Compelled by the force of dreams, Martin has created a series of twelve flute trios, each a single movement of four to five minutes in length. These trios correlate roughly to a calendar year, although the composer has assigned them titles from a personal myth. They can, of course, be played in any order or grouping. The twelve trios were completed during a trip to northwestern Michigan in the Summer of 2014.

Via Crucis is one of the most outstanding religious masterpieces from Liszt-s late creative period, and it depicts the story of the fourteen stations of Jesus' suffering. The work was not released during the composer-s lifetime due to its unusual and daring new sonorities. Based on his own dating, Liszt completed the composing process on February 26, 1879 in Budapest. The piece was originally written as fifteen short movements for solo vocalists, choir, and organ or harmonium, and its text was compiled by Liszt's partner, Carolyne von Sayn-Wittgenstein, using biblical excerpts, two medieval Latin hymns and two German Lutheran chorales. This volume, edited by Imre Mezo, contains German, English and Hungarian prefaces, as well as critical notes in English, which reveal valuable details about the history of the work.

Johannes Brahms's Alto Rhapsody is published here in a new Urtext edition, modernised for present-day performance practice. It is based on the 2nd impression of the first printed edition, as this is regarded as the authentic musical text following the last revisions made by the composer. The musical setting of Goethe's poem Harzreise im Winter opens with a somber beginning, then by turning to divine powers, it arrives at a hopeful new level. The work - which was composed in connection with the marriage of Julie, the daughter of Brahms's revered Clara Schumann, in 1869 - impresses above all with its personal touch as well as its pioneering progressive harmonies and enormous compositional power, which still entice listeners into the concert hall. Ralph Vaughan Williams' Heroic Elegy and Triumphal Epilogue was composed in 1901. The Elegy dates from January and the Epilogue towards the end of the year, in early November. After some revision by the composer, both movements were performed by the Leeds Municipal Orchestra, conducted by Vaughan Williams, on the 21st January 1905 and this appears to have been the last performance of the work in the UK. The manuscript surfaced in the US in 1966 and is now in the Beinecke Library of Yale University.

The four composer-sons of Johann Sebastian Bach were figures of decisive importance in the transitional period between the Baroque and Viennese classicism. Around the middle of the 18th century they were influential not only as composers but also as virtuoso players of keyboard instruments in promoting the enormous change in style that took place during those decades. This volume offers a selection of the genres typical of the keyboard works by Bach's sons, thereby also giving students an excellent introduction to Viennese classicism and to the works of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven.

George Frideric Handel is considered England's first and foremost composer of oratorios. Above all, the Messiah is regarded as the epitome of sacred music and in German-speaking countries it is also one of the most often performed works in the genre. The version of the Messiah which is most often performed today is a combination of various versions. Consequently, the present critical edition by Ton Koopman contains all the surviving alternative versions of the solo movements. A concordance makes it possible to assign these movements to those various performances of the work conducted by Handel between the Dublin premiere in 1742 and the London concerts which took place up to 1759. In accordance with the wishes voiced by many choral conductors and singers, the vocal score is available in separate English and German versions. Score available separately - see item CA.5505600.

The Lied genre had a decisive influence on Richard Strauss' musical oeuvre: his first and last published works were songs, and few other composers have enjoyed such success with their song settings as Strauss. The Croatian pianist and composer Dejan Lazic has now arranged several of these musical miniatures for violin and piano with virtuosity.

Danish composer John Høybye enjoys great acclaim at home and abroad, not just for his music but also for his work as a (choral) conductor and arranger.Presenting a medium level of difficulty, Hope. Easter Music is suitable for a good amateur choir. The mix of a beautiful choral sound and rhythmic intensity in jazz-inspired phrases is “trademark Høybyeâ€. Primarily written for four voices (SATB), the choral writing subdivides at certain, particularly expressive passages to create six- or eight-part harmonies. In addition, the male voices are challenged by several excellently scored four-part passages (TTBB without female voices). The short male voice solo can be sung instead by the choir if necessary. The instrumental quartet is given ample scope for improvisation. While each of the eight movements has its own unique character, the work forms a cohesive whole. Based on a text by Edward Broadbridge, the movements are linked by the theme of “hope†as well as by recurring musical motifs and themes. This not only makes the piece easier to rehearse, but also ensures its popularity with audiences.

