Laudate Dominum is a charming motet beginning with a calm ostinato bass line. The other voices enter one by one, until the pretty theme in the altos, central idea of the piece, completed with a counterpoint in the sopranos. After a short series of heavenly variations, the middle sections begins, more rhythmic, vigorous and harmonically various. A triumphant repetition of the main theme in the tenors introduces the last part of the piece, initially based on the same material of the first one, but then continuing with a long and expressive Coda that completes the work with bright solemnity.

According to Rautavaara The name of the work is a quotation from the libretto of my opera The House of the Sun: . . .like a butterfly in a dark autumn garden. . .. The motif to which these words are sung is the theme for the variations in the first movement. Their texture gradually grows and becomes denser. Following on without a break is a slow, poetic movement of even rhythms and dynamics. The quick, lively finale begins giocoso e leggiero. But autumn is also a time of colour, and of death. At the end the music thus turns into a festive dance con grandezza. Maybe it bears the echo of a sarabande to the dying splendour of summer - or as T.S. Eliot put it: late roses filled with early snow. Autumn Gardens was commissioned by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and premiered at the London Proms in July 1999.

Allegro Moderato in C The main theme starts the piece with an accent on the tonic arpeggio. Counterpoint principle is also used thanks to a canon in two measures. 2. Andantino Rubato in G Written in the form ABA, this movement is then continued by four variations of the theme. 3. Final in G The piece ends on a coda with harmonious arpeggios, played after a ternary dance. Reynaldo Hahn was a naturalised French composer, conductor, theatre director and singer. Best known as a composer of songs, he also wrote many pieces and melodies for different instruments.&rdquo.

The first movement of my Piano Quintet is filled with drama and passion. Its atmosphere can be related to my Second Symphony Johannes Angelos. The second movement is a set of polyphonic variations in a form reminiscent of a passacaglia. The music seems to be hypnotized by a theme consisting of a chromatic cluster of ten notes. In the beginning of the last movement, materials from the previous movements start to reappear, but this time in a mysterious, incoherent way. The strings find new music resembling a fragmented hymn. Fast-moving triplets start to appear and the music reaches a joyful and ecstatic conclusion. Olli Mustonen.

The Austrian composer Franz Schubert wrote his famous song The Trout (D550) in 1817. This song reappeared as the basis of a set of variations for the fourth movement of the renowned Trout Quintet, so-named as a reference to the title of the song. Robert van Beringen used the lively theme for The Trout Fantasy, which he has written for a five-part brass ensemble.The instrumentation means that this piece can be performed in various combinations: trumpet 1 and 2 in B flat, horn in F (or horn in E flat), trombone (or euphonium) and tuba (or trombone, euphonium, tuba in E flat).In 1817 schreef de Oostenrijkse componist Franz Schubert het bekende lied Die Forelle (opus 32). Methods of Cooking originated as a piece for brass septet that was later arranged for the brass quintet format. It is a multimovement work that explores several variations of a main theme that is found throughout all four movements. Each movement seeks to evoke a certain style associated with a type of cooking. The first movement, Simmer , introduces the main thematic material of the piece from the beginning. Simmering indicates a temperature below boiling that generally is softer or gentler in food preparation. Hence, the movement is a bit more restrained, without breaking up the material a great deal. Boil follow as the second movement, and as the temperature rises, so too does the pace of the music! Boiling can sometimes lead to chaotic situations in the kitchen, and the movement looks to capture the energy of both the food as it boils, as well as the preparer as they make their way around the kitchen. This variation brings the thematic material into 6/8 time, as well as introducing new ideas that help make the music even more dynamic. The third movement slows things back down with Braise , which tends to be a longer method of cooking. The thematic material is surrounded with thicker harmonies and slowly announced throughout the movementI! this mimics the richness of flavor often associated with braising foods, and signifies the amount of time this process often takes to complete. Sautee is the final movement and looks to stay true to its original meaning in French, to jump or bounce. The melody quickly bounces back and forth between various instruments and the entire movement is bright and playful throughout. It also serves as a high energy ending to bring the entire piece together.
