In spite of his more than 200 works, Andreas Spath remains a minor figure in Romantic music. But this is of little concern to today’s clarinetists, who can now enjoy his idiomatic "Variations on a Theme by Mozart" op. 104. Just as Beethoven before him and many other composers of his own time and later, Spath chooses the duet "Bei Mannern, welche Liebe fuhlen," a popular theme from the then still very successful Magic Flute, and leads it knowledgeably through all of the clarinet’s registers. The new edition is based on the first print, published during Spath’s lifetime.

Louis Spohr's First Clarinet Concerto was written in winter 1808/09, at a time when the clarinet had just established itself as an orchestral and solo instrument. The concertos of Spohr and Weber which we know today and which date from these pioneer days around 1810 are due to the in-depth collaboration between composer and performer. Spohr wrote his technically very demanding clarinet concertos for the virtuoso Johann Simon Hermstedt. After the first successful performances, the composer decided to simplify the solo part for the printed edition. The Breitkopf Urtext edition is based on the autograph of the score and the first printing of the parts, which frequently differ from it. In the solo part, we have kept the easier variants along with the original version. From the early years of the clarinet concerto.

The composer states: “Acequia Madre demonstrates an approach which was somewhat new to the style of my musical expression at the time of its composition [2012]: structuring a work with the focus on its melodic aspects. I drew inspiration from other creative artists through one of my 'rituals': I surrounded myself with the scores of composers who, for one reason or another, were on my mind at the time, like Iannis Xenakis, Alban Berg's 'Four Pieces for Clarinet and Piano,' and 'Contrasts for violin, clarinet and piano' by Bela Bartok, plus Schubert's haunting final 'String Quartet No. 15.' Conquering technical difficulties is something I find particularly rewarding when playing acoustic instruments: fully aware that today's electronics can triumph over a composer's most demanding technical challenges, I love the idea of performers encountering their instruments with virtuosity ... doing something that seems to defy physical boundaries.&rdquo.

The 40 Studies compiled by Cyrille Rose are still today one of the most used by clarinetists. Adapting major violin studies of the 18th and 19th century, Rose made an excellent choice of technical and expressive materials. He freely changed the tone, articulations and note ranges to adapt as much as possible to mechanical and physiological specificities of the clarinet. Nevertheless, each study is a challenge that must be overcome by a slow and patient work which, if properly structured, develops and strengthens greatly the capacity of the clarinetist. In this new edition, the references of original studies are provided, supplemented by a brief biography of their authors. Finally, you will find, at the end of the book some ways of working. ; Instruments: Solo Clarinet; Difficuly Level: Grade 3.
