Origins of the Tarantella The tarantella is a popular southern Italian dance with origins in the 11th century. (There is even some mention of the tarantella in ancient Greek mythology.) Of the possible sources of the dance, the most popular comes from the villages of Tanto and Tarentum (little spider), Italy. During harvest, workers in the field were sometimes bitten by the tarantula spider. To combat the poison, the afflicted workers went into a frenetic, almost musical exorcism to sweat the venom out of their pores. In the millennium since, the very energetic nature of the dance has remained, although the curative focus of the dance has given way to more enjoyable endeavors, even stately courtship. (Confinement, or debtor's prison, was common during this period if one's debts could not be paid.) During his confinement, he worked on two of his most famous works, Jubilate Agno and A Song of David. (Part of Jubilate Agno [Rejoice in the Lamb] was set to music by English composer, Benjamin Britten.) Smart's writing style (which, at times, bordered on the absurd), along with his many obsessions, lead to frequent misperceptions of his work and his lucidity. In this present work, portions of Smart's Jubilate Agno were used in mm. 24-31, 103-110 and 149-156. The remaining text was gathered by the composer, including the rapid, almost patter-like, delivery of words from A-Z in the alphabet. (Christopher Smart had a preoccupation with the alphabet.) He has served as Professor of Music at three universities (an Endowed Professor at two), conducted 47 all-state choirs, and directed over 40 times at Carnegie Hall, among other American venues. Randall guest conducts full-time, and composes from his home studios on Merritt Island, Florida and in Sandia Park, New Mexico. Performance Notes Text: In Latin, the r is flipped; use s instead of z on endings such as phosa, cosa, and so on; the Latin o is a cross between oh and aw; in the transliteration above, I chose to simply use an o for consistency. The director will blend the oh and aw in the rehearsals to his/her own preference. Lastly, tarantula is pronounced tah-rah-n-too-lah (avoid teh-ran-choo-luh) within the confines of this text. Stomp: This can be done by the entire chorus, or just the first row. It is as much visual as it is auditory. The string quartet is preferred over piano when that option affords itself. The Ode was admirably set by Mr. Henry Purcell, and performed twice with universal applause.

The popularity of Purcell's setting is apparent from the many sources that survive and from the printed extracts which appeared almost immediately after its first performance. The primary source for this edition is the largely autograph manuscript in the Bodleian Library. Rather to reduce the orthography to a norm, the capitalization of the vocal text favours Purcell's preferences.

Biografisch ist das Agnus Dei eine Art kleines Requiem fur seinen kurz zuvor verstorbenen Vater. Das liturgische Agnus Dei rahmt den deutschen Text Eh das Madchen entschlief ... der bei Auffuhrungen in anderen Landern durch eine Ubersetzung ersetzt werden soll.

Der SWR-Redakteur Hans-Peter Jahn schreibt dazu im Programmheft: Die fur Smolka typischen minimalistischen Taktzellen schaffen eine archaische Sinnlichkeit. Eine einfache und zugleich streng gebaute Vokalmusik mit Tiefenwirkung.

Nach der Urauffuhrung war die Esslinger Zeitung hellauf begeistert: Smolka ist ein Meister der Stimmbehandlung und der chorischen Klanggestaltung. Im Zentrum des Stucks gerat die Musik zum Stillstand: im leisen gleichmassigen Summen uber dem plotzlich fortissimo ein tschechisches Kinderlied erklingt eines das der Vater seinen Kindern haufig vorgesungen hat. Das alles war sehr beruhrend. Und eigentlich noch mehr als das. My father PhDr. Jaroslav Smolka (1933-2011) was a leading Czech musicologist author of books Czech Cantata and Oratorium Fuga in Czech Music Smetana's Orchestra Music Smetana's Vocal Music monography of Jan Dismas Zelenka and many others. He was a legendary teacher of Music History at Prague Music Academy critic recording producer composer; for almost 50 years he was an important and highly respected personality of Prague musical life.
My father devoted a lot of time and energy to musical education and activities of my sister and me using often quite original methods such as teaching of intervals and counterpoint through Bartok's Microcosmos ear training filling all imaginable moments of everyday life or lessons of harmony analysis starting with Overture to Tristan and Musorgsky's Catacombs. The Martinu song Wondering Maiden was his solo number in our home vocal productions which he used to sing with amazing devotion while his huge voice was audible in several neighboring streets.
My Agnus Dei is closely bound to all this history e.g. by using canon and preferring beauty of dissonant seconds like Bartok or quoting Martinu and his refined neoclassical harmony. Father would be probably a bit critical about the minimalistic monotony of the main body of the piece. Nevertheless firstly he would improvise a short lecture of history of Agnus Dei in Requiem in Czech Music naming by heart many dates and all examples of changes of order of the traditional text by composers. Examples would be sung probably.

Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa in 1451. His father was a wool merchant. Originally he seemed destined to follow in his father’s footsteps, and thus sailed the oceans to countries as far apart as Iceland and Guinea.
In 1476 his ship was sunk during a battle off the coast of Portugal. Columbus saved his own life by swimming to shore.
In 1484 he conceived the idea of sailing to the Indies via a westward sea route, but it was only in 1492 that he was able to realize this plan.
On this first voyage he was in command of three ships: the flag-ship, called the Santa Maria, the Pinta, and the Ni?a. From Spain Columbus sailed via the Canary Islands to the Bahamas, whichhe sighted on October 12th 1492.
Without being aware of it Columbus discovered the ‘New World’ he thought he had landed in the eastern part of Asia. The motif from Dvoøák’s 9th Symphony ‘Aus der neuen Welt’ forms a little counterfeit history at this point in the composition.
After this first voyage Columbus was to undertake another three long voyages to America. These voyages were certainly not entirely devoid of misfortune.
More than once he was faced with shipwreck, mutiny and the destruction of settlements he had founded.
After Columbus had left for Spain from Rio Belen in 1503, he beached his ships on the coast of Jamaica. The crew were marooned there and it was only after a year that Columbus succeeded in saving his men and sailing back to Spain with them.
In the music the misunderstanding about which continent Columbus discovered in his lifetime resounds, for does this part in the composition not contain Asiatic motifs?
Poor Columbus! In 1506 the famous explorer died in Valladolid.

Christopher Columbus wordt in 1451 geboren in Genua als zoon van een wolhandelaar. Aanvankelijk lijkt hij voorbestemd om als koopman door het leven te gaan. Zo bevaart hij al een groot deel van de wereldzeeën tot landen als IJslanden Guinea.
In 1476 zinkt zijn schip in een veldslag voor de kust van Portugal. Columbus kan zich zwemmend naar de kust redden.
In 1484 vat hij het plan op om langs de “andere” kant van de wereld naar India te varen. Pasin 1492 kan hij zijn plan verwezenlijken.
Het vlaggeschip op deze reis is de Santa Maria. Het schip wordt gesecondeerd door de Pinta en de Ni?a.
Vanuit Spanje vaart Columbus via de Canarische eilanden naar de Bahamas,die hij op 12 oktober 1492 in zicht krijgt. Zonder het te weten ontdekt Columbus de “Nieuwe wereld”.

Paseen jaar later weet Columbus zijn bemanning te redden en met hen terug te varen naar Spanje.
In de muziek klinkt het misverstand over welk werelddeel Columbus in zijn leven bevaren had door. Roept dit deeltje geen associatiesop met Aziatische klanken? Arme Columbus!

Jan de Haan schreef Hispaniola ter gelegenheid van het vijfhonderdste sterfjaar van Christoffel Columbus (1451-1506), die in 1492 Amerika ontdekte. Een van de eerste eilanden die hij aantrof in de Caribische zee noemde hijLa Española - in het Latijn ‘Hispaniola’. Het werk bestaat uit drie aaneengesloten delen. In deel een wordt de voorbereiding van de reis weerspiegeld, steeds afgewisseld door een ontspannen Spaanse sfeer. Het snelle tweede deel beschrijftmet vele ritmische verrassingen de onvoorspelbare zeereis. Als de scheepsbel heeft geklonken, begint het derde deel. Tijdens het breed uitgesponnen thema lijkt de kust uit zee te rijzen, waarna de euforie vanwege de ontdekkingvan het nieuwe land uitmondt in een muzikale climax.

Jan de Haan a composé Hispaniola pour célébrer le 500e anniversaire de la mort de Christophe Colomb (1451-1506). Né en Italie, le jeune Christophe Colomb s’installa Lisbonne. De l , il entreprit ses voyages découverte vers l’Afrique et ailleurs. Adhérent la thèse que la Terre est ronde, il décida de rejoindre l’Asie (Les Indes orientales) en navigant par l’Ouest. En 1492, il embarqua avec une petite flotte battant pavillon espagnol. Après deux mois de navigation, il découvrit les premières îles dans la mer des Cara bes. Persuadé d'avoir atteint l'Asie, Colomb baptisa ces nouvelles terres « Les Indes » et les hommes qui les peuplent « les Indiens ». Étonné par laressemblance de certains paysages avec l'Espagne, il donna le nom d'Española (Petite Espagne) l’une des îles (aujourd’hui Ha ti et la République dominicaine). Ce nom fut ensuite latinisé en Hispaniola.Hispaniola est une œuvre en trois mouvements sans interruption. Le premier mouvement illustre la préparation du voyage. La précision qui caractérise la musique alterne de manière répétitive avec la décontraction d’une atmosphère typiquement espagnole. Le deuxième mouvement d’allure vive est rempli de surprises rythmiques. Nous suivons Colomb dans son long, imprévisible et dangereux périple en mer. Terre en vue !, la cloche du bateau s’ébranle. Nous entrons dans le troisième mouvement. Durant la longue exposition du thème, les côtes semblent s’élever lentement de la mer. Puis vient l’euphorie de la découverte de la nouvelle terre. Finalement, la musique rayonne dans une intensité lumineuse.
