Between the 1890s and World War II the axis of Paris - Prague was found to be incredibly attractive. Its attraction lay in sharing mutual political and social values and led to the demand of certain cultural and artistic unity. The aim of this book is to raise questions regarding the musical works of this period, and discuss which musical works show this 'affinity in choice'. During the course of the 20th century 'cultural polarities' started blurring, and paradoxically enough it was not one of the Slav countries, but Paris where Czech composers reinvented, through the Neo-Classical style ( mainly Stravinski's) their 'Eastern pole': light and archaic themes, a specific register of folk and trivial music, and the preference for creative spontaneity in compositions. Which features in the direction taken by Bohuslav Martinu can be regarded as typical of this tendency? What were the positions of the other Czech composers such as Leos Janacek, Alois Haba, Karel Husa, Jaroslav Jezek and others, and artists working in the musical, artistic or literal fields, for instance Arne Hosek, Milada Souckova, Jiri Kolar, Milan Slavicky, Milan Kundera, within this context? The analysis of these questions regarding the whole of the 20th century is completed with several so far unpublished or unknown sources.

Liszt was inspired, mainly under the influence of Berlioz's Faust compositions, by the Faust, and much later by the Mephisto themes to write several works. In the first period between 1856-62 he wrote the Faust Symphony and Zwei Episoden aus Lenaus Faust which included Night march and Dance in the village tavern - the latter being also entitled First Mephisto Waltz - these for orchestra, along with versions for piano two and four hands, and for two pianos written simultaneously. The rest of the Mephisto compositions are all late works from between 1880-85: 2nd Mephisto Waltz 1880-1881, 3rd Mephisto Waltz and Mephisto polka 1883, 4th Mephisto Waltz 1885, 5th Mephisto Waltz, subtitled Bagatelle sans tonalité, probably also 1885. The five Mephisto Waltzes and the Mephisto Polka are now published by EMB in one volume (the first such selection world-wide!), as separate edition of the New Liszt Edition, where they appeared in a both critical and practical edition between 1982-84.This publication is printed on high quality, durable paper made from renewable raw materials in an environmentally friendly way.

Nico Schoeters took his first percussion lessons with Eric Buyle in the Academy for Music and Word in Boom, near Antwerp, after getting the hang of it through private lessons by Jozef Vervliet. Afterwards he continued his music studies at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp, where he was taught by Leo Ouderits, Carlo Willems and Koen Wilmaers. In 1998 he graduated there with great distinction as Master in percussion. After cooperating on various projects in Belgium and abroad as a freelance percussionist, Nico took up a position as a percussionist in the National Orchestra of Belgium. However, despite of all his achievements as a percussionist, Nico Schoeters didn’t take his first musical steps by playing percussion, but by playing the piano. His love for the piano remained a common thread in his musical career. For example, he played numerous gigs as a pianist with his jazz quartet ‘Just Friends, consisting of a number of top musicians who are his friends. In addition he started composing piano works in 2012. Cosmopolydian is my first composition for symphonic windband. It's a solo piece for flute and vibraphone which is dedicated to Inge Smedts, principal piccolo at the Royal Wind Band of the Belgian Guides. It is written in the context of a musical project ‘Cocktail Maison'. This project includes a concert on May 25th, 2017 in De Singel in Antwerp where this work will be premiered, a CD recording and a concert tour. All the pieces for this project are new compositions by Piet Swerts, Jef Neve, Klaas Coulembier, Etienne Houben, Bart Watté, Jan Huylebroeck, Francois Glorieux and myself. All the compositions are inspired by a cocktail. My choice is the Cosmopolitan, but the non-alcoholic version, the mocktail actually. The title Cosmopolydian is a nod to the lydian scale which I used as a base for the majority of the piece. The idea behind the music is an image of children enjoying themselves, worry-free, during the holidays. Tired but satisfied, they go to sleep and have wonderful dreams. The next day they wake up to start a beautiful new day.The work is constructed in a typical ABA form. A quick first part: ‘sparkling allegro', which of course should sound very light and playful. A slow middle part warm adagio, in which the beautiful dreams become audible. The last part is a re-exposition of the first part in which eventually all the themes merge into the final.

In this GRAMMY-winning song, What Was I Made For?, from the Barbie movie, Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell captured a major theme from the movie---self-awareness. With beautiful melodies and soft rhythms, the violins, violas, and cellos cover the lovely melody with lush accompaniments in all sections. Arranger Bob Phillips set this hit perfectly for intermediate string orchestra while remaining very close to the original. An optional repeat allows for flexibility in the length of the piece.

Students will enjoy the musical conversations that take place when they perform this trio sonata from the 17th century. The stately Preludio in C major is accompanied by a soaring bass line that is an excellent introduction to the art of Baroque continuo playing. Following the Allegro, the first theme returns to close out this classy, elegant piece of music. All parts remain in 1st position.

Earth and Sky was commissioned by the BBC for the Proms 2000 season. In keeping with the millennial theme, a work presenting a vision of the future was requested. Trying to be helpful, the BBC provided me with the predictions of various pundits, but their ideas seemed dizzyingly contradictory. Then the simple thought struck me that however varied and complex the answers, the big questions will always remain the same. We may now have a map of the human genome, but how to use the map? How shall I know where I should go? How may I see the I that's me?As a musician I am hopeful that, no matter how the world develops, future generations will still come together to dance and sing and play. The mysterious power of music to bind us socially and inspire us individually seems to be built into our genes. So, a song of questions; a song about music---these were the ideas which I took to Vikram Seth, who had generously agreed to write the words for me. The resulting poem provided lots of inspiration. It is entirely monosyllabic, enabling considerable variety of rhythmic treatment. I love its permutations and its imagery of paradox and inversion and I have amused myself by playing similar games with the musical material. But there is seriousness as well as fun---the text's juxtaposition of the certainty of death with the search for purpose in life achieves great poignancy when sung by young voices.(Alec Roth)This product is Printed on Demand and may take several weeks to fulfill.

This exciting work for beginning band uses a technique in which primary themes begin on a unison note and then move stepwise away and back while the other voices remain static or proceed in contrapuntal inversion. This creates chords that expand and contract almost continuously beneath the melody. The percussion section plays an important role providing a rhythmic base which enhances the flow and development of the piece from beginning to end.
