The opening of this three-movement work features an initial appearance of the thematic material that returns in various guises later on in the work. The leitmotiv centres on a minor second. A range of thematic variations is heard in the lively and energetic Metamorphosis One. This movement is interrupted by an atmospheric meno mosso, containing melodic passages that return to the opening theme.Metamorhosis Two is characterised by various changes in tempo and musical character. Seven different soloists transform the thematic material each in their own way. This eventually culminates in a passionate tutti passage.The source of inspiration for Metamorphosis Three is the so-called BACH-motif, a musical autograph consisting of the notes B flat, A, C and B. This distinctive motif arises from the leitmotiv (here a descending minor second), which continuesto evolve through various transpositions and transformations. For the composer, this spectacular last movement is an homage to one of the greatest and most influential composers in the history of music: Johann Sebastian Bach.An impressive contest piece commissioned by Brass Band Schoonhoven, performed at the 2014 European Brass Band Championships.
In de opening van deze driedelige compositie wordt het thematische materiaal gepresenteerd dat verderop in het werk in allerlei transformaties voorkomt. De ‘kleine secunde’ dient daarbij als leidmotief. In het levendige en flitsende Metamorphosis One wordt volop gevarieerd met de thematiek. Het deel wordt onderbroken door een sfeervol meno mosso met daarin melodische passages die teruggrijpen op het beginthema.In Metamorhosis Two treden veel veranderingen op in het tempo en het muzikale karakter. Zeven verschillende solisten transformeren ieder op hun eigen wijze het thematische materiaal. Uiteindelijk resulteert dat in een gepassioneerd, tuttigespeeld gedeelte.De inspiratiebron voor Metamorphosis Three is het zogenaamde BACH-motief, een muzikale handtekening met de noten Bes, A, C en B. Dit karakteristieke motief ontstaat vanuit het leidmotief (in dit geval een dalende kleine secunde) en verandert voortdurend van gedaante door allerlei transposities en omvormingen. Der Satz wird von einem stimmungsvollen Meno mosso aus melodischen Passagen, die zum Eröffnungsthema zurückführen, unterbrochen.Metamorphosis Two ist von mehreren Wechseln im Tempo und im musikalischen Charakter geprägt. Sieben verschiedene Solisten verwandeln das thematische Material jedes auf seine eigene Weise. Das Ganze steigert sich schließlich zu einemfulminanten Tutti.Quelle der Inspiration für Metamorphosis Three ist das so genannte BACH-Motiv, eine musikalische Signatur aus den Tönen B, A, C und H. Dieses ausgeprägte Motiv geht aus dem Leitmotiv hervor (hier ist es eine absteigende kleine Sekunde),welches fortwährend durch verschiedene Transpositionen und Transformationen weiterentwickelt wird. Für den Komponisten ist dieser spektakuläre letzte Satz eine Hommage an einen der größten und einflussreichsten Komponisten der Musikgeschichte: JohannSebastian Bach.Le titre Metamorphosis décrit une transformation musicale – autrement dit, le processus qui commence avec nos origines (Initium), puis progresse à travers l’évolution du corps et de l’ me (Corpus, Animus) et enfin, gr ceà l’expérience de la vie (Virtus, Invidia), se développe en une personnalité adulte (Estasi).Les musiciens connaîtront des états d’esprit changeants, entretenant la conscience de ce qui a été et de ce qui sera (le présent et l’avenir) tout en jouant. Les passages d’improvisation ont été délibérément laissés vierges –sans notation – afin de permettre à l’instrumentiste d’évoluer sans contraintes dans ce style musical et de laisser libre cours à son imagination.

This stately concert opener was originally written by Jan Van der Roost for a special event in which six respected wind orchestras (two Belgian and four Dutch) of different composition (two symphonic bands, two fanfare bands and two brass bands) were featured during six concerts. Each evening brought forth a performance by a symphonic band, a fanfare, and brass band, so that the audience could experience all three types of ensembles. This was indeed an original concept.The name, ConZEnSus, comes from a combination of the words, ‘Concert Cyclus’ (concert series) and ‘zes’ (Dutch for ‘six’). This leads to a new word, which refers to ‘consensus’. The general tenor of the cycle isthus immediately indicated. The richness of color of the various ensembles is revealed through an open and friendly atmosphere. During all six concerts (over a span of three years), ConZEnSus functioned as a permanent opening number for each orchestra. Thus the same musical story was portrayed in three different packages.