August Louis Baeyens received his musical training at the Royal Flemish Music Conservatory in Antwerp, studying solfège, viola, and harmony. As a composer, Baeyens developed chiefly through the study of composers such as Debussy, Wagner and Strauss; this interest gave him the reputation of a revolutionary within the confines of the very traditionalist conservatory. It makes sense that the first concerto he wrote for a solo instrument was his Concerto for Viola (Concerto voor altviool) in 1956. A recipient of the first prize award for viola while in conservatory, he performed as a violist in orchestras throughout Flanders. The concerto is in three movements: Moderato, Larghetto espressivo, and Allegro.

It s quite rare when a composer s diploma work becomes a successful, popular piece even after 70 years. Frigyes Hidas (1928 2007) Oboe Concerto, written in 1951, is a work that Péter Pongrácz, Lajos Lencsés, and many other Hungarian and foreign oboists gladly add to their concert programs. It is difficult to pinpoint exactly what stylistic conventions helped to form the musical language of the Oboe Concerto: the three-movement form is suggestive of Viennese Classicism, and Hungarian motifs of the era can also be detected here and there. However, the main influences can be felt from the Neoclassicism of the 1920s and 1930s, the Baroque era, and the French woodwind school. Aswith all of his musical creations, Hidas demonstrates here that he is a master of instrumental knowledge, consideration towards his works performers, and tasteful moderation. This publication is printed on high-quality, age-resistant, pale-yellow paper that is produced in an environmentally-friendly, climate-neutral manner using renewable raw materials.

