The title makes refference to the Corpus Christi in Sevilla, which is the last topic in the first book of the Iberia Suite by Albeniz. Some measures from this work are quoted textually close to the end, and other fragments are paraphrased in a different context. For this reason, the score must be performed as an independent work or inmediately after Albeniz's piece, but never before! If the work is played together with the work of the Iberia Suite, the meter of the Allegro must be the same that the one in Albeniz's work. It happens the same with the quoted measures in the Coda. The score only can be played with a piano provided with a 3rd pedal, because the first section is based on the resonances that the pedal produces.

The Spanish composer and pianist Isaac Albeniz (1860-1909) was one of the leading members of the Nationalist school that dominated Spanish music at the turn of the last century. One of his best known works is theSuite Espanola (Op.47); a collection of works for solo Piano inspired by different regions and musical cultures of Spain, first published in 1887. Castilla was included after his death by a publisher, andtaken from an earlier work. It is a piece for solo Piano in the Seguidilla style, which traces its origins to a Castilian folk dance.

The Sonatas de Paris are divided into two books. Comellas began the series in early 1952 and they were finished in 1955. As with most of his works, he composed without having a plan to premier them or a commission. So upon having them completed, he filed them away. On many occasions, his close friend Jordi Giro would read thrue the pieces or Anna Ricci would sing his songs, but very little of his music was performed during his life time.

The two books entitled Sonatas de Paris are really to books with totally different character. The first book is made up of short piano pieces in a neo baroque style. More than following strict forms of the baroque suite, the pieces are more a evoking of the baroque style. Book one loosely follows the idea of a suite or ordre, where as book two is much freer in structure being made up of various pieces, a few in memory of his favored composers (Albeniz, Debussy, and Granados) ending with a group of four dances, Las indias danzantes [Dances of the Indian girls], that refer to an Indian dance. This group of dances is not really playable by one pianist and seems to be really meant to be performed piano 4 hands, but since there is no note about this in the score it is hard to say. A few of these pieces were performed by Rosa Sabater in Paris in 1980.

The present edition is based on manuscripts that are in the Joan Comellas deposit in the National Catalonian Library in Barcelona.

A delightful combination of lyrical themes with rhythmic exuberance and folk-like melodies. Viva Espania is based on themes by two 19th-century Spanish composers. The opening theme is from Recuerdos de la Alhambra by Francisco Tarrega. That piece is a traditional Spanish waltz and was inspired by the famous Alhambra Castle in Grenada. The second theme is by Isaac Albeniz from a suite of music for the piano, Songs of Spain, entitled Leyenda. This section, while still in 3/4 has a fiery exuberance much like one would expect from a flamenco guitarist, yet it's very playable by young players. Authentic Spanish music that's a terrific addition to any concert performance!

About C.L. Barnhouse Command Series

The Barnhouse Command Series includes works at grade levels 2, 2.5, and 3. This series is designed for middle school and junior high school bands, as well as high school bands of smaller instrumentation or limited experience. Isaac Albéniz (1860-1909) wrote his suite España (Espagna), Op. 165, also known as Seis Hojas de Album (Six Album Leaves) for piano in 1889, with the first performance taking place on June 7th of the following year, at the Steinway Hall in London. Each of the six movements recreates a traditional Spanish dance or evokes Spanish folk music. Famed American violinist, composer, and pedagogue Samuel Dushkin completed this arrangement for violin and piano that included three of the movements: 1. Malagueña, 2. Canción Catalan (or Capricho Catalan), 3. Tango. The middle movement is here presented alone. Reprint edition.
