La Peri is a ballet in one act by Paul Dukas, written in 1912 and first performed in Paris. The Fanfare was originally scored for full brass ensemble, however this great arrangement for Trombone Quintet by Andrew Poirier is one of the favorites of the Canadian Trombone Ensemble iTromboni. For advanced performers, the work is about 2 minutes in length.

An impressive arrangement of the well known Fanfare from the 1912 ballet La Peri by French composer Paul Dukas. Expertly scored to retain the brilliant sound of the original which can be best described as a mix of Romantic tonal harmonies and Impressionistic orchestration techniques that create a distinctly French composition. The Golden Age is a programmatic composition in four movements. I Overture For the Netherlands, the seventeenth century was a period of great flourishing in the fields of economy, culture and politics; thus it is called the Golden Age. Overseas trade boomed, and the Dutch East India Company (known as the VOC by the Dutch) was founded and expanded to become a powerful -and, at the time - modern enterprise. II ¡Adiós españoles!(Farewell, Spaniards!) In 1567, the Spanish army invaded, led by the Duke of Alva. There was a fierce resistance against the Spanish tyranny; toward the end of the sixteenth century, the Dutch proclaimed theRepublic. However, the Spanish continued the war. Only with the Treaty of Münster in 1648 did the Dutch get their much sought-after independence. This was also the end of the Eighty Years’ War. III Rembrandt’s Night WatchThe field of culture, particularly literature, painting, sculpture, architecture, the art of printing, and cartography developed fast. It was in the Golden Age that the celebrated painter Rembrandt van Rijn created his famous Night Watch. IV The Admiral Overseas trade entailed the colonization of large areas in Asia, from where precious products that yielded lots of money were brought in. Surrounding countries were also involved in such practices. Colonizers poached on each other’s territories in the literal and figurative sense - in this context the Anglo-Dutch Sea Wars are legendary. The fourth movement starts with the English patriotic song Rule Britannia, after which the Dutch Admiral Michiel de Ruyter makes the English change their tune; one can even hear the roaring of cannons. When the smoke of battle has cleared, a small fragment of a Dutch song about Michiel de Ruyter appears, followed by a fitting closing.

Dan volgt ¡Adiós españoles! over het einde van de Tachtigjarige Oorlog.Rembrandt’s Night Watch beschrijft de ontwikkeling op cultureel gebied: in de Gouden Eeuw schilderde Rembrandt van Rijn zijn beroemde Nachtwacht. Deel vier, The Admiral, begint met Rule Britannia,waarna de Nederlandse admiraal Michiel de Ruyter de Engelsen een toontje lager laat zingen, er is zelfs kanongebulder te horen. Dan klinkt een fragment van het Nederlandse liedje dat aan Michiel de Ruyter is gewijd, waarna een passendslot volgt.

In dieser Periode erlebte das Land eine Blütezeit des (Übersee-)Handels, der Kultur und Politik, es befreite sich von der spanischen Herrschaft, brachte Kunstwerke wie Rembrandt’s Nachtwache hervor und entwickelte sich zu einer Kolonialmacht. Die Aufmerksamkeit der Zuhörer ist bei Kees Schoonenbeeks spannender musikalischer Geschichtsstunde garantiert!

Après une guerre qui dura 80 ans, l'Espagne reconnut finalement l'indépendance des Provinces-Unies néerlandaises, qui devinrent alors l’une des plus importantes puissances maritimes et économiques du XVIIe siècle. Cette période est connue sous le nom de Siècle d’or (The Golden Age) et correspond une phase de développement exceptionnel des Pays-Bas tant sur le plan colonial et militaire que sur le plan culturel, intellectuel et artistique.

A flashback is an interesting psychological phenomenon: a seemingly random trigger can bring back long-forgotten memories from the subconscious mind. The composer underwent a similar experience before writing this piece. He was asked to write a piece for The National Youth Fanfare Band in the Netherlands, one which he heard perform many years ago. All of a sudden he remembered Deep Harmony, a piece frequently programmed back then. He used his own flashback-experience as an inspiration to weave an old English hymn into his new composition, much like a musical flashback. The right idea at the right moment, as this piece will prove!

