The 'Divertimento giocoso' by Harald Genzmer created in 1960 is scored for two woodwind instruments (flutes, recorders or transverse flute and oboe) as solo instruments opposed to the string orchestra. The composer, whose work suits the amateur music-making very much in many respects, succeeded in creating a tonal arrangement that is individual in style. In the first movement, this rhythmically very lively, thematically clearly visible and harmonically inter-esting though not revolutionary work presents the strings and the solo instruments often enter-ing canonically with an easily remembered -seventh motif; in the second movement, it leads a melody dying away a long time to a dynamic climax, adds harmonic cross relations to a scherzo moving in dance style and closes with a lively vivace movement. (Das Liebhaber-orchester).

Dutch composer, artist and poet Adriaen Valerius is mostly remembered today for his collection of 79 songs for voice and lute or cittern, published posthumously in 1626. Philip Sparke has taken one melody from this collection that tells of the War of Independence with Spain. The beautiful slow melody is followed by a series of lively variations to form an extremely entertaining piece that will bring great joy to all who perform and listen to it.

French composer, Charles Gounod (1818-1893) was a prominent in his day, best remembered for his “Ave Maria” and his opera, Faust. 1854 saw the premiere of his Solemn Mass, also known as the St. Cecilia Mass. This work fully established Gounod as a noteworthy composer. Despite being a minor composer to us today, Gounod was famed in his day, so much so that at his funeral, Camille Saint-Saëns played the organ and Gabriel Fauré conducted. Gounod's Solemn Mass proves the composer's extraordinary talent and caught the attention of much of Paris when it was first performed. Famous recordings include that of the Chorus of Radio France with the New Philharmonia Orchestra. For all aspiring choirs, Gounod's St. Cecilia Mass is an imperative, sublime addition to the repertoire.

This piece will remind audiences of other non-traditional seasonal pieces in the style of American standard songs with their evocations of sleigh rides, apple cider, and cozy hearths. The melodic style and contemporary harmonies suggest a time when gatherings of friends and families are remembered with pleasure and a particular kind of American nostalgia for days gone by.

Audi Filia was written for the celebrations for St Cecilia's Day in Rome in October 1720. It was originally part of a much larger mass setting for the event, which is considered to be one of the finest pieces of music to survive from the Baroque era. This movement, intended for the gradual, is one of the more popular sections and is often performed as a stand-alone piece. It is scored for 2 Oboes, Strings, Organ, and Soprano solo.

To benefit Chorus America, Stucky allowed himself to be auctioned off as a prize - the high bidder would receive a new work from the composer. After a few years and not really hearing anything, Stucky suddenly found himself up against a deadline. He reached back to a favorite poem by A.R. Ammons, Eyesight, which, he says, Won't let...his reader rest till the very last word...one of those sudden insights that leave us breathless..This piece has an odd history. A few years ago, I agreed to be one of the“prizes†in an auction to benefit Chorus America: the highest bidder wouldget a new piece from me, while their money went to the organization. Thewinning bid came from a collection of several professional choruses anddirectors. But I was always a little vague about the details, and, hearingnothing more about it for a few years, forgot the whole thing. One day I received a message from Thomas Edward Morgan, directorof the Ars Nova Chamber Singers in Boulder: they had scheduled thepremiere of my new piece for a few weeks later, and could they have themusic, please? I needed a text, quickly, and (as usual) I was in a Los Angeleshotel room, not at home with my books. So I turned to the internet andsoon tracked down my favorite poet, A.R. Ammons (1926-2001).Once I stumbled on “Eyesight,†I remembered having loved the poemyears before. Archie must have loved it, too, because he included it bothin his Collected Poems 1951-1971 and in the later Selected Poems. It haseverything you want in an Archie Ammons poem: what Edward Hirschcalled his “offbeat, sideways, unpredictable radiance,†his “homespunglory.†It has one of his trademark conversations with a mountain (perhapsfrom his native North Carolina), it has the fluid motion from one line tothe next (enjambment, if you want to get technical) that won’t let him orhis reader rest till the very last word of the very last line, and it has in thatlast line one of those sudden insights that leave us breathless: “some thingsthat go are gone.â€I miss Archie, but he’s not gone. I’m grateful for the wonderful poems heleft us, and I’m grateful that he was always generous and kind when I hadthe chutzpah to add my music to his.

The composition of Anglican church music was never one of Byrd's priorities, but his anthems on English texts remained in favour long after his death, and for two centuries were the works by which his name was remembered. Full and verse anthems are included in this volume, with anthems from secular sources and fragmentary and doubtful works also collected.

Nico Muhly's It Remains To Be Seen was written in 2006 for for full Orchestra and has a duration of approximately 9 minutes. This work was originally written for the Boston University Tanglewood Institute''s 40th Anniversary Gala in July 2006. The piece begins with a chord identical to the one at the end of Stravinsky''s Firebird suite and proceeds into a series of charged nocturnal episodes. The piece is a nine-minute navigation of an excited, occasionally illuminated, dark road filled with arguing, cars, fragments of remembered music, and a constant, propulsive pulse.

Remembered chiefly for his virginal music, this always fresh and charming composer - who was probably an instrument maker by trade - may well have penned these pieces simply for the enjoyment of his London friends living in the wards of Bishopsgate and Cripplegate. His experience as a keyboard player may have led him to some chromatic vocal writing, particularly in the admirable Construe my meaning, rivalling strangenesses in the work of his Italian contemporary, Gesualdo. This Victor López work evokes images of excitement, bravery and sorrow as Erebus and Terror: The Lost Ships retells the story of the Sir John Franklin expedition in search of the Northwest Passage. Beginning with anticipation as the explorers depart their homeland, the rousing melodic theme is written for clarinet, horn and alto saxophone. The excitement of the journey turns melancholic for a few moments, as the gravity of their journey sinks in, but their courage is again renewed as the trumpets tell the story. A haunting flute and oboe duet foreshadows the inevitable crash portrayed with strong chromatic dissonances, into the ice and the loss of both ships and their crews. The journey has ended for these men, but their story lives on and Sir John Franklin is remembered as a hero due to his valuable contributions to the development of Canada’s north. Highly recommended!

Rev. John Hunter's book Devotional Services serves as the structure and basis for this SATB anthem for the Thanksgiving season. Using the hymn-tune NUN DANKET, John Ness Beck creates a glorious harmonic experience by using organ and trumpets to echo and interact with both the singing and a narration that serves as the majority of the message of the litany. A truly innovative appropach that will long be remembered by your congregation and choir.

String Quartet No.2 was written in 1951, and dedicated to Percy and Ella Grainger. It is recognised as one of his least extravagant creations, but is nevertheless a solid work which is continually underappreciated. This is the set of parts.
Cyril Scott (1879-1970) was a British composer, pianist and poet. His most popular works, which he is largely remembered by today, were written in the years preceding the Second World War, however he continued to compose prolifically, in the face of indifference from the outside world, right up until his death at the age of 91. His music is predominantly in the Romantic style, and serves as atasteful reminder of a bygone age.
