“AL 30 757 ' French Music for Mixed Choir Those who love choral singing often lament not knowing how to go about finding, among the heaps of scores written for multiple singers, the rare gem whose discovery would intensify the enjoyment of singing together. What unknown treasure might bring a programme the touch of originality that makes it stand out? As the fruit of long and hard research on the subject, this anthology of French pieces for choir is one we hope will go down in history. The first section is made up of original works written for choral ensemble: Gabriel Fauré's Op. 35 Madrigal exhales a melancholy sensuality that is shared to some degree by Reynaldo Hahn's Rondels ' and within this Renaissance pastiche lies a real masterpiece, 'Gardez le trait de la fenêtre'. Le Ballet des ombres, written by a young Berlioz, drinks from the whimsical source of Romanticism (Herder). The second section assembles choral transcriptions of melodies ' such as Beau soir by Debussy and Deux Prières by Milhaud ' along with excellent arrangements like 'Choral inappétissant' extracted from Satie's piano in Sports et divertissements. A treasure trove of pure delight.&rdquo.

Peter Benoit was born at Harlebeke on 17 August 1834 and died in Antwerp on 8 March 1901. He was, without doubt, the most important Flemish composer of the nineteenth century, responsible for the foundation of a Flemish national school of music. He studied at the Brussels Conservatory, where his teachers included Fétis, and won the Grote Rome Prize, the highest musical distinction in Belgium. He made use of the money from the prize for a study tour through Germany and Bohemia and afterwards settled in Paris where, in 1862, he became conductor of the Buffes-Parisiens. The following year he returned to Brussels and achieved phenomenal success with his Quadrilogie religieuse for choir and orchestra and with the oratorio of 1866, Lucifer. From then onwards he laid aside instrumental music and concentrated almost exclusively on vocal and choral music with Flemish texts. In 1867 he settled in Antwerp, where he was appointed director of the local music school, which under his leadership became the Royal Flemish Music Conservatory. In addition to his activity as a composer, he proved himself to be a remarkable educator, conductor and music administrator.

Famous sea shanty Haul Away Joe, here arranged for solo piano by talented 20th Century British composer John Longmire.Longmire was born in Gainsborough in 1902 and the publication success of his innovative 'Nine Insect Pieces' in 1924 led to him writing over 50 volumes of music for the piano, many of which remain in print with Forsyth Publishing today. A long-time friend and biographer of John Ireland, they lived together in Guernsey while Ireland wrote some of his finest works and only narrowly escaped the German invasion of 1940, escaping on an overcrowded ferry pursued by a submarine. After returning to the island post-war, Longmire composed the 'Song of Guernsey' for Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh visit in 1949. Later in 1957, when Elizabeth visited again as Queen, he conducted his 'Song of Welcome' sung by 6600 children in St Peter Port. In 1950 he married and emigrated to New Zealand where he was Music Master at Northcote College, Auckland, conductor of the Royal Auckland Choir and a broadcaster hosting weekly talks on music on NZBC. Returning to Guernsey, he became an examiner for Trinity College of Music, also writing 100 pieces for the exam syllabus and adjudicating for Trinity and the ABRSM internationally.

The first movement has a dreamy and dramatic impressionistic quality, whereas the second movement is deeply melancholy and religious sounding. The third movement is playful with pulsating rhythms, which demonstrate a symphonic jazz feel. In 1963, at the age of thirty, Lane quickly formed up a close friendship with Paul Van Ness through their involvement with the Ridgewood Orpheus Glee Club (NJ), an all-male choir for which Lane was appointed accompanist. Lane maintained the accompanist position for this group for forty-one years until his death in 2004. Lane dedicated his Sonata 2 to Van Ness as a high school graduation present in 1965. During this period Lane also composed a piano suite for four hands, and a fantasy for piano and orchestra, along with other solo instrumental, choral and orchestral works. Van Ness performed the world premiere of Piano Sonata 2 at his Senior Recital in 1969, five years after its conception, at the Eastman School of Music, Lane’s alma mater. Karl Tricomi, another student of Lane’s and also graduate of the Eastman School of Music performed this second Sonata in 1976 at Carnegie Hall (NY) as well.

With his musical setting Nachtlicher Himmel based on words from a letter by Vincent van Gogh, Rolf Rudin ventures into downright impressionist terrain. Just as the famous painter creates literary images with his letters and knows how to visualize landscapes and frames of mind, the award-winning composer knows how to musically capture such moods and atmospheres. His composition for two- to four-part women's choir (SSAA) and piano lives on dynamic nuances, changes of time, chromaticism and triplet figures as well as harp-like arpeggios which give the work a mystical quality. Due to its chord progressions with great chromaticism, the choral part of this c. 4-minute work contains some intonational obstacles which are worth negotiating while holding out the prospect of a unique sound experience.

The Sonata op. 12 is the largest of Sibeliuss piano works. Sibelius may have composed it in the summer of 1893. The second movement comes from a work originally planned for male choir to a text from the Finnisch national epic Kalevala. Something of its character my still have shaped the final outcome, with its restless opening bars, sparkling writing in the pianos high register, the calming homophonic passages, and soothing arpeggio writing. The first public performance took place on April 17, 1895, in the Solennity Hall of Helsinki University. The first edition was published by Breitkopf & Hartel in 1906. Over and beyond the excellent music text, this volumes contains an extensive preface by Sibelius expert Kari Kilpelainen.

Lauri Mäntysaari explores the theme nature in Chats before Sunrise (2007, rev. 2022). The atmosphere created in this composition is one of early dawn after a long night spent with good friends (and wine, perhaps), a moment where an unseen element lighter than the air seems to hold the still bubbling conversation in its arms and let us feel relieved. Not only does the word chat mean a light conversation, but also a family of birds which is particularly known for their habit of making clicking sounds. These chats also find their place in the composition.Duration: c. 6'Lauri Mäntysaari (b. 1982 Helsinki) is known for his wide variety of composing for different media. His output consists of orchestral works, music for instrumental ensemble, solo works, songs and choir music. His works have been performed widely in Finland, but also in eg. Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Austria and Canada. Mäntysaari's works have recently gained success in international competitions in Italy and The Netherlands.
