The Polar Vortex is the mass of extremely cold air situated over each of the earth's poles. Occasionally the vortex slips away from the polar region bringing unusually cold air to areas away from the pole. Polar Vortex is a depiction of a winter storm inspired by the poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson, The Snow-Storm. It is a rhapsodic piece with many contrasting moments, styles, tempos, and colors of sound. Maelstrom is a term synonymous with a whirlpool: a swirling, tumultuous vortex that engulfs everything around it. This exciting piece starts with a treacherous storm motif that acts as the undercurrent as quotes from famous water-themed compositions are heard. Some shifting is required in first violin, cello, and bass, and all parts include accidentals and dramatic dynamic changes. Students will learn the flowing theme from Smetana's Die Moldau, explore the haunting Aquarium movement from Saint-Saens's Carnival of the Animals, and bow along to a traditional Irish Sea Chanty, as melodies overlap in this musical storm. Developing players will refine articulation skills, explore a variety of rhythms in 6/8, and expand their chromatic and dynamic horizons in the familiar key of E minor.

Kathryn Griesinger builds the forceful minor theme of Centrifuge on a repeating motif of rotating eighth notes. Based on the scientific principle of centripetal force, this piece offers a vortex of expanding and falling energy, with easy finger patterns in first position. Centrifuge is a whirlwind of excitement, and it is well within the reach of developing players. An optional piano part is also included.
Like the rotational force of the mechanical centrifuge, a repeating eighth-note motif gives this piece the feel of a spinning cyclone, constantly building energy and momentum. Driving rhythms in the cello and bass should be strong and steady. Viola and Violin 2 parts are written closely, often doubled for a strong echoing voice. Eighth-note patterns sound best if played at the middle or balance point of the bow, to enable easy transitions between springy, short staccatos and long, full half notes on the string. Students have ample opportunities to practice low-two finger patterns and create dramatic dynamic contrasts. The pizzicato section should remain steady, maintaining a sense of urgency and excitement. The dark minor tonality and sense of motion make this a powerful piece students will love to play!

Programme note

Morpheus in the Greek mythology is the most powerful of the Oneroi, the gods of dreams. He is the one who sends us our dreams and he may appear to us within the dreams in disguise.

Analogous to the logic of dreams, in Morpheus everything is interwoven, as chains of associations appear to logically lead us from one line of thought to another. Everything seems strangelyfamiliar. But the logic is treacherous and we already feel, it may only be valid within the dream. Nothing that appears similar is actually ever really the same.

Half awakening, we struggle to hold on to a vanishing world we felt we were on the verge of understanding, but which we already know will eventually escape us when we fully awake.

Everything remains a mystery until the end.