Een flashback is een psychologisch fenomeen: een hedendaagse belevenis roept zomaar uit het niets herinneringen uit het verleden op. Zo verging het ook Jan de Haan, toen hij een muziekstuk voor het Nationaal Jeugd Fanfare Orkest inopdracht kreeg. Het is het orkest waarin hij zelf ooit speelde. Plotseling viel hem het werk Deep Harmony in, een werk dat hij destijds vaak had gespeeld. Zijn flashback op dit Engelse kerklied nam hij als inspiratiebronen hij verwerkte het in dit nieuwe muziekstuk. De juiste inval op het juiste moment, zoals nu iedereen kan horen!

Ein Flashback ist ein psychologisches Phanomen: Eine Erfahrung weckt scheinbar aus dem Nichts die Erinnerung an lang Zurückliegendes. So ging es auch Jan de Haan, als er ein Stück für ein Jugendauswahlorchester der Niederlande, in dem er selbst einst mitspielte, schreiben sollte. Plotzlich fiel ihm ein damals oft programmiertes Stück namens Deep Harmony ein und er nahm diesen Flashback als Inspiration, dieses englische Kirchenlied in seinem neuen Werk zu verarbeiten. Der richtige Einfall im richtigen Moment, wie das Resultat beweist!

Des evenements du passe, imprimes dans la memoire a long terme, resurgissent comme une reponse inconsciente et soudaine a un stimulus lie a une experience anterieure.Cette œuvre a ete composee a l'occasion du cinquantieme anniversaire de l'Orchestre de Fanfare National des Jeunes des Pays-Bas, une formation talentueuse, dont Jan de Haan fut lui-meme membre, au cours des annees 1960. Jeune musicien, il eprouvait un profond respect pour le chef d'alors, Piebe Bakker (1929-2002), un homme passionne, avec un style de direction tres stimulant. En revenant sur cette periode, quarante ans apres, Jan de Haan a revecu lesnombreuses interpretations de la piece Deep Harmony. La melodie scintillante - extraite d'un cantique anglais - lui est alors apparue comme un flash-back et c'est comme un eclair mental qu'il a choisi de lui redonner vie dans le passage final de cette œuvre.

In The Pioneers Philip Sparke salutes the bicentenary of an expedition by two all time American heroes - Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. They were commissioned by US President Thomas Jefferson to find the headwaters of the Missouri and a route to the Pacific following the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the USA. They set out as the ‘Corps of Discovery’ from Louisville, Kentucky, in May 1804 and not only did they succeed in reaching the Pacific through hostile territory, but also found their way back - in 3 years! The piece is not descriptive of the journey but gives the composer the opportunity to celebrate the 200th anniversary of this amazing feat. Add a touchof the wild-west to any concert with this exciting work.

De titel van dit werk verwijst naar het begin van het avontuur van de ‘National Children’s Brass Band of Great Britain’, maar The Pioneers is ook een eerbewijs aan twee helden van de componist: Meriwether Lewis en William Clark,die twee eeuwen geleden op expeditie gingen in opdracht van de Amerikaanse president Thomas Jefferson. Ze vertrokken vanuit Louisville, Kentucky in mei 1804. Ze slaagden er niet alleen in om de Grote Oceaan te bereiken doorvijandig gebied, maar ze vonden ook hun weg terug - in drie jaar! Het werk beschrijft deze reis niet, maar geeft de componist de mogelijkheid om deze geweldige prestatie te memoreren.

Der Titel ist ein Salut an die Zweihundertjahrfeier einer Expedition von zwei Heldenfiguren des Komponisten - Meriwether Lewis und William Clark. Ihre Expeditionstruppe, bekannt als das ‘Corps of Discovery’, erforschte das Quellgebiet des Missouri und fand eine Route zum Pazifik durch feindliches Gebiet. Der Komponist ergriff die Gelegenheit, den 200. Jahrestag dieser Meisterleistung zu feiern, mit diesem Werk, das sich auch wunderbar zur Umrahmung Ihres nächsten festlichen Anlasses eignet.

