This work follows my Quartet No. 1 by five years. In terms of style and aesthetic aim, however, it seems light years away. Where the first work, a 28-minute, four-movement piece, took aim at cosmic conflicts and heroic resolutions, the present work is intended as a kind of divertissment. Harbor Music lasts a mere eleven minutes, is cast in a single movement with six sections, and should leave both performers and listeners with a feeling of good humor and affection. The title comes from my experience as a guest in the magnificent city of Sydney, Australia. One of its most attractive features is its unique system of ferry boats: the city is laid out around a large, multi-channeled harbor, with destinations more easily approached by water than by land. Consequently, inhabitants of Sydney get around on small, people-friendly boats that come and go from the central docks at Circular Quay. During a week's visit in 1991, I must have boarded these boats at least a dozen times, always bound for a new location - the resort town of Manley, or the Zoo at Taronga Park, or the shopping district at Darling Harbour. In casting about for a form for my second string quartet, a kind of loose rondo came to mind. Each new destination would be approached from the same starting-out point (although there are subtle variations in the repeating theme; it's always in a new key, and the texture is never the same). The result, I hope, is a sense of constant new information presented with introductory frames of a more familiar nature. The embarkation theme, which begins the piece, is a sort of bi-tonal fanfare in which the violins are in G major and the viola and cello are in B-flat major. It is bold, eager, and forward-looking. The first voyage maintains this bi-tonality, beginning as a 9/8 due for second violin and viola in a kind of rocking motion -much as a boat produces when reaching the deeper water in the harbor. A sweet, nostalgic theme emerges over this rocking accompaniment. This music is developed somewhat, then transforms quickly into a much faster and lighter episode, filled with rising and falling scales (again, in differing keys). A scherzando interlude in short notes and changing meters provides contrast, and the episode ends with a reprise of the scales. The second embarkation follows, this time in A major/C major. It leads quickly into a very warm and slow theme, in wide-leaping intervals for the viola. This section is interrupted twice by solo cadenzas for the cello, suggesting distant boat-horns in major thirds. The end of the episode becomes a transition, with boat-horns leading into the final appearance of the embarkation music, this time in trills and tremolos instead of sharply accented chords. The nostalgic theme of the first episode makes a final appearance, serving now as a coda. The rocking motion continues, in a lullaby fashion, leaving us drowsy and satisfied on our homeward journey. Harbor Music was written for the Cavani Quartet, and is dedicated to Richard J. Bogomolny. Commissioned by his employees at First National Supermarkets as a gift, it represents a thank you from many of the people (including this composer) who have benefitted from his vision and generosity. An ardent advocate of chamber music (and a cellist himself), Mr. Bogomolny has for many years been Chairman of the Board of Chamber Music America. -- Dan Welcher.

In six inter-related movements, exhibiting throughout great concision and economy, devotees of the composer's style will find much to admire in the second of Farquhar's four string quartets. The composer writes: The quartet is in six movements which are played without a break. The odd-numbered movements are quick, and are all based on the same material?an unsettled chord with B as the melody note, followed by a downward arpeggio flourish and a rising stepwise melody. The tempo in movements 3 and 5 gets progressively faster, and the atmosphere increasingly scherzando in character. The first two even-numbered movements (2 and 4) are slow expressive intermezzi; both feature an up-beat of three repeated Bs leading into chromatic lines. The final movement serves as an epilogue and resolution; the instruments are now muted and the three repeated Bs are now on the beat, while off-beat accompaniment figures provide a gentle swaying dance around them..

“Sarabande et Finale is a nice piece by Raymond Gallois Montbrun for Bb or C Trumpet and Piano accompaniment. Quite difficult, this piece is great for recitals or concert. Starting with the Piano for just six measures before the Trumpet Solo, the sarabande has a slow tempo. The finale is faster, Allegro, and features a period with solo Piano before evolving into Vivo. It features the score and parts for Bb or C Trumpet. Raymond Gallois Montbrun (1918-1994) was a French violinist and composer who won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome and the Grand Prix de Paris. He later became the director of the Paris Conservatoire. He composed many symphonic pieces, an opera, a quartet and many pieces for Solo Piano, Violin and Piano and other instruments.â€.

Hameenniemi's quartet (1989) is in four independent movements. Although harmonic and melodic elements bind the movements together, each one is infused with its own internal energy, and the composer has interposed slow contrasting material into the faster and livelier parts. The multiple layers of psychological meaning in this work make it a demanding and worthwhile challenge.

