Marsyas ist ein Satyr aus den Metamorphosen des griechischen Dichters Ovid (43 v. Chr.-17 n. Chr.). Tournée en dérisionpar Héra et Aphrodite, et ayant constaté elle-même, en voyant le reflet de son visage dans l’eau, que l’instrument, quand elle en jouait, lui déformait les traits, elle jeta la fl te en maudissant quiconque la ramasserait. Cette malédiction frappa le satyre Marsyas qui la trouva et en joua magnifiquement, au grand plaisir des paysans des contrées phrygiennes qui l’écoutaient et qui prétendirent que le dieu Apollon en personne n’aurait pu mieux faire avec sa lyre. Apollon entra dans une colère formidable et proposa l’insolent satyre un concours musical dont le vainqueur pourrait faire subir au vaincu le ch timent de son choix. Les Muses et le roi Midas, choisis comme juges, ne réussirent pas départager les concurrents. Alors, Apollon joua de la lyre l’envers et demanda Marsyas d’en faire autant avec son instrument. Cela était impossible. Marsyas n’y parvint pas, et Apollon fut déclaré vainqueur. Il se vengea du satyre de la plus cruelle façon : il l’attacha un pin et l’écorcha vif.Certains racontent qu’Apollon, se repentant de sa vengeance, métamorphosa en fleuve le corps de Marsyas. Edouard Lalo's Symphonie espagnole was heretofore inadequately edited: the two first editions (piano reduction and score) differ considerably from one another, since the composer continued to hone his work after the completion of the engraver's master for the piano reduction, and he even made certain compositional additions. Christian Rudolf Riedel's new urtext edition eliminates all these inadequacies and inconsistencies. Moreover, the editor was able to base himself for the first time ever on the previously unknown autograph of the solo part. The discovery of this source was nothing less than sensational. Lalo, who was an outstanding violinist in his own right, had meticulously marked up his manuscript with the help of the arrangement by Pablo de Sarasate, to whom Lalo had dedicated the work and entrusted the world premiere. This new source situation allowed for the preparation of an urtext edition that corresponds throughout to the author's final version. Farewell was composed at the farewell of Fanfare Trompetterkorps Der Cavalerie in 1993. The work is based on 2 of the most famous tattoo signals in military music: Reveille and Tattoo. Farewell opens festively with blasting trumpets and then continues with a somewhat melancholy melody based on the reveille theme. After interweaving all the signals and themes in the work's climax, the work ends quietly, with in the distance a lone trumpet playing the tattoo signal.... Charles Camilleri (1931 - 2009) was a Maltese composer. As a teenager, he composed a number of works based on folk music and legends of his native Malta. He moved from his early influences by Maltese folk music to a musical form in which nothing is fixed and his compositions evolve from themselves with a sense of fluency and inevitability. He composed over 100 works for orchestra, chamber ensemble, voice and solo instruments. Camilleri's work has been performed throughout the world and his research of folk music and improvisation, the influences of the sounds of Africa and Asia, together with the academic study of European music, helped him create a universal style. Camilleri is recognized in Malta as one of the major composers of his generation. He died on 3 January 2009 at the age of 77. His funeral took place two days later at Naxxar, his long-time town of residence. Flags across Malta were flown at half-mast in tribute to him.