Le 30 avril 1803, le Traité de cession de la Louisiane entre la France et les États-Unis était signé. L’acquisition de ces terres permet aux États-Unis de doubler la superficie de leur territoire de l’époque. Meriwether Lewis et William Clark sont alors mandatés par le président Thomas Jefferson, pour cartographier les sources du Missouri et tracer une voie vers le Pacifique. Parti de Louisville dans le Kentucky, en mai 1804, le corps expéditionnaire (‘Corps of Discovery’) traverse d’interminables territoires hostiles, réussit atteindre le Pacifique et rentre au terme d’un périple de deux ans ! Cette composition ne fait pas le récit du voyage, mais permet au compositeur decommémorer les deux cents ans de cette fabuleuse expédition.

L’acquisizione di queste terre permise agli Stati Uniti di raddoppiare la superficie del proprio territorio. L’allora presidente Thomas Jefferson incaricò Meriwether Lewis e William Clark di cartografare le sorgenti del fiume Missouri e tracciare la strada verso il Pacifico. Partita da Louisville (Kentucky), nel maggio del 1804, la spedizione attraversò interminabili territori ostili, riuscendo a raggiungere il Pacifico per poi tornare alla base di partenza al termine di un periplo durato due anni. Questo brano non è un racconto del viaggio, ma permette al compositoredi commemorare i duecento anni di questa favolosa spedizione.

This expressive piece depicts three periods that play an important role in the history of the American state of Virginia, the colonization, slavery, and the American Civil War. The first movement describes the adventures and hardships of the first colonists through lively American sounding themes.The expressive slow movement, in which a melancholic minor theme forms the starting point, depicts, with clever use of blues elements, the oppressed slaves on the tobacco plantation. This is followed by a illustration of the Civil War, heralded by ceremonial figures from the brass section. The work is brought to a close with a slow but optimistic theme heralding hope for the future.

De kolonisatie, de slavernij en de Amerikaanse Burgeroorlog: drie periodes die een belangrijke rol spelen in de geschiedenis van de staat Virginia. De expressieve inleiding geeft de avonturen en ontberingen van de eerste kolonistenweer. Vanaf 1619 voert Virginia ten behoeve van de tabaksplantages als eerste staat zwarte slaven in. Dit wordt uitgedrukt in een langzaam gedeelte, waarin een melancholiek mineurthema en elementen van de blues het uitgangspuntvormen. Het scherp koper kondigt de Amerikaanse Burgeroorlog aan. Het slotthema verklankt verlossing en hoop.

Auf der Landkarte sieht der amerikanische Staat Virginia wie ein etwas schief geratenes Dreieck aus. Diese Form schlägt sich bildhaft in der vorliegenden Komposition nieder, die den Staat aus drei verschiedenen Blickwinkeln beleuchtet, drei Zeitabschnitten, die für Virginia von besonderer Bedeutung waren: Die Kolonisation, die Sklaverei und der amerikanische Bürgerkrieg. Die bewegenden Ereignisse wurden in mal lebhafte, dann wieder langsame, in mal kämpferische, mal friedvolle und mal melancholische und schließlich optimistisch stimmende Musik umgesetzt. Ein ausdrucksstarkes Werk über ein bewegendes Stück amerikanischer Geschichte!

Pour composer cette oeuvre au caractère épique, Jacob de Haan s’est inspiré de trois périodes marquantes de l’histoire de l’État de Virginie : la colonisation, l’esclavage et la guerre de Sécession. L’introduction expressive dépeint les aventures et les difficultés affrontées par les premiers colons. Le second mouvement plus mélancolique développe un thème mélodique mineur aux accents de blues symbolisant le déplacement des esclaves noirs en route vers les plantations de tabac de la Virginie, l’un des premiers États esclavagistes américains. L’entrée brutale et soudaine des cuivres annonce le début de la guerre civile….