Trittico Festoso is a festive three-part composition that is dedicated to the conductor of a brass band. Each of the three movements reflects a different aspect of his character: in the opening fanfare, his personality is presented; then his work as manager, organiser and conductor is depicted in the dynamic Daily Life; while in The Artist, the sensitive, creative man himself is portrayed. An elegant tribute to the man with the baton! Trittico Festoso is een feestelijk werk in drie delen dat is opgedragen aan de dirigent van een brassband. Elk deel weerspiegelt een aspect van zijn karakter: in de openingsfanfare wordt zijn persoonlijkheid gepresenteerd; dan wordt zijn werk als manager, organisator en dirigent beschreven in het dynamische Daily Life; waarna zijn gevoelige, creatieve kant wordt belicht in The Artist. Een charmant eerbetoon aan de man het het dirigeerstokje!Trittico Festoso ist ein festliches Triptychon, das dem Dirigenten einer Brass Band gewidmet wurde. Jeder der drei Sätze reflektiert einen anderen Aspekt: In den Eröffnungsfanfaren wird seine Person vorgestellt, dann tritt er im dynamischen Satz Daily Life als Manager, Organisator und Dirigent in den Vordergrund, während The Artist den einfühlsamen Künstler portraitiert. Chacun des trois mouvements reflète un aspect différent de son caractère : dans la fanfare d’ouverture, sa personnalité est présentée ; puis son travail comme manager, organisateur et dirigeant est dépeint dans le dynamique Daily Life ; tandis que dans The Artist, l’homme sensible, créatif est représenté. Polish Christmas Lights is a collection of three traditional Polish Christmas carols arranged for brass ensemble with flexible instrumentation. These three themes are used throughout the composition, with some variation here and there. Add a little sparkle to your Christmas concert with Polish Christmas Lights. Polish Christmas Lights is een compilatie van drie traditionele Poolse kerstliederen. De drie liederen in dit arrangement zijn Lulaj¿e Jezuniu (Slaap, kleine Jezus), Dzisiaj w Betlejem (Vandaag in Betlehem) en Gdy liczna panna (Moeder Maria wiegde haar kind). Deze drie mooie thema’s zijn door de hele compositie heen verwerkt, hier en daar met enige variatie. Troika is a Russian word that means a group of three but it also means a light Russian sleigh pulled by three horses. Christmas Troika portrays the joy of Christmas via a musical sleigh-ride. Listen as the glistening snow crinkles beneath the weight of the sleigh and the hooves of the prancing horses as it travels through the countryside. One can almost see the frost on the trees and hear the wind blow and the sleigh-bells ring as the tune O Come, All Ye Faithful winds its way through the music.Troika ist ein russisches Wort für einen dreiarmigen Leuchter oder einen dreispännigen Schlitten. Letzterer ist auch in diesem weihnachtlichen Stück für Brass Band gemeint, der eine Schlittenfahrt durch ein verschneite Winterlandschaft beschreibt. Durch die Musik kann man förmlich die Eiszapfen an den Bäumen sehen und die Schlittenglocken hören, während die Fahrt zu den Klängen von Herbei, o ihr Gläubigen ihren Lauf nimmt...

Alpina Brass was the test piece for the first division of the Fêtes Cantonales on 8 and 9 June 2019 in Naters, Switzerland. It consists of three movements, and features a variety of aspects, as is common for a competitionwork. However, as a whole, it has been written in such a way that it can perfectly serve as a concert work as well. It is a challenging piece for every section and offers colourful and melodic as well as spectacular rhythmicsequences and a most impressive ending!Alpina Brass was het verplichte werk voor de eerste divisie van de Fêtes Cantonales op 8 en 9 juni 2019 in het Zwitserse Naters. Het is drieledig van vorm en er komen allerlei aspecten in aan bod, zoals dat voor eenconcourswerk gebruikelijk is. Het is echter zodanig geschreven dat het ook prima als concertwerk kan fungeren. Deze compositie bevat uitdagingen voor alles secties, evenals kleurrijke en melodische maar ook spectaculaireritmische opeenvolgingen en een indrukwekkend slotgedeelte! Alpina Brass war das Prüfungsstück für die erste Division beim Kantonalen Musikfest am 8. und 9. Juni 2019 in Naters (Schweiz). Es besteht aus drei Sätzen und zeichnet sich durch verschiedenste Aspekte aus, wie es beiWettbewerbsstücken üblich ist. Insgesamt ist es jedoch so geschrieben, dass es sich auch bestens als Konzertstück eignet. Das Stück ist für alle Instrumentengruppen anspruchsvoll und bietet lebendige, melodische, aber auchspektakuläre rhythmische Sequenzen sowie einen beindruckenden Schluss! Alpina Brass est l’œuvre imposée pour la première division des Fêtes Cantonales des 8 et 9 juin 2019 Naters, Suisse. Elle comprend trois mouvements, et inclut une multitude d’éléments différents, typiques pour une œuvrede concours. Cependant, dans son ensemble, le style de composition veut qu’elle convienne aussi parfaitement comme œuvre de concert. Cette composition est exigeante pour tous les registres et offre des séquences tout aussi variéeset mélodieuses que spectaculaires et rythmiques jusqu’ une fin fort impressionnante.
