My Exsultet uses the ancient chant to which the Easter Proclamation is declaimed, normally by a deacon at the start of the Great Vigil of Easter. The chant dates from somewhere between the fourth and seventh centuries and consists of formulaic repetitions of simple phrases. I have elaborated these phrases canonically, melodically, and harmonically into a three-part vocal fabric, accompanied by obbligato instruments. The full text of the original goes on for quite some time. My choral-instrumental version is much shorter.

Jyrki Linjama's second string quartet (2018) is subtitled Allerheiligentag III. The material for the Allerheiligentag cycle is a Finnish folk chorale for All Saints' Day (no. 146 in the Finnish Hymn Book). The first work in the cycle is a string trio (2007), the second a piece for orchestra (2009), and the fourth and fifth are solo works for viola da gamba and violin.The composer tells: The choice of topic and material for the string trio was originally prompted by the venue at which it was to be premiered: the old church on the island of Seili (Sjalo). The bleak history of the island's leper and mental hospital evoked images of suffering and death. I got so attached to the harsh and beautiful melody that it began to generate a whole cycle. The string quartet is in three movements (slow-quick-slow) tensed in different ways by contrasts. The first movement has both swinging softness and cutting sharpness, the Scherzo the wildness of a dance of death and lyricism, and the finale the irrevocability of a funeral march and tender melodiousness.

The bleak history of the mental hospital on the island invited images of suffering and death. I got so attached to the fine, bleak melody that this series of works began to emerge. Lasting 17 minutes, the sonata for solo violin has three movements, all of them embracing the folk choral material and Béla Bartók’s influence in different ways. It was premiered by Kaija Saarikettu at the Kaustinen Chamber Music Festival in 2020.

Liszt composed three piano works on Paganini's bell theme. The best known of these works is La Campanella (1851). The Clochette fantasia, that is the Grande Fantaisie de bravoure sur la Clochette de Paganini (1831-1834) as well as the early version of the F sharp minor study, the Campanella (1838) in A flat minor are much less played. Liszt composed a fourth piano work on the campanelle theme. Similar to the preceding it is a series of variations. The second theme is also taken from Paganini: it is the theme of a variation series known with the title The Carnival in Venice.

Beethoven's autographs of the first three piano concertos opp. 15, 19 and 37 are the earliest of all orchestral scores which have survived integrally. Thanks to source studies, we know today that a first version of the Concerto in Bb major op. 19 had already originated in Bonn in 1790 at the latest. It was followed by a second version written in Vienna most likely in 1793 which included the Rondo in Bb major WoO 6 as finale. A third version followed most probably in 1794 and led to the fourth and final version, written in Prague in October 1798, as Beethoven sojourned there at the beginning of the concert season. Stratoscape, by Swiss composer Gauthier Dupertuis, is a colorful and contrasting work for wind orchestra, depicting the view of our earth as seen from the stratosphere. This voyage into the sky is pictural, but also metaphorical, as it is also about distancing from our world. The work is divided into five sections: I Ignition!, II Broadness & The Big Blue, III Stars Shining from Down to Above, IV Destructive Forces, V One and Only Home Five contrasting movements, starting with Ignition in which Gauthier Dupertuis tries to musically convey the majesty of our planet seeing if from the atmosphere, ending with One and Only Hope, as the title say, a message of hope. In between three movements that depict the broadness of the landscapes of our planet (second movement), the fragility of our earth at night with only the stars shining (third movement). The Sonata à violin solo (M.S. 83) is an early work by Paganini that can be ascribed to the years 1796-1800, a period which includes works such as the posthumous Grande concerto (M.S. 75), the Inno patriottico con variazioni (M.S. 81) and the Tema variato (M.S. 82)for violin. There are no doubts as to the authenticity of the work: the highly virtuosic experimental writing, the indications “Organetto†and “Flagioletto†and the use of the fourth string are all distinctive traits found in Paganini's writing from this period which link the Sonata to the Inno patriottico con variazioni and the Tema variato. The most significant characteristics of this composition are its length and the three-movement structure that connect it to the Classical style, at least far as the first movement is concerned: it is written in sonata form, something rarely seen in Paganini's solo violin works.

This enchanting melody is from the fourth movement of Bach’s Cantata 140 which was composed in 1731 using the parable of the wise and foolish virgins as the text. The work is beautiful in its simplicity with only three melodic lines, demonstrating Bach’s counterpoint at its best. For greatest effect it is suggested that the trumpets and trombones play behind the band or to the right and left of the stage. Bach schreef een ontelbare hoeveelheid cantates.
