Ralph Sauer's landmark new work, Practice With Bach, will challenge your technique and musicality with demanding new etudes. Based on the keyboard works of J. S. Bach, each of the Three Volumes is available in five different versions--Alto Trombone, Tenor Trombone, Bass Trombone, Euphonium, and Tuba. Each version is customized for the individual instrument (choice of key, range, ornaments, etc.). Tenor trombonists will find that the Alto version is excellent for high register practice and alto clef reading. Likewise, Tenor trombonists can use the Bass version for low register work. Bass trombonists will find excellent material in the Tenor version for work in the upper register and tenor clef reading. The Euphonium version is in the same key as the Tenor version, but all in bass clef, with many more trills added. The Tuba version is in the same key as the Bass version, also with more trills. Volume One contains Twenty-four etudes in all keys, based upon preludes from The Well-Tempered Clavier.

Ralph Sauer has beautifully edited Volume I of the Milde Concert Studies. They will add much to the Bass Trombone (Tuba) study/etude literature. We look forward to many performers using these valuable studies to improve their technique and musicianship.

Originally written for the bassoon, these studies were favorites of the great trombone teacher, Emory Remington (1891-1971). While perhaps not concert material, they provide much more musical interest than the typical �©tude book.
I have added dynamics and changed phrasings to be more suitable for the bass trombone (or tuba) while keeping the wide tessitura of the original. The keys have been changed to put each �©tude in a more suitable range, while the trills from the original bassoon version are included primarily for tuba players.
These enjoyable and challenging studies will provide many hours of pleasurable practice. I have returned to these two volumes often over the years and hope that you will also find them useful and rewarding..

Exegesis is an unaccompanied solo for Bass Trombone written by American composer and Bass Trombonist Philip Brink in 1973. The work of about 4 minutes in length is appropriate for very advanced performers and requires the use of multi-phonics and other technical challenges.
Below is a brief instruction to the performer from the composer.
The rhythmic notation of Exegesis is fairly free; sections in traditional notation should approximate those rhythmic patterns, while arbitrarily long notes, rests or patterns should be as long as possible. The score hints at but does not make explicit any particular dramatic action or effect, which it is left to the performer to create or not. Most of the instructions are on the score and fairly easy to follow. The Beams that crescendo and diminuendo relate to acceleration or deceleration as indicated. There are odd little notes, like secretive in the first line - in these instances do whatever comes to mind as giving an impression of secrecy - change in volume, tone, or whatever - even a hand gesture!
The composer gives detailed instructions in the score for the listener and the performer, helping with the interpretation and appreciation of this work.

The Sonata for Solo Flute (Wq. 132) was composed in 1747, although it was not published until 1763. This transcription is in the original key of A minor, where it lies perfectly in the bass trombone range while also playable on the tenor trombone with F attachment. The first two movements can be reversed to create a traditional fast-slow-fast pattern, or played as originally published. The length of the three-movement work is about 10 minutes and is appropriate for advanced performers.

Phil Brink's new work for unaccompanied Bass Trombone is in three contrasting movements:
1. Harmonies - subtitled The Trombone Strikes Bach is pensive in mood and in the style of an Unaccompanied Prelude by Bach.

2. Balooze - subtitled A Sort of Soliloquoy is in a swung blues-style including a free cadenza-like introduction. It also includes a foot tapping accompaniment and multiphonics, reminiscent of Bernstein's Mippy II.

3. Rhythmus - Movement At High Speed, the finale is in a Presto tempo with lots of technical wizardry for the performer.
This very fine work of about 7-minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers.
