Roope Mäenpää's Sonata for flute and piano (2020) was composed on a small island Utö in the Archipelago Sea (in the Baltic Sea). Isolated from his normal environment the composer didn't find so much peace or harmony as insecurity and introversion. These sensations of otherness, together with an intensive creative project, left a diary-like mark on the sonata. It is commissioned by and dedicated to Sami Junnonen and Tuomas Turriago.Roope Mäenpää (b. 1990) is a Finnish composer and musician based in Tampere. Mäenpää’s oeuvre includes orchestral and chamber music, and his works have been performed by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Tampere Philharmonic and the Lapland Chamber Orchestra. He has also worked in close collaboration with the TamperRaw contemporary music ensemble. Mäenpää has composed two musical fairytales for narrator and orchestra: Hipinäaasi apinahiisi (2019-20) and the Insect Symphony (2021), which he conducted in 2022 at the concert by the Tampere Philharmonic. The symphony is a valuable addition to children’s culture and an exciting work which sets out to explore nature through the miraculous world of little organisms.

André Jolivet (1905-1974) composed this Concerto for Flute and Strings in 1949. Initially written for Flute and String Orchestra, this version contains the scores for the Flute and the Piano and lasts 12 minutes. Thisstrong>Concerto for Flute and Strings is quite unusual as it was only created in two movements, each divided into a slow introduction and a fast main part. Used as one of the main pieces of the Geneva music contest _x001A_Concours deGenève_x001A_ in 2014, this concerto requires advanced skills. André Jolivet is a French composer who was really inspired by the Antiquity and had a strong interest for atonality. He also wrote many chamber music pieces, elevenconcertos, some orchestral and some vocal music.

SONATA CHO-CHO-SAN(Based on themes from Puccini’s Madama Butterfly)In the spirit of the great 19th-century opera fantasies for woodwinds, Michael Webster has created a concert trio on the many great arias from Puccini's Madama Butterfly. However, as its name implies, Sonata Cho-Cho-San is not the typical virtuosic operatic potpourri. Rather, it follows the plot, resembling a sonata mirroring Puccini's use of recurring and developing themes. Webster makes the most of the winds as versatile performers - equally suited to deliver Puccini's beautiful vocal writing, and to ornament and embroider the poignant themes in symphonic style. For advanced performers._______________________________________Text from the scanned back cover:Born in 1944, Michael Webster made his New York recital debutat Town Hall in 1968 with his eminent father, Beveridge Webster, as pianist. Compiled and edited by Amy Porter, Treasures for Flute and Piano is acollection of Philippe Gaubert’s shorter works for flute and piano. Gaubertwas a multi-talented musician, a marvelous flutist as well as a composer, teacher, and master conductor. Over his lifetime, he became one of the mostimportant musical figures in France between the World Wars in the first halfof the 20th century. Trained in theory and harmony at the Paris Conservatory,Gaubert was also deeply influenced by other composers at the time, includingDebussy, Fauré, and Dukas. Editor Amy Porter is a distinguished Professorat The University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, and hasbeen praised by critics for her exceptional musical talent and her passion forscholarship. This edition represents eleven of the sixteen works from AmyPorter and Dr. Penelope Fischer’s video study guide, “The Gaubert Cycle: TheComplete Works for Flute and Piano by Philippe Gaubertâ€.Philippe Gaubert (1879–1941) was a very important teacher and flutist in our classical flute playing lineage. In this edition we have gathered his beautiful, shorter compositions for flute and piano all in one place, to be cherished as “Gaubert’s Treasures.â€Philippe Gaubert personified the modern French school of flute playing as introduced by his teacher Paul Taffanel (1844–1908) at the Paris Conservatory. Gaubert was a multitalented musician, a marvelous flutist as well as a gifted composer, teacher and master conductor. Over his lifetime he became one of the most important musical figures in France between the World Wars in the first half of the twentieth century. Gaubert’s musical andpedagogical gifts to us are passed along through generations of students and continue to touch the hearts of many who listen to his fine, and refined, music.Philippe Gaubert studied composition at the Paris Conservatory with Raoul Pugno, Xavier Leroux, and then for a brief time with Charles Lenepvu. It was after this study that he won the famous Prix de Rome second prize in composition. Even with his schooling of theory and harmony in Paris, he was deeply influenced by other composers of the time, namely Debussy, Fauré and Dukas. Between the years of 1905–1914 Gaubert’s early workswere arrangements and short pieces written for the year-end final exam pieces at the Conservatory.Between 1914–1918 Gaubert served in the French Army during World War I, most notably in the battle of Verdun in 1916. This was considered one of the largest battles against the Germans in WWI. He was wounded but his creativity level was not dampened. He was rewarded for his service and awarded medals for his bravery. It was during this time that he found the energy to compose his Deux Esquisses or 2 Scenes, and sketched out his first flute sonata.Gaubert composed his remaining five flute and piano works after 1922 in Paris, and clearly his poetic soul was transformed from the earlier years. He took in new forms and styles of compositions such as a Suite, a Ballade and a Sonatine. He also completed his Second and Third Sonatas for Flute and Piano, all of them dramatic works in terms of compositional techniques and grandeur of tone.Gaubert composed music easily throughout his lifetime, especially during summer breaks when the orchestra and Paris Opera seasons were on hiatus and he was not conducting. He loved literature and poetry which inspired over thirty vocal works from 1903 through 1938.He also wrote twenty-six instrumental chamber works for other instruments: oboe, cornet, clarinet, trombone, violin, viola, cello, harp and combinations of these instruments with piano. Some of these were commissioned jury pieces, but many were for his musician friends.Six full-length stage works, both ballets and operas for the stage, several tone poems and symphonies were written throughout his lifetime. This edition represents eleven out of the sixteen works from our video study guide “The Gaubert Cycle: The Complete Works for Flute and Piano by Philippe Gaubert†with guest pianist Tim Carey. Omitted in this edition are Sonatas Nos. 1–3, Ballade, and Sonatine.

