The cantata for the 20th Sunday after Trinity. Ah! I see now, as I to the wedding bidden, BWV 162 was first performed on 25 October 1716 in the Castle church at Weimar. During the first year in his position as Thomaskantor, Bach made a revival performance of the cantata on 10 October 1723. For this Leipzig version he added an additional obbligato voice in the first movement and in the final chorale he added a Corno da tirarsi, which played colla-parte with the soprano. However, we do not know what this mysterious instrument looked like. For performances today we recommend using a trumpet or a slide trumpet. The cantata begins not with an introductory chorus, but rather with a sonorous bass aria with a string accompaniment and obbligato trumpet. The following movements, movement 2 through 5, are also performed by vocal soloists. The third movement, a soprano aria, presents a peculiarity: the obbligato wind parts were not contained in the original version of this cantata. Published by Breitkopf and Haertel (BR.OB-5300-15). ISBN 9790004335109. 10 x 12.5 inches. Robert Levin's brilliant and inspired recording (with Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music) and Breitkopf's new edition have two things in common: their historically well-founded approach and the editorial team consisting of Robert Levin and Cliff Eisen. Here, Urtext signifies an eschewal of a final version that never existed and that Mozart himself had never even envisaged. On the contrary, Levin and Eisen pursue an editorial philosophy tailored to Mozart and his music: Standardization is the greatest aesthetic threat in the performance of Mozarts concertos. To prepare the score of the new edition, the editors were able to consult the autograph, located in Krakow, for the very first time. The new edition clearly incorporates a much broader base of findings than any previous edition, including the NMA. At the same time, the score and piano reduction offer a wealth of additional information on performance practice gleaned from further authentic sources, including observations on continuo practice, instruments, size and disposition of the orchestra, ornaments, tempo and character, cadenzas and flourishes. $7.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 3 to 4 weeks

Soprano voice solo, SATB choir, 2 clarino/trumpet, 2 violin, viola, basso continuo SKU: CA.4003849 Nach Johann Zach. Composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Edited by Hellmut Federhofer. Arranged by Eberhard Kraus. This edition: urtext. Stuttgart Urtext Edition: Mozart. Tantum Ergo In B Neu 2002. Sacred vocal music, Corpus Christi, Eucharist, Communion. Single Part, Organ. Composed circa 1772. KV 142 (Anh. 186d). 2 pages. Duration 5 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 40.038/49. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.4003849). ISBN 9790007217105. Key: B flat major. Language: Latin. In 1965 Robert Munster, the Mozart scholar, determined that in a manuscript copy containing 13 settings of the Tantum ergo by Johann Zach (1669-1773), the Director of Music at the Mainz Cathedral, the final Tantum ergo in B flat major was for the most part identical to KV 142. Zach's work is 43 measures long instead of the 63 measures of KV 142, although the Amen coda is missing. For some unknown reason, Mozart made a few changes to Zach's composition and through the addition of the coda extended the work by twenty measures. | Nameless Seas (Piano Concerto) Piano and Orchestra Fennica Gehrman

