The title, Aerius, is a Latin term meaning “soaring†or “rising aloftâ€. This piece is signature Carl Strommen at his best. The piece begins with a lush brass chorale that is developed before leading to an energetic presto section. The composition comes full circle and finishes with a majestic return of the chorale material from the opening. A welcome addition to the repertoire. The title Aerius is a Latin term meaning “soaring†or “rising aloft.†The students chose this title to signify the forward momentum and overall journey of their time in the high school band program. With new events and performances, and a first time commissioning a work, this piece signifies the great strides the band has made in recent years. The opening brass chorale section should be played very connected, observing the two-measure phrasing and breathing as one cohesive unit. The Presto section at m. 25 should be taken between 165-170 bpm. the vibraphone soloist should use medium-hard mallets with the pedal on. The sustained notes at m. 41 should be played way under the upper woodwinds to get the greatest effect as it builds in volume and intensity in m. 49, and again into m. 57.At m. 69, the percussion must sustain the pulse to the conductor’s tempo, careful not to add accents they’re hearing among the other sections. After the ritardando in m. 83, push the tempo at m. 85 slightly to where the woodwinds feel comfortable playing the triplet figure with appropriate breathing and phrasing.- Andrew Monsen, Hauppauge High School Band Director, June 2017.

Adler had set three poems of Pulitzer prize-winning poet Donald Justice for voice and piano, specifically for the marvelous voice of Renee Fleming. He was then asked to orchestrate the songs for premiere by the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra, and added a fourth Justice poem to round out the cycle and strengthen it. A piano/vocal score is available (CY2854, $14.25), and we are pleased to now offer the full orchestra score, as well.

Made popular by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's Grammy winning performance in 1959, Peter Wilhousky's famous arrangement of Battle Hymn of the Republic has remained a staple to this day. In this Critical Edition for Band edited by Justin P. Tokke, a new arrangement has been crafted based on Wilhousky's original orchestral scoring. To enhance playability, generous cross-cuing and doubling of the choral parts have been applied in cases where the band version is played without voices. This new arrangement ensures complete compatibility with both the choral and orchestral versions, with matching measure numbers and rehearsal marks, and comes complete with a full score and parts produced with modern engraving standards. This exciting edition is ready to continue Wilhousky's legacy and hopes to inspire future collaboration and new performance opportunities.

While Western polyphonic music achieved its pinnacle in the fugue, rhythmic polyphony of great complexity evolved in Cuba. It is particularly the 'bata' (drumming music originating in the Afro-Cuban 'Santeria' cult), the 'rumba' and the 'son' (ancestor of the famous 'salsa') which have provided me with my inspiration. I employ the quartet in the manner of a drumming ensemble and each individual string corresponds to the sound of a particular drum. The quartet plays on scordatura open strings employing a rich palette of percussive playing techniques recreating the different types of drumming attacks. Thierry Pecou.

George Frederic Handel (1685-1759) is a German composer whose musical legacy has lasted over three hundred years. While most people know his Hallelujah Chorus from the oratorio The Messiah, many of his other compositions are still performed around the world, including La Rejouissance from the Royal Fireworks Suite. The suite was commissioned by King George of England to celebrate the Treaty of Aix-La-Chapel. King George said he wanted only wind and percussion instruments, specifically requesting “no fiddles.†12,000 people attended the dress rehearsal of the concert. In contrast, the actual performance happened in the rain, which meant many of the fireworks did light, but managed to set the immense pavilion on fire. Handel later added strings to the Royal Fireworks Suite for a charity performance for The Foundling Hospital of London. For young students, the character of Handel’s music is defined by the types of bow strokes. Quarter notes should be played with a detached bow stroke with a hint of an accent. Eighth notes may be played more connected but will sound best with a slight detachè stroke. If more advanced students join the performance, a minimized vibrato is typical of music from the Baroque era. Terraced dynamics may be practiced by stopping just before the dynamic change and adjusting the weight of the bow arm, then proceeding in the new dynamic such as in measures 37-39.

The chiaroscuro-technique developed by painters of the Italian renaissance served to intensify contrasts and effects of optical depth. In Klar/Obskur, I tried to transfer the general idea of this technique on the rather unusual instrumentation of two double-reed woodwinds and piano. On the one hand, a clear, well articulated playing is characteristic for these instruments, on the other hand, they have an often underestimated potential of 'twilight': air-sounds and fragile, shady colours have a especially attractive when being produced by double-reed instruments (which are often, and superficially regarded as being less capable of differentiated sounds than flute or clarinet). The piano, too, has a broad bandwidth of possibilities between percussive and delicate playing to complement the woodwinds which, in return, can absorb and continue the fading piano sounds. The beginning introduces the two contrasting elements that form the basic material for the piece: a clear, sharp chord, followed by fragile, dim sounds. The changes between these elements as well as their combination and amalgamation produce an enormous spectrum of colours and gesture. After this 'motto-like' opening follow four quite clearly separated short sections, each of them being characterised by a well-defined texture: a partly almost imperceptible air-sound passage, a short sequence of microintervallic notes, a burst of virtuosity and a recourse to the fragile sounds of the beginning. The second, longer main part consists of three sections merging subtly into each other: a short unisono-passage, marked elastic [federnd], is being dissolved into its basic elements; from these remainders, a confrontation of low, 'arcane' bassoon and piano sounds and a strongly ornamented melodic line of the oboe emerges, leading to a short but powerful climax. The piece is concluded by an extended, relaxed epilogue, containing a short piano solo and a duet of oboe and bassoon and, finally, a quotation of the 'elastic' character of the middle section.Benjamin Schweitzer.

Homeward is a lyrical ballad in ABA form. The composition presents few rhythmic challenges, allowing the ensemble to concentrate on beauty of sound, balance, dynamic nuance, phrasing, and expressive performance. The woodwind voices present the melody at the opening accompanied by a flute countermelody. Care should be taken to balance the two parts. The four-measure phrases call for tapered dynamics and freedom of the metric pulse at cadence points. A change of tempo and key, with a lean toward the minor mode, mark the contrasting B section (m. 9). Heed the dynamic markings that swell to a climax (m. 16) and then subside within this section. Take liberty to hold back the tempo at the percussion link to the forte restatement of A (m. 27) and the arrival of the fortissimo climax (m. 33). The coda (m. 35) should be presented slowly and serenely as the composition comes to a quiet close.
