Laudate Regem - or Praise the King! After a reign of 33 years, Beatrix, Queen of the Netherlands, stepped down from the throne to make way for her eldest son Willem-Alexander. For this special occasion, Matthias van Nispen tot Pannerden haswritten a majestic work for the Royal Netherlands Air Force Orchestra, which sounded at precisely the moment the new king left the Nieuwe Kerk after his inauguration. A festive work for a memorable occasion!

Deze muziek werd gespeeld op het moment dat de koninklijke familie de Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam verliet, en het werd door de Kapel van de Koninklijke Luchtmacht tevens gespeeld tijdens de NationaleHerdenkingsplechtigheid op 4 mei. Na een korte beginfanfare volgt een prachtige, gedragen melodie waarin even muzikaal verwezen wordt naar het Wilhelmus. Naar het eind toe volgt een overweldigend slot. Met dit werk is het altijd even opnieuw 30 april2013...

Laudate Regem, oder: Preiset den König! Nach einer Regierungszeit von 33 Jahren hat Beatrix, Königin der Niederlande, am 30. April 2013 den Thron für ihren ältesten Sohn Willem-Alexander frei gemacht. Für diesen besonderen Anlassschrieb Matthias van Nispen tot Pannerden ein majestätisches Werk für das Orchester der Königlich Niederländischen Luftwaffe, die genau in dem Moment erklang, als der neue König die Nieuwe Kerk nach seiner Amtseinführung in Amsterdamverließ. Albastum is a proud, stately concert march written in classic A-B-A form. It opens with a festive fanfare in the brass section, followed by a lively, bright theme, symbolising the joy of playing music together at each weekly rehearsal. Following a melodious trio, a counter theme develops and the march comes to an exciting close with a reprise of the original theme.

Albastum is een majestueuze concertmars. Stijn Roels schreef hem in de klassieke A-B-A-vorm. De vreugde die muzikanten aan musiceren beleven, komt bijzonder goed tot uitdrukking. Orkestrale wisselingen tussen de bas en de discantin het eerste deel laten de bijzondere klankkleuren van de verschillenden instrumentgroepen goed zien. Een melodieus trio en de reprise van deel A ronden de mars af. Echt zo’n mars waaraan iedereen plezier beleeft!

In diesem stolzen, majestätischen Konzertmarsch, der in einer klassischen A-B-A-Form geschrieben ist, kommt die Freude aller Musiker an ihrem Spiel zum Ausdruck. Orchestrale Wechsel zwischen Bass und Diskant im ersten Teil heben die besonderen Klangfarben der einzelnen Instrumentengruppen sehr schön hervor. Ein melodiöses Trio und die Reprise von Teil A runden diesen Marsch ab, der dem gesamten Blasorchester und Publikum Freude bringen wird!

Albastum est une majestueuse marche de concert, conforme la structure classique A-B-A. Elle débute avec une fanfare festive, suivie d’un changement de couleurs obtenu par l’alternance entre les cuivres graves, les saxophones et les euphoniums. La partie B - un trio mélodieux - a été confiée aux clarinettes. Un charmant contre-chant plane au-dessus du thème principal. Il s’ensuit une reprise de la partie initiale (partie A) avec, en prime, un contre-chant taillé sur mesure pour les fl tes et les clarinettes.

Four roads lead to Santiago, so begins the Book of the Pilgrim. Written in the 12th century, the Codex Calixtinus opened the way for pilgrimage from most cities in Europe and North Africa to Santiago de Compostela, in Spain. Compostela - The Way of St James describes the pilgrims' journey. After a slow introduction, a brilliant theme announces the start of the journey. The arrival in Spain is indicated by incantatory chants and majestic chords. Finally, the music softens as the pilgrims venerate St James.

‘Er leiden vier wegen naar Santiago’ zo begint het boek der pelgrims. De Codex Calixtinus, geschreven in de 12e eeuw, effende indertijd de weg voor pelgrimages vanuit de meeste steden in Europa en Noord-Afrika naar het Spaanse Santiago de Compostela. Compostela - The Way of St James (Compostela de weg van de heilige Jakobus) is een beschrijving van zo’n pelgrimstocht. Na een langzame inleiding kondigt een stralend thema het begin van de reis aan. De aankomst in Spanje wordt gemarkeerd door bezwerende melodieën en majestueuze akkoorden. Tot slot wordt de muziek zachter om de diepe eerbied van de pelgrims voor de heilige Jakobus te verklanken.

Echoes from Within is a dramatic piece that must be played with emotion. The opening cadenza should be played in an uplifting manner. Care should be taken by the soloist not to rush this section. The Andante cantabile section should be played in a very expressive manner. The director is encouraged to use rubato, accelerando, ritardando, and other expressive means to achieve a romantic style during this section. At m. 40, the style should be light and dance-like in character. The director should make sure that the percussion parts do not dominate this section. The vibraphone and marimba must be heard throughout this section, except when marked forte. The second cadenza (m. 149) should be played with emotion. The section beginning at m. 150 should be played in a fanfare-like style, very bold and majestic.