Besides Ernst Krenek and the Czech composer, Alois Haba, Felix Petyrek (1892-1951) was one the most important pupils who studied under Franz Schreker in the latter's early composition classes in Vienna. In his Missa phrygica, written in 1949 for four to eight voices (it can be performed by a choir with soloists/small choir), Petyrek employs elements of vocal polyphony from the Renaissance and early Baroque in a very personal, modern contrapuntal fashion. However, the brightness of the splendid sonority in both the Gloria and Credo, obtained essentially through the use of chains of parallel fifths, shows the influence of his teacher, Franz Schreker. My third quartet is laid out in a three-movement structure, with each movement based on an early, middle, and late work of the great American impressionist painter Mary Cassatt. Although the movements are separate, with full-stop endings, the music is connected by a common scale-form, derived from the name MARY CASSATT, and by a recurring theme that introduces all three movements. I see this theme as Mary's Theme, a personality that stays intact while undergoing gradual change. I The Bacchante (1876) [Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania] The painting shows a young girl of Italian or Spanish origin, playing a small pair of cymbals. Since Cassatt was trying very hard to fit in at the French Academy at the time, she painted a lot of these subjects, which were considered typical and universal. The style of the painting doesn't yet show Cassatt's originality, except perhaps for certain details in the face. Accordingly the music for this movement is Spanish/Italian, in a similar period-style but using the musical signature described above. The music begins with Mary's Theme, ruminative and slow, then abruptly changes to an alla Spagnola-type fast 3/4 - 6/8 meter. It evokes the Spanish-influenced music of Ravel and Falla. Midway through, there's an accompanied recitative for the viola, which figures large in this particular movement, then back to a truncated recapitulation of the fast music. The overall feeling is of a well-made, rather conventional movement in a contemporary Spanish/Italian style. Cassatt's painting, too, is rather conventional. II At the Opera (1880) [Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts] This painting is one of Cassatt's most well known works, and it hangs in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The painting shows a woman alone in a box at the opera house, completely dressed (including gloves) and looking through opera glasses at someone or something that is NOT on the stage. Across the auditorium from her, but exactly at eye level, is a gentleman with opera glasses intently watching her - though it is not him that she's looking at. It's an intriguing picture. This movement is far less conventional than the first movement, as the painting is far less conventional. The music begins with a rapid, Shostakovich-type mini-overture lasting less than a minute, based on Mary's Theme. My conjecture is that the woman in the painting has arrived late to the opera, busily stumbling into her box. What happens next is a kind of collage, a kind of surrealistic overlaying of two different elements: the foreground music, at first is a direct quotation of Soldier's Chorus from Gounod's FAUST (an opera Cassatt would certainly have heard in the brand-new Paris Opera House at that time), played by Violin II, Viola, and Cello. This music is played sul ponticello in the melody and col legno in the marching accompaniment. On top of this, the first violin hovers at first on a high harmonic, then descends into a slow melody, completely separate from the Gounod. It's as if the woman in the painting is hearing the opera onstage but is not really interested in it. Then the cello joins the first violin in a kind of love-duet (just the two of them, at first). This music isn't at all Gounod-derived; it's entirely from the same scale patterns as the first movement and derives from Mary's Theme and its scale. The music stays in a kind of dichotomy feeling, usually three-against-one, until the end of the movement, when another Gounod melody, Valentin's aria Avant de quitter ce lieux reappears in a kind of coda for all four players. It ends atmospherically and emotionally disconnected, however. The overall feeling is a kind of schizophrenic, opera-inspired dream. III Young Woman in Green, Outdoors in the Sun (1909) [Worcester Art Museum, Massachusetts] The painting, one of Cassatt's last, is very simple: just a figure, looking sideways out of the picture. The colors are pastel and yet bold - and the woman is likewise very self-assured and not in the least demure. It is eight minutes long, and is all about melody - three melodies, to be exact (Young Woman, Green, and Sunlight). No angst, no choppy rhythms, just ever-unfolding melody and lush harmonies. I quote one other French composer here, too: Debussy's song Green, from Ariettes Oubliees. 1909 would have been Debussy's heyday in Paris, and it makes perfect sense musically as well as visually to do this. Mary Cassatt lived her last several years in near-total blindness, and as she lost visual acuity, her work became less sharply defined - something akin to late water lilies of Monet, who suffered similar vision loss. My idea of making this movement entirely melodic was compounded by having each of the three melodies appear twice, once in a pure form, and the second time in a more diffuse setting. This makes an interesting two ways form: A-B-C-A1-B1-C1. String Quartet No.3 (Cassatt) is dedicated, with great affection and respect, to the Cassatt String Quartet, whose members have dedicated themselves in large measure to the furthering of the contemporary repertoire for quartet.

Squish! is a love story, King Kong’s lovestory. This is the American Sign Language (ASL) version which has something of a twist at the end.
Squish! was written as Composer-in-Residence with Cuatro Puntos and was commissioned withfundsfrom the Connecticut Office of the Arts. Michael Haydn composed three of his masses in honor of the holy archangels - St Michael, St Gabriel, and the Raphaelismesse in honor of St Raphael now published. By avoiding the use of vocal soloists, it is one of the genre of Missa in pieno. Four trumpets and two ad lib oboe parts added later by the composer give the work a festive sound in the baroque tradition. At the same time, elements of the 'sensitive style' feature too. The Gloria and Credo exist in two settings, a short version with polytextual passages and a longer version arranged by Haydn himself. The Carus edition, based on authentic performance material in St. Peter's Monastery in Salzburg, contains both versions, with the longer version published here for the first time. The richly varied concert piece shows how well the composer, himself a brilliant piano player, knows how to use the instrument. His polyphonic, complex compositional style gives way to various possibile interpretations. Despite high technical demands, the entire work is comfortable to play.A beginning appearing from nowhere which, with its consistent basic rhythm, reveals Jost's passion for jazz music, gradually becomes more intense. Eventually, the music changes into a softer, lyrical passage, allowing time to breathe. At the end, motifs from the beginning are taken up again. And after a phase of great intensity, the work fades into nothing.
