Bach's cantata My God alone this heart possesses BWV 169 is from his third annual cantata cycle in Leipzig; it was first performed on 20 October 1726 for the 18th Sunday after Trinity. As recent research has shown, the text was written by the Leipzig student, Christoph Birkmann. With the exception of the final chorale, this is a cantata for solo alto with, of course, a rich orchestral scoring consisting of three oboes, obbligato organ and strings. The first purely instrumental movement can be traced back to an instrumental concerto, which has been lost, after Bach had also composed the Keyboard Concerto in E major BWV 1053. The lyrical-vocal highpoint of the cantata is the fifth movement, which is also based on the concerto and it shows off Bach's arranging artistry to the highest degree. Among the movements are an aria-like recitative vocal movement, as well as another aria with an almost virtuoso organ accompaniment. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3116900.

During his most productive period as an opera composer, Camille Saint-Saens also wrote sacred works, among which his Oratorio de Noel has enjoyed great worldwide popularity. The colorful and opulently orchestrated Messe de Requiem was composed in 1878 in Bern. The composer dedicated it to his patron, Albert Libon. We have published this edition both with its larger orchestral forces and to enable perfomances of the Requiem in slightly reduced scoring (without losing the special characteristics of the work), in a version with a smaller orchestra consisting of 11 winds, two harps, organ and string instruments. The full score reproduces the Urtext of the Requiem with its original scoring, whereas the performance material is presented and conceived so to enable it to be performed either in the original orchestration or the version with reduced forces. Joseph Haydn's Stabat Mater, written in 1767, was the first church work the composer wrote after entering the service of Prince Esterhazy in Eisenstadt. Unlike almost all his other sacred works, it soon circulated in numerous copies and established Haydn's reputation as the leading vocal composer of his day. This edition is based on three original copies of parts, which are regarded as being particularly close to the (missing) autograph manuscript because of the date they were made and the reliable transmission of the music text. As so, this great, moving setting of the Stabat Mater is now newly available in a modern, scholarly edition. The complete performance material is available on sale. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5199100.

Carus-Verlag is now publishing this early work by Camille Saint-Saens in a critical new edition. Among the sacred works by Saint-Saens there are just two settings of the mass: the Messe de Requiem op. 54 from his middle period (1878), and the Mass op. 4 dating from 1856. This was first performed on 21 April 1857. Camille Saint-Saens was a devoted follower of historicism as part of the reform movement in French church music. This is more evident in the mass published here than anywhere else. The model for this work is the unison Messe Royale by Henry DuMont (1610-1683). Saint-Saens combined its Gregorian style in a convincing manner with contemporary elements of Romantic composition, an expressive chromaticism, which determines the harmonic progression. Alongside the orchestral forces, the Grand Orgue plays an important role. Used as a solo instrument, it is an equal partner in the composition. The history of the composition of the oratorio is odd: the kernel of this three-part work were the movements from the middle section, the Flight to Egypt, which Berlioz composed on a whim in 1850 and which he passed off as the work of a baroque composer whose existence he himself had invented. In 1854 the triptych, which was completed with the parts entitled The dream of Herodes and The arrival at Sais, had its celebrated first performance. Starting from the Gospel of St. Matthew, with the visit of the astrologer to Herodes and the flight of the Holy Family to Egypt, Berlioz chose to relate the story of the events of Christmas from another angle. This skillful dramatisation, with impressive instrumental sections, such as the independent trio for two flutes and harp as well as the effective choruses with local color, make this sacred trilogy a grateful enrichment of the repertoire for Christmas music. Gonzalo Grau's oratorio Aqua, commissioned by the International Bachakademie Stuttgart, is concerned with the important global theme of water. It is precisely in central Europe that this precious commodity is frequently and thoughtlessly wasted, while in other parts of the world it is so scarce. Moreover, water shows two sides, which Grau makes audible in his oratorio: It gives, but it can also take life - in some places rain brings luck, while in others it brings destruction. Worldwide water is a theme, it means different things in different cultures - this, for example, is reflected in the music of Indian and African cultures. Gonzalo Grau's compositional style is marked by a variety of influences: For me a Gregorian chant is just as beautiful as a Cuban Santeria song. Indian ornamentation and baroque articulation can both appear in the same piece, says the composer. Special sound effects make Aqua a multi-cultural oratorio in which man and the environment is the central theme. Score available separately - see item CA.2810300.
