“There is no doubt in my mind about the pedagogical potency of the use of the Swiss Ball for conducting study. This simple device transfers responsibility for teaching from heretoforeused verbal explanations to a new world of instruction that uses body awareness as the primary vehicle.†— James Jordan, Learn Conducting Technique with the Swiss Exercise Ball  Traditional conducting methods rely on how conductors look––not how they feel. James Jordan’s groundbreaking Learn Conducting Technique with the Swiss Exercise Ball takes the study of conducting beyond the mechanics to a higher plane. Using the Swiss Exercise Ball, everyone from the most experienced conductor to the beginner can tie into a state of awarenessthat opens the door to increased musical expression and kinesthetic awareness. With the aid of a Swiss Exercise Ball and the Body Mapping techniques described in this book, conductors can reach a new level of artistic expression and mastery. The Swiss Exercise Ball is available in four sizes from GIA Publications, and each comes with a pump. Choose the ball size based on the height of the conductor: • 45 cm ball, under 5’ tall (G-6575) • 55 cm ball, 5’ to 5’8†tall (G-6576) • 65 cm ball, 5’9†to 6’3†tall (G-6577) • 75 cm ball, 6’3†and taller (G-6578).

Brahms' elegy Nanie op. 82, based on the poem by Friedrich von Schiller, was composed in 1880/81 following the death of the painter Anselm Feuerbach, whom Brahms greatly admired. In contrast with the poem, Brahms' Nanie ends full of hope: after earthly decline, beauty can live on in art. As in his Deutsches Requiem op. 45, in Nanie Brahms creates a musical connection between mourning and consolation in an incomparable way. Inspired by the model of classical Roman-Greek laments, the work adopts the classical verse form chosen by Schiller - surely alluding to Feuerbach's classically-inspired art.Scored for mixed chorus and orchestra, we are publishing the work in a modern Urtext edition. One or more harps can be used ad lib. The primary source is the first printed edition of 1881. The latest scholarly discoveries as well as practical requirements have been taken into consideration. Performance material is available on sale as well as a vocal score, based on Brahms's original vocal score, but in a revised performing version.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote his Hafner Symphony K. 385 in the summer of 1782 on the occasion of the elevation into the nobility of his friend and patron Sigmund Hafner. Next to the well-known movements, this version (A) also contained the March K. 408/2 (385a) and possibly a second, no longer extant minuet. Called Hafner=Musique by Mozart, the work was unquestionably a serenade at first. In early 1783 Mozart then reduced the Hafner Music for his subscription concert at the Vienna Burgtheater on 23 March 1783 to a four-movement symphony. This is the form in which the work was first printed in 1785 (Version B). For a further performance, Mozart added flute and clarinet parts to the symphony. In 1805, this version (C) was published by Andre in Offenbach, who thus began making it known. The primary sources of the present Breitkopf Urtext edition are the autographs to K. 385 and K. 408/2 (385a). It thus becomes possible for the first time to play all three versions of the Hafner Music, since the variants of Versions A and B can be easily discerned through indications in footnotes and notes in small print.

Composed for violinist Baird Dodge, James Matheson's SPIN is a three-movement study in various meanings of the word spin. I. Gyre has the character of a whimsically spinning object in a sort of arena. II. Web is essentially a slow movement. It explores a nearly static, sinewy texture comprised of slowly undulating chords in which snippets of melody emerge from the notes held while the chords disappear. Similar to the first movement, III. Spiral explores a kinetic notion of spinning, this time in the form of rapidly rising scales.SPIN was composed in early 1998. Each of the work’s three movements assumes the task of exploring a different meaning of the title. The first movement, Gyre (as in gyroscope), has the character of a whimsically spinning object in a sort of arena – spinning and bouncing off the walls (like a spinning penny, which bounces off of an object unpredictably and with somewhat explosive force). The primary musical idea consists of high harmonics in the violins set against a rocking pulse in the lower strings. This basic texture is explored in various guises as the movement progresses.Web is essentially a slow movement. It explores a nearly static, sinewy texture comprised of slowly undulating chords. Snippets of melody emerge from the notes held while the chords disappear. The music intensifies, leading to an expected climax (or anti-climax) of pizzicatos, before returning to the opening material and winding gently to a close.Like Gyre, the third movement, Spiral, explores a kinetic notion of spinning, this time in the form of rapidly rising scales. The formal idea of this movement, however, has the character of a spiral, with its tendency toward implosion.SPIN was written for violinist Baird Dodge.

This humorous little vignette for string quartet was composed in 1979 and was originally intended to be published by Piedmont Music, the ASCAP division of EB Marks Classical. For reasons unknown, however, it remained in manuscript form until 2021, when a copy of the composer's autograph parts was discovered in the archives of a completely different Alan Shulman piece. This newly engraved Latham Music edition therefore represents the first publication of Shulman's delightful work, as well as the first full score. As the title suggests, this is a medium-slow rag, or cakewalk in a loose AABA form. The bluesy and graceful main melody is introduced by the first violin in a call and response exchange with the rest of the ensemble. The restatement of the primary theme is led by the second violin, with the entire ensemble playing pizzicato, having the effect of playful mockery. In the B section, the first violin earnestly reasserts the stately grace from the opening however, the cello is clearly becoming restless and decides to take over the lead just before the final reprise. The lighthearted ending again has the first violin doing its best to bring the tune to a refined conclusion, but the rest of the group still has mischief in mind. After a couple moments of seeming confusion, the ensemble regroups at last and plays the final riff with resolute emphasis. If you're looking to add a light moment to a recital program, or looking for a short, medium level contest piece that players and audiences alike will enjoy, this little miniature is an ideal choice!

The primary source on which the new Carus Urtext edition is based is the first edition of the score from 1800. Contrary to normal custom, Haydn published the score himself in order to avoid unauthorized publications and to present an optimally designed edition from an authentic hand. With this original document, which has been compared with additional relevant sources, Carus now offers a musical text based on the latest musicological findings. The critical report provides all of the important data concerning the edition in a compact form suitable for practical use [practical performance]. A detailed foreword offers insight into the genesis of the work, its construction and reception and illuminates compositional and theological and spiritual-historical aspects. In addition to the score, with singing texts in two languages (G. van Swieten's original German and English text), in the interest of legibility, vocal and choral scores will be offered in two separate editions (German or English). This work is now available in carus music, the choir app. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5199000.