Piano and orchestra SKU: FG.55011-372-5 Composed by Matthew Whittall. Study score. Fennica Gehrman #55011-372-5. Published by Fennica Gehrman (FG.55011-372-5). ISBN 9790550113725. Images of the sea figure prominently throughout my life and memories: from holidays on the Atlantic coast during my Canadian childhood to my current Baltic home, and the imagined, only later experienced Mediterranean of my ancestral heritage. As an immigrant (son of an immigrant) bound to two northern countries, the sea is emblematic of my twin homelands, from the expanses of water surrounding them to those separating them. A Mari usque ad Mare. The sea is also an enduring image of the unknown, of expanses unexplored, of the raw power of nature and, for too many currently, of terror holding a hope of refuge - or the pain of loss. Such disparate ideas were captured for me in the seascapes of the New York painter MaryBeth Thielhelm, whom I met in 2008 during a residency on the Gulf of Mexico. Her vast, abstract, nearly monochromatic depictions of imaginary seas in wildly varying moods were the catalyst for a concerto where the piano is frequently far from a hero battling a collective, but rather acts as a channel for elemental forces surging up from the orchestra, floating - sometimes barely so - on its constantly shifting surface. There are few themes to speak of, beyond a handful of iconic ideas that periodically cycle upward. Rather, the piano's material is largely an ornamentation of the more primal rhythmic and harmonic impulses from the orchestra below - a poetic interpretation, if you will, of the more immediate experience of facing the vastness of some unknown body of water. The title Nameless Seas is borrowed from one of Thielhelm's exhibitions, as are those of the four movements, which are bridged together into two halves of roughly equal weight - one rhapsodic and free, the other more single-minded and direct, separated only by a short breath. The opening movement, Nocturne, is predominantly calm, if brooding, darkness and light alternating throughout. Lyrical arabesques sparkle over gently lapping cross-currents in the strings and mirrored timpani, the piano's full power only rarely deployed. The waves gradually build, drawing in the full orchestra for a meeting of forces in Land and Sea, a brighter, more warmly lyrical scene that unfolds in series of dreamlike, sometimes even nostalgic visions, which for me carry strong memories of sitting on rocks above surging Atlantic waves. The third movement, Wake, is a fast, perpetual-motion texture of glinting, darting rhythms and sudden shafts of light, with a prominent part for the steel drums, limning the piano's quicksilver figurations. An ecstatic climax crashes into a solo cadenza that grows progressively calmer and more introspective rather than virtuosic. Much of the tension finally releases into Unclaimed Waters, a drifting, meditative seascape in which the piano is progressively engulfed by a series of ever-taller waves, ultimately dissolving into a tolling, rippling continuum of sound. It has been a great privilege to realize such a long-held dream as this piece, and to write it for not one, but two great pianists. Risto-Matti Marin and Angela Hewitt, both of whose friendship and support have been unfailing and humbling, share the dedication. Nameless Seas was commissioned by the PianoEspoo festival and Canada's National Arts Centre, with the premieres in Ottawa and Helsinki led by Hannu Lintu and Olari Elts. Thanks are due also to the Jenny and Antti Wihuri fund, whose generous grant provided me with much-needed time, and Escape to Create in Seaside, Florida, the source to which I returned to do a large part of the work. $49.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 4 to 6 weeks
| Sonatas in D major and E major [Score] Edition HH
Flute & basso continuo SKU: HH.HH443-FSP Composed by Simon Balicourt. Edi...(+)
Flute & basso continuo SKU: HH.HH443-FSP Composed by Simon Balicourt. Edited by Michael Talbot. Flute & Basso Continuo. Full score and parts. Edition HH Music Publishers #HH443-FSP. Published by Edition HH Music Publishers (HH.HH443-FSP). ISBN 9790708146490. The Andante opening Sonata 5 in D major, with its delicately chiselled, ever-changing rhythms in the flute line, exemplifies to perfection the galant style. The light-footed Allegro assai that follows looks back to Quantz and even Vivaldi. Balicourt concludes the sonata with his most original movement in terms of structure. This consists of two Presto sections enclosing a Grazioso ‘core’ in D minor. Unexpectedly, the second Presto, starting as if a simple da capo repeat of the first, quickly diverges; its throwaway, staccato ending is a real audience-pleaser. | Sonata 6, in E major, opens with a lyrical Andante that almost breathes the air of the Classical style. The second movement, in contrast, is a typically baroque Siciliana, moving to E minor and displaying a rich harmonic palette. The finale is a variation rondo (rondeau varié) in which both repeats of the refrain are ornamented in different ways. As Balicourt’s description, Alla Polonese, conveys, the rhythm is that of a Polonaise, a stately but slightly exotic dance that had become popular throughout Europe after the electors of Saxony, starting with Friedrich August I, assumed the Polish crown. $22.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 4 to 6 weeks

Concert Band - Grade 2.5 SKU: AP.37820S From the Armed Forces Suite. Composed by Vince Gassi. Concert Band; MakeMusic Cloud; Performance Music Ensemble; Single Titles. Young Symphonic. Patriotic. Score. 20 pages. Alfred Music #00-37820S. Published by Alfred Music (AP.37820S). UPC: 038081434407. English. The men and women of the Royal Canadian Air Force are the inspiration behind this original composition by Vince Gassi. The first work in his Armed Forces Suite, it takes off with a bright, spirited theme first heard in the flutes. The rest of the ensemble soon joins in the maneuvers and offers a fuller tactical report. Clarinets take over with dignity, providing a lyrical contrast, and are supported by a stately accompaniment. It isn't long before we start to feel the spirit of adventure building to a contrasting section conveying images of stealth and intrigue. Covert operations lead finally to a restatement of the opening theme by the brass with flute and clarinet obligato. Interlace with fragments from the covert section and we are carried to a soaring conclusion. If you are looking for a spirited concert opener or closer, look no further!
