intended for Leipzig, but was actually written in 1730 for Bach's prestigious position as Kapellmeister of Saxe-Weissenfels. The court of Duke Christian enjoyed the its sojourn in the newly-renovated castle of its secondary residence in Sangerhausen and, at Trinity, in the court church, celebrated the anniversary of its consecration with festive music. Bach evidently occasionally contributed to this. The work does not survive complete. Even in the 18th century a full score evidently no longer existed, just a set of parts, the tenor part of which is entirely missing. For the new edition the missing part has been reconstructed by Detlev Schulten (Leipzig). Score and part available separately - see item CA.3119200.

Written in tribute to all mothers, but especially the composer's mother Florilyn, who died at the age of 90 in 2008, each of the four movements in this grade 3 suite may be performed independently of the others with excellent results. Movement 1 is a plaintive waltz with lush romantic harmonies. Movement 2 is a comedic interpolation featuring portions of two etudes by Muzio Clementi and the tick-tick sound of the typewriter. Conflict, reconciliation, resolution, and acceptance is the conveyed essence of movement 3. And with a reverent duet introduction, the final movement of Elégie à nos mères commemorates the end of Florilyn's long life. Arranged for saxophone quartet (SATBar).