Known internationally for superior flute editions, Robert Stallman continues his considerable expansion of the flute repertoire with re-creations, or “new†works for flute by Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven, Chopin, Dvořák, and other great composers.Conceived originally as a work for solo piano, this arrangement of Dvořák’s Suite in A Major for flute and piano is based on both the piano and orchestra versions. It is one in a series of Stallman’s “new†works for flute. Dvořák composed the Suite in A Major in 1894, inspired by his happy and fruitful stay in the “New World†—a period that produced some of his greatest works, full of thematic freshness, raw energy and folk influences, both American and Old World Czech. The “New World†Symphony, Cello Concerto, “American†Quartet, String Quintet in E≤ Major, the Violin Sonatina and this A Major Suite are all cut from the same musical cloth—textured with his personal impressions of the Wild West’s fascinating Indian and Afro-American music, its God-fearing and friendly people, its vast open spaces and its awe-inspiring natural beauty.PrefaceConceived originally as a work for solo piano, the Suite in A Major was composed by Dvořák in 1894, during his famous two-year visit to the United States. He wrote the work in a mere ten days, and a year later made a full orchestration of it. The Suite was first performed in this second version in 1910 in Prague at the Rudolfinum. Dvořák, who died in 1904, never had a chance to hear a performance of this stirring orchestral realization. The Suite was inspired by the composer’s happy and fruitful stay in the “New Worldâ€, especially by his unforgettable summers spent in the quiet Czech-American village of Spillville, Iowa—a period that produced some of his greatest works, full of thematic freshness, raw energy and folk influences, both American and Old World Czech. The “New World†Symphony, Cello Concerto, “American†Quartet, String Quintet in Eb Major, the Violin Sonatina and this A Major Suite are all cut from the same musical cloth—textured with his personal impressions of the Wild West’s fascinating Indian and Afro-American music, its God-fearing and friendly people, its vast open spaces and its awe-inspiring natural beauty.Several of the Suite’s affecting melodies find echoes in these other, better known compositions of this American period. Wistful themes abound in all five movements, reflecting Dvořák’s transformative American experience as it found resonance in his own emotions. Contrasting with deeply felt, contemplative passages are Dvořák’s joyous and tempestuous expressions, which open the second, third and final movements. This arrangement for flute and piano is based on both the piano and orchestra versions. It is one in a series of my “new†works for flute by some of our greatest composers and I am delighted to add it to the collection. I predict that the A Major Suite will become a popular addition to our Romantic recital repertoire, much like the Dvořák Sonatina.—Robert StallmanMarblehead, Mass.June 1, 2018.

PRAYER for Flute and PianoAmanda Harberg's PRAYER is a rarity in the modern concert repertoire, beautiful romanticism built of a haunting aria for solo flute. Within the reach of younger players, the work was inspired as a prayer for the healing of a close family member. The acclaim for this work among musicians has led to the compose'’s versions for orchestra, for a variety of other solo instruments with piano, and as the slow movement of Harberg's Concerto for Viola and Orchestra.