Composed in 1936 by Jacques Ibert (1890-1962), a neoclassical composer who won the Prix de Rome in 1919, Pièce for Solo Flute was premiered by Marcel Moyse. This publication was written in three movements in two contrasting themes. The first theme is a slow lyrical melody compared to the second one which is much faster. The third movement of Pièce for Solo Flute brings back the first theme again but with more ornamentation this time.Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) also composed many symphonic suites, operas and seven orchestras, including 'Angelique' (1926) and 'Divertissement' (1930). He also was in charge of the Académie de France in the Villa Médicis (Roma) and was later administrator for the Paris Opera.

As the title implies, this piece is written in a contemplative manner for beginning students. It is a good piece to demonstrate basic compositional techniques that the students will be able identify easily in the piece. It begins with a lush opening section with an elegant melody to work on musicianship. This is contrasted by the up tempo section of the piece based on the same basic musical material, but in a varied style and frolicking feel. A very satisfying piece for beginning wind players.Contemplation: the action to look thoughtfully at something for a long time. When composing music that will be used with younger students, I want to stimulate thoughtfulness in them. In this particular piece I want the students to be able to stretch their musicianship beyond their experience on their instruments to play in a contemplative manner. To me, this is the essence of musical playing in an emotional and thoughtful way. It is something that cannot be stressed enough, even in students that have just begun to play. As soon as possible, they should be asked to put themselves into the music and make it more than the notes and rhythms on the page. This piece is my attempt to provide very young students, who are just beginning their musical journey, with something they can reach technically, but have to stretch for musically. The amount of notes and rhythms is limited, but students should strive for beauty of tone, good phrasing and emotional involvement. After a short introduction, the heartfelt main theme begins at a lyrical and slow tempo. This is developed with the addition of a secondary theme, featuring the lower voices, before the piece leads to an Allegro section that is based on the same musical material with a difference in tempo and a variation in rhythm patterns. The piece can serve to show students that the same basic music can have an entirely different emotional connection with differences in tempo, rhythm and style, with the first section of the piece being sentimental and the faster section being more joyous in nature. As with all of my pieces for younger students, it is completely acceptable to me for you to adjust the tempo to fit the educational needs of your students. It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece. I hope you and your students enjoy it and find it useful for your program.—Larry ClarkLakeland, FL 2018.

Domenico Scarlatti's Sonata in G minor, K.315 is a simple and elegant work from the Baroque period, featuring a characteristically short two-measure motif. Originally composed for keyboard, this arrangement for string orchestra skillfully works this theme into every section of the ensemble in a variety of ranges as it develops and expands. A wonderful introduction to Baroque style performance featuring staccatos and tenuto articulations and charming melodic counterpoint. The piece can be successfully performed at a slow or faster tempo, according to the ensemble’s ability.

According to legend, Tolenas Springs, in Solano County, CA was once known as The Land of the Healing Waters due to the restorative powers of the water. This beautiful descriptive work begins with a slow, lyrical melody reminiscent of the flowing water, followed with the music evolving into a faster, heroic theme stated by the brass. Harlequin was commissioned by, and is dedicated to, euphonium virtuoso David Childs. The piece takes as its inspiration the happy and sad masks which symbolise the Commedia dell?Arte (which features Harlequin as one of its main characters) and comprises two movements, a slow modal ballad followed by a frenetic faster movement. A fantastic showpiece for euphonium and band.

In this book and online audio, master jazz guitarist Frank Vignola has taken eight different jazz standard chord progressions and recorded rhythm guitar parts so you can play along and learn these most commonly used chord progressions. He has also written out a jazz solo for each of the eight tunes. These are recorded at slow and faster tempos for practice. The first chorus of every track has both the solo and the rhythm guitar, and the rest of the choruses have just the rhythm guitar for you to jam along with. The notation for each tune includes a jazz solo written out in notation and tablature and also a chord chart. Includes access to online audio.

Folk dances are widespread throughout Greece. In this composition formed by three movements, Franco Cesarini elaborates some typicaldances of the Greek folk tradition by making use of three traditional folk songs, developing them freely. The first movement is a kalamatianos, a festive dance that has roots dating all the way back to antiquity and is considered the national dance of Greece. Its most distinctive feature is the irregular 7/8 rhythm. Depending on the occasion and the dancers’ level of skill, certain steps may be taken as jumps or squats. The second movement represents a zeibekiko. Contrary to most of the traditional Greek dances, the zeibekiko is not a dance performed in a group; it doesn't have any step to follow, only certain figures. The third movement, an hasapiko, is a traditional dance with roots from Constantinople. It serves as the inspiration for the “sirtaki†and progresses from a slow to a faster pace. The hasapiko is performed in a line or open circle formation, with each dancer placing his on the neighbour's shoulders.
