The Stabat Mater is the last work composed by Giuseppe Verdi. He completed it in 1897 at the age of 84. One year later it was published with the somewhat earlier Te Deum as part of the Quattro pezzi sacri. Verdi set Mary's meditation in the face of her crucified son, a classic of Medieval Latin poetry, in an operatically expressive style for choir and large orchestra. Verdi's Stabat Mater is now published for the first time in a critical edition. Also available in the series Choir & organ. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2729400.

Puccini's first known sacred work was composed during his school days at the Istituto Pacini in Lucca. It was first performed there in 1877. The text was a hymn to the Patron Saint of Lucca which was probably written by the composer himself. The work was so popular that by 1880 it had received three further performances, though it was also inserted in the Messa a 4 voci, after the Credo. Thereafter it disappeared from the music world and was only first rediscovered in the 1990s. Since, with the exception of the lack of a solo tenor in the piece, it is identical with this one in the Messa, for this reason it would seem only natural to perform these two works together. He who seeks a moving and lyrical work with rewarding roles for the choir could do no better than to choose Rheinberger's Stern von Bethlehem. In nine scenes (Expectation, The shepherds, The appearance of the angels, The Star, etc.) the Christmas story is lyrically portrayed. Songlike and pastoral choruses, a heartfelt soprano part and finally, the exotic, charming procession of the Wisemen through the desert have insured this work an increasing popularity. It was written in 1890 to a libretto by Rheinberger's wife Fanny. On account of their similar scoring, this work can be easily combined for a performance with Mendelssohn's Vom Himmel hoch or Die Geburt Christi.

The Missa Sancti Henrici is a work of Biber's later years. It is one of his largest and most mature pieces of church music. With the skillful alternation of the stile antico and the stile moderno, as well as the contrast between Solo and Tutti, Biber attained a structure within the individual movements rich in variety. In its original architectural conception, Salzburg Cathedral had four galleries, each with its own organ, on the piers supporting the dome at the crossing. This conception created the spatial prerequisite for double- and polychoral performance tradition on the Venetian model. Biber's magnificent sacred music brought this tradition to a point of culmination in a ,,colossal style that was unique in transalpine Europe.
