Based on Abraham Lincoln's famous speech in 1858 about slavery, this contemplative work weaves original material with America to depict the tension in the House of Representatives. Often, the melody to America is altered melodically and harmonically as moments of anger, rage and fear dissolve into quirky moments of patriotism. The end of the work is magical, as the words let freedom ring are sung by the ensemble to leave the audience speechless.

This evocative concert piece begins with a dreamy introduction in which we here the firt theme. The musical tension is gradually increased in the Grandioso with a new forceful theme being heard. These ever present two themes are further developed with the introduction of striking rhythmic patters bringing the work to a climax.

This powerful work depicts the frantic voyage of the RMS Carpathia, the first ship to arrive on the scene after receiving a distress call from the Titanic. Determined to save as many lives as possible, the captain managed to squeeze 17 knots out of a supposed 14-knot vessel. The music depicts the vibrations of the ship's hull along with the hissing of the boiler. As Carpathia arrives on the terrible scene, the music relinquishes its fast pace to a slow, mournful hymn. After a brief moment of tranquility, the music intensifies as the rescue ship embarks on her triumphant yet tragic return voyage to safety. Absolutely stunning! (2:10).

Jan de Haan took as a starting point for Music for a Solemnity an old custom from the Dutch town of Hoogeveen, by which the faithful are called to church with drums. It was also inspired by the music of John Williams. This unusual combination has resulted in a solemn work in which old traditional methods are united with modern rhythms and melodic lines.

The Puckish Poltergeist, a programmatic work based on the pranks of a devious poltergeist, contrasts the terrifying and the comical. Through the use of rapid meter changes, simultaneous duple and triple rhythmic patterns, and contrasting textural scoring, the composer vividly conjures to mind frightened castle dwellers as they run from varied assortments of flying furniture and kitchen utensils, and the slightly bent puck, as he plays his little 'pranks.' Composed in the spring of 1991, The Pucking Poltergeist was premiered in Chicago at the 45th Mid-West International Band and Orchestra Clinic by the VanderCook College of Music Symphonic Band under the direction of Roger Rocco. It subsequently received a performance by the United States Military Band at West Point Acadamy. In February of 1993, it was featured as one of five works selected for the Symposium XVII for New Band Music at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.

Palustrus, for percussion ensemble and band, is based on two musical ideas. The first, a figure of two 16th notes, is introduced alluding to tiny seedlings as they sprout from the fertile earth. This figure quickly grows in frequency and density, then spreads into the second idea using a series of diatonic patterns. Palustrus is a medium-difficult, but attainable technical challenge in a diatonic setting. Splashes of dissonance in the winds support the active and exciting percussion ensemble statements throughout. Highly recommended for programs with a larger percussion section!
