The present edition contains Twelve Sonatas for Violin Solo and Basso Continuo, Op. 5 by Arcangelo Corelli. The first part of the series (Z. 12050: Sonatas No. 1-3, Z. 12051: Sonatas Nos. 4-6) comprises church sonatas (sonate da chiesa), while the second one (Z. 12265: Sonatas Nos. 7-12) chamber sonatas (sonate da camera). The present edition is based on the first edition of the work published in Rome in 1700.

Der vorliegende Band enthält die zwölf Sonaten für Solo-Violine mit Basso continuo, Op. 5 von Arcangelo Corelli. Die erste Teil (Z. 12050: Sonaten 1-3, Z. 12051: Sonaten 4-6) umfasst die Kirchensonaten (sonate da chiesa), der zweite Teil (Z. 12265: Sonaten 7-12) die Kammersonaten (sonata da camera). Die vorliegende Ausgabe stützt sich auf die 1700 in Rom erschienene Erstausgabe des Werkes.

Duo-Sonata for violin and piano was written between September and October of 2010. It is made up of three movements, each of which has unique characteristics. The first, Allegro appassionato, is monothematic, although the theme itself is presented in several ways. Following a vigorous start featuring violin cadenza, the movement is developed with a lively feel, alternating lyrical fragments with other energetic ones. Its conclusion is resounding.

Meanwhile, the second movement, Quasi un lamento, is introspective and fragile. A long melody is sustained by a delicate and transparent piano accompaniment, evoking once again the theme of the first movement and concluding with a Lento of descending piano harmonies while the violin follows, in octaves, with heartfelt glissando.

The third movement, Scherzando-Allegro, is a light-hearted game between the piano and the violin. The main theme is repeated once again, this time with a binary time signature. The violin uses ricochet (the rebounding of notes in a bow stroke), as well as natural and artificial harmonies in quick time. The piano part unfolds completely naturally, excluding any gratuitous artifice.

Yrjö Kilpinen (1892-1959) is most known for his hundreds of lieds and song cycles. His instrumental compositions have been less know, ie. the six piano sonatas and suite for gamba and piano. Large-scale Sonata for violin and piano is dated in 1935 with opus number 87. The work was never finished, and National Library in Helsinki holds several sketches and versions in its Kilpinen collection.

In 2015 violinist Frida Backman commissioned a completion of the Sonata from composer Walter Wolff. Wolff worked on the sketches and versions until 2018, when the work was completed and the Sonata premiered.

The present publication is the first publication of the Sonata. It sheds light to Kilpinen as an instrumental composer.

Yrjö Kilpinen (1892-1959) tunnetaan lähinnä lied-sävellyksistään, joita aktiivisina sävellysvuosina syntyikin satoja. Vähemmälle huomiolle ovat jääneet hänen instrumentaalisävellyksensä, mm. kuusi pianosonaattia, sellosonaatti, sarja gamballe ja pianolle sekä muutamat pikkukappaleet.

Vuodelle 1935 päivätty neliosainen, laajamuotoinen sonaatti viululle ja pianolle (op. 87) jäi keskeneräiseksi. Suomen Kansalliskirjaston Kilpinen-kokoelmassa oli useita luonnoksia ja eri versioita. Sonaatin osista neljäs oli keskeneräisin.

Viulutaiteilija Frida Backman tilasi konserttiaan varten sonaatin täydennöksen säveltäjä Walter Wolffilta. Hän sai työnsä päätöksen 2018, jonka jälkeen sonaatti kantaesitettiin.

Fennica Gehrmanin julkaisu on sonaatin ensipainos, ja siten laajentaa kuvaamme Yrjö Kilpisestä instrumenttiteosten säveltäjänä.

This edition presents one of the most important chamber works for violin: the Sonata No. 5 for Piano and Violin (“Spring”, Op. 24) in F major by Ludwig van Beethoven. It allows you to work through the piece systematically and at different tempi with accompaniment.
The recordings begin with the concert version of each piece, following which you will hear the piano accompaniment at slow and medium tempo to help you practise. Having mastered these slower versions, you’ll now be ready to play with piano accompaniment at the original tempo. All of the versions were recorded live.

Chaque playback fait d’abord entendre la version de concert d’un morceau (fl te et piano). Mais vous y trouverez également un accompagnement de piano pour travailler un tempo lent puis un autre un tempo intermédiaire. Une fois un morceau maîtrisé, vous pourrez le jouer au tempo d’origine avec l’accompagnement de piano. Toutes les versions ont été enregistrées en live.
