Jukka-Pekka Lehto is a contemporary composer and flutist. He started his career in the Finnish marine-band and played afterwards in the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra. Currently he is principal flutist in the Pori Sinfonietta. His compositions are neo-classicist with contemporary influences, many of which have been awarded prizes at international composition competitions. His works include music for wind band, chamber music, choir and various instrumental combinations.

Traveller’s Joy — Two Walking Tunes for Oboe and Piano was composed in 1956. This is the first time the piece has been published.

Mary Chandler was born in Kent in 1911. She studied music privately, and her teachers included Harry Farjeon (composition), Margaret Eliot and Leon Goossens (oboe) and Harold Craxton (piano). She read English at Oxford University and taught in London schools before joining the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra as principal oboist. She appeared with the CBSO as soloist (oboe and piano) and composer and gave broadcasts and recitals in the Midlands. Later, as a free-lance orchestral player, she formed the Mercian Trio (flute, oboe and piano) which gave concerts around the country.

In 1960 Mary became Area Director of the Kent Music School, in charge of its wind teaching and of the varied activities of its Tonbridge Music Centre. She conducted many student groups and composed and arranged music for them until she retired in 1971. She continued to be actively involved in music thereafter, examining, composing and organising concerts. She spent her later years in Gloucestershire and died in 1996.

Dr. Kristin Leitterman is currently the Assistant Professor of Oboe at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Arkansas, USA, where she teaches oboe and bassoon, Double Reed Techniques, and coaches small chamber ensembles. She is also the Director of the Lucarelli Oboe Master Class, a week-long immersive oboe master class founded by Bert Lucarelli in 1996. As a guest artist she has presented master classes at many institutions, including the Manhattan School of Music, New York University, and the Hartt School.

As a researcher, Kirstin has interests in the life and works of Mary Chandler. She has presented her research at The Juilliard School, Music by Women Festival, the International Double Reed Society conferences, and the Brazilian Double Reed Society’s conference in João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil.

Hard Boiled Variations by Arnulf Herrmann is a 41-minute work for ensemble and dance. Two aspects are at the centre of it: on the one hand, the piece addresses different facets of acceleration or the different ways of creating the impression of acceleration, and on the other hand, the play of proximity and distance or sharpness and blurriness. The reference to visual perception and the visual arts is quite intentional---comparable to the gradual receding from a canvas, the details fade with increasing distance (or acceleration) and the overriding contours come to the fore until finally only the overall impression of the picture remains recognisable.

The piece was premiered on 6 May 2022 at the Wittener Tage für Neue Kammermusik by Ensemble Modern and CocoonDance under the direction of Elena Schwarz.

On the 2nd March 1714 Bach, who until then had been employed as a chamber musician and organist at he Court of Duke Wilhelm Ernst in Weimar, was promoted to the position of concert master, and was instructed to relieve the ailing Kapellmeister Johann Samuel Drese by composing and performing new pieces monthly for the church. Following the cantata Himmelskonig, sei willkommen, BWV 182, the present cantate was the second work which Bach composed under the terms of his new contract. The extraordinary musical ambition evident in the first Weimar cantatas may have had its roots in the fact htat Bach aspired to become Drese's successor as Court Kapellmeister.
