Leroy Anderson (1908-1975), ever-popular in the concert hall for his light orchestral pieces, found a great musical ally in the Boston Pops Orchestra under its director, Arthur Fiedler. Premiering many of his works, they introduced to the world such gems as Sleigh Ride, Jazz Pizzicato, and The Syncopated Clock. In the 1950s, Anderson began to record his music under the Decca label, and out of these sessions came a short piece for orchestra, THE FIRST DAY OF SPRING, first recorded on June 25, 1954. A solo horn introduces the melody, which drifts through the orchestra into an idyllic finish. JOHANN STRAUSS II (1825-1899) initially wrote FRÜHLINGSSTIMMEN, Op. 410 (VOICES OF SPRING) as a concert aria. He dedicated the piece, with a libretto by Richard Genée, to pianist-composer Alfred Grünfeld. When Bertha Schwarz (stage name, Bianca Bianchi) sang the first performance at the Theater an der Wien on March 1, 1883, the audience loved it so much that they demanded an encore. The composer wasted no time in arranging a purely orchestral version, which the Strauss Orchestra premiered only seventeen days later. The waltz achieved great success during his Russian tour in 1886. This edition for reduced orchestra was arranged by Adolphe Dumont. Programme note In this, the second volume of My Spring Diary, which depicts the progress of the day from afternoon to night, the technical difficulties are generally greater than in vol. 1, and all the pieces are for piano solo. Freer use is made of the various types of notation which were introduced in the first volume. The 8 th piece (“Day’s End”) uses towards the end the type of notation called “open form”. The piece is a kind of musical resumé of the whole collection – elements of the earlier pieces reappear and at the end of the piecethe performer can exercise control over the way in which these elements are combined. The sequence of the individual groups is free, and it is not obligatory to play all of them. The only limitation is that the arrows within the individual groups must be followed and that the piece should end with the short passage marked “conclusion”.  .