Nico Samitz has been composing for chamber ensembles since his school days. For over ten years he has been writing works in a wide variety of genres for the “BlechReiz BrassQuintett†ensemble, in which he himself plays trumpet and piano. His field of expertise ranges from classical pieces to jazz and meditative music—and even to pop-oriented compositions. While honing his skills in ear-training and composition at the Mozarteum, Salzburg, Nico became acquainted with a wide repertoire of works as a trumpet player with the Munich Symphony Orchestra, The Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Bavarian State Opera, all of which have influenced his writing style. The driving force behind his creative work is a winning combination of passion, the fun of music-making and a desire to express, through the medium of music, feelings that are difficult to put into words. Like many of his works, Nico composedThe Joy of Freedom for the “BlechReiz BrassQuintetâ€. The catchy tune is reworked in a variety of styles throughout the entire work, giving it the quality of a true 'earworm'.

Inspired by a tour to Brazil with the Campbellsville Univeristy Chorale, Rio de Janeiro for Flute and Piano was written for Cristina Soares, a native of Rio de Janiero. The opening section in 7-beat phrases is meant to evoke the laid back attitude of the city with some bossa-nova style. An abrupt change in character leads to the more energetic side of the city, incorporating Latin rhythms, syncopation, and some blues inspired chromaticsim. There is a return to the original section, but this time in a minor mode and at a faster tempo, concluding with the lively energy that Rio de Janiero is known for. Seth Johnson (b.1989) is a composer, pianist, and cellist from Kentucky. He holds a Bachelor's of Arts in Music Theory/Composition and a Master's Degree in Music from Campbellsville University, where he served as composer-in-residence, principal cellist for the University Orchestra, and accompanist for the University Chorale. His works include numerous pieces for orchestra including Superhero Symphony, various solo/chamber pieces, as well as scores for the award winning Kentucky Education Television series My Kentucky Home.Solo Part Included: Flute.

Gary Schocker’s THREE DANCES FOR TWO FLUTES has long been a staple of the flute repertoire – in its original voicing with piano, as well as in transcriptions with string orchestra or band accompaniment, for alto saxophone duo with piano, and even in the composer’s flute quartet version of the famous Coffee Nerves movement. Joseph Schubert, born in Warnsdorf (Bohemia) in 1757, is related neither to his famous namesake, Franz Schubert, nor to the well-known musical family of Dresden (Davis, Franz Anton, Franz and Georgine Schubert). He received his first musical instruction from his father, a curator by profession. Then, after moving to Prague and Berlin, he developed his knowledge of violin and viola playing, as well as of composition. In 1779 he entered the service of the Markgraf of Schwerin as a viola player. He lived in Dresden from 1788, where he died on 28 July 1837, at the age of 80. In Gerber's volume Historisch-biographisches Laxicon der Tonkunstler (Leipzig 1790/92) his work in highly esteemed. Among his most important works are four operas, masses, piano works, chamber music and concertos. Gerber knew of over forty-nine concertos. The great talent of Cecile Chaminade (1857-1944) showed very early: At the age of 12, she published her first composition. Georges Bizet, a friend of the family, predicted her great future. After her successful debut as a pianist in Paris in 1877, she began busy concert activities as a solo pianist, chamber musician and conductor in many European countries as well as in the USA and Canada.Although many of her compositions became bestsellers during her lifetime, they are almost all missing in the concert programmes of today. Only the Concertino for flute and orchestra Op. 107 is still performed regularly. The demanding piece was written in 1902 as a competition piece at the Paris Conservatoire - initially still with piano accompaniment. The orchestral version was composed by Chaminade two years later. The piece begins with a wide melody and then turns into a virtuoso solo section which is followed by a cadenza. The piece ends with the initial theme as recapitulation and a coda.

“Charles-Marie Widor (1844-1937) was a great organist who did not only focus on Organ composition. From orchestra pieces to chamber music, he wrote various different compositions, including Suite for Flute and Piano, Op. 34 which was composed for Paul Taffanel. This suite, a subtle mix of Romanticism and Classicism, particularly stands out for its nuances and is composed of four movements: - Moderato - Scherzo - Romance - Final Charles-Marie Widor also composed 10 symphonies for Organ, some Operas, and some Piano Concerti.â€.
