The French composer Jules Massenet (1842-1912) is best known for his operas. His most popular composition is the Meditation, the violin solo from his opera THAIS (1894). The violin and piano version is by Martin Marsick. ON WINGS OF SONG is from Felix Mendelssohn's (1809-1847) popular song cycle Op 34/2. The violin transcription is by Joseph Achron. This transcription has been in the repertory of many of the great violinists past and present.

In the last year of his life, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847) composed the six charming Children's Pieces, op. 72 (EB 8317). In contrast to the collections of children's pieces (by Schumann or Reger, for example), these have remained relatively unknown. Admittedly, however, they here and there demand technical and musical accomplishments that are beyond those to be expexted of beginners and belong to an intermediate stage of instruction. In the present edition, minor re-arrangements and cuts (in op. 72 no. 6) are intended to make the music more accessible to a child's understanding. The Songs without Words presented here are musically more demanding. From the total of 48 pieces, I have selected three slow compositions in which simple, beautiful melodie lines are supported by chorale-like piano textures. True performance of these pieces requires clean polyphonic chord playing and a cultivated pedal technique. The selection of pieces in this edition will, it is hoped, stimulate renewed interest in the piano music of Mendelssohn, which is so neglected today. While Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) modestly refers to Hear My Prayer (Hör' mein Bitten) in G Major, WoO 15, as a trifle, it is among his most popular works for chorus. On the autograph score, he inscribed the following: A sacred Solo, for a Soprano and Chorus, with Organ accompaniment, composed for W. Bartholomew, Esq., by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. William Bartholomew wrote the text, which is derived on Psalm 55, and requested that Mendelssohn set it to music. This version premiered on January 8, 1845, at Crosby Hall in London. In 1847, Mendelssohn orchestrated the work, but he passed before he could hear this version, which premiered on December 21, 1848, in Dublin. Score and parts for orchestral accompaniment available separately. This edition adds reheasal numbers that match between the score, parts, and choral score.

'Songs Without Words' - that's what Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847) called his lyrical piano pieces, romantic miniatures in which the composer wanted to 'sing' on the keyboard instrument. With them, he invented an entirely new form of chamber music playing in the 19th century. These 'Songs' are also perfectly suitable for duet playing: for a melodic instrument with piano accompaniment. The 'Song Without Words' Op 30/3 is a rewarding lyrical solo piece.

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) wrote his Violin Concerto in E minor over a six-year period from 1838 to 1844 for his childhood friend, the violinist Ferdinand David, who contributed the cadenza in the version of the concerto most performed today. The concerto premiered on March 13, 1845 in Leipzig, but Mendelssohn himself was unable to conduct due to illness. Unlike most concerti of the time, Mendelssohn has the violin enter immediately without any orchestral introduction, and its cadenza is unusually placed after the development of the first movement instead of at the end of the movement. Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) wrote Capriccio Brillant, Op. 22 during his second vist to England. This charming example of Mendelssohn's writing for piano has two movements: an Andante with a gentle, reflective melody and an Allegro con fuoco that shatters the previous languid mood with a cascade of arpeggios that leads into a march-like principal theme. The solo piano part never lapses into dazzling technique for its own sake. It premiered in London by the Philharmonic Society on May 25th, 1832. In 1840, the King of Prussia invited Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) to accept a lofty musical appointment in the French Academie Royale. A few years later, Wilhelm IV commissioned the composer to write incidental music to a religious drama by Jean Racine, ATHALIE, based on the queen of Judah during Jehoram's reign. It was intended for a private performance on December 1, 1845 and saw its first public performance on January 8th of the following year.
