Elgar's Serenade for Strings was composed in 1892 and represents the first of his works with which the 35-year-old composer was truly satisfied. Whether, as often claimed, it derives from three pieces for strings from 1888 can no longer be ascertained, since only the titles of those pieces âSpring Songâ, âElegyâ and âFinaleâ, have come down to us. However, these titles would also characterise the movements of the Serenade surprisingly well. Posterity shares Elgar's positive assessment to the present day: the Serenade op. 20 is not only one of his most popular compositions, but is among the most frequently played works in the string-orchestra literature. Edited by British Elgar specialist Rupert Marshall-Luck, this classic now appears in Henle Urtext as conducting score, performance material and handy study edition.

Moonlight Serenade was composed in 1939, by Glenn Miller in his typically American big-band style. It was an immediate success and it even became the signature tune of Glenn Miller. The catchy melody has since been used in various films and television series. It has been performed in many styles, from romantic to swinging. The Flanders Recorder Quartet likes to play this work with a low recorder consort: tenor, F bass, C bass, great bass (each instrument then plays an octave lower). This gives the work a slightly “close harmony†feel. Classical ReminiscencesDuring his time as conductor of the Detmold court orchestra, the young Brahms was inspired by the local wind ensemble to compose two serenades. Serenade No. 2, scored for five pairs of winds, violas, cellos, and string basses (leaving out the violins) is strongly reminiscent in sound of Mozart's wind serenades. The expressive Adagio is the heart of the five-movement work. Quite untypical of Brahms, he acquired a liking for the work from the outset, still undertaking a revision scarcely 15 years after the premiere of 1860; this has now been made available in a new practical edition based on the Johannes Brahms Complete Edition (JBG).

When Dvorák wrote his Serenade for 10 winds and 2 lower strings in January 1878, the heyday of the great wind serenades and “Harmoniemusik†wind ensembles was already long gone. He was probably inspired by hearing Mozart's Gran Partita shortly beforehand in Vienna. The home key of d minor here is striking, as is the often serious, even tragic atmosphere that repeatedly darkens the otherwise cheerful mood that is typical of the serenade genre. Perhaps this was a reaction to the death of two of his children just a few months earlier. Despite the work's dramatic character - or perhaps because of it - Dvorák's Serenade was taken up in many European cities soon after its first performance in Prague, and fêted as a significant contribution to the chamber music repertoire for wind instruments. The autograph sources in Prague have been consulted for this Urtext edition. The parts are printed with player-friendly page divisions, perfect page-turning opportunities, and practical alternative parts in F for the three horns.

Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) was a pianist and composer of international stature and one of the towering figures of early 20th century music. He left behind an ouvre consisting of some 170 works, many of which await discovery or are known only in forms far removed from the composer's intentions.
