This is like a waltz: it is written in 3/4 time but played so as to give the impression of one beat in bar. This short work is partly based on the well-known bassoon solo from Peter and the Wolf, the musical fairy tale by Sergei Prokofiev. However, the original melody is presented in â??inversionâ??: ascending intervals become descending ones, and vice versa. The middle cantabile section is mainly situated in the higher bassoon register, thus forming a lovely contrast with the other parts. The piano accompaniment is modest and transparent, so that the bassoon is not drowned out.Dit korte werkje is deels geënt op de bekende fagotsolo uit Peter en de Wolf, het muzikale sprookje van Sergei Prokofjev. De oorspronkelijke melodie wordt echter in â??omkeringâ?? gepresenteerd: stijgende toonafstanden worden dus dalende en vice versa. Unusually for him, Davies starts his Bassoon Concerto not with slow music but with speed and brilliance: the opening is a Presto, initiated by the strings, and only at the entry of the soloist does the tempo relax to that of a real introduction. Out of this grow a big dancing Allegro. The slow movement begins and ends with a simple song, around fantastical ornamentation from the soloist. The finale is again a recitative and dance, with a slow coda. The whole work is an immense show of stamina, poetry and athleticism for the bassoon, set against an orchestra coloured by low wind (alto flute, clarinet in A, bass clarinet, contrabassoon, horns). Bassoon part with piano reduction of the orchestral score.

Belgian composer Theo Van Doren (1898 - 1974) was a Belgian composer, teacher and violinist. He was a teacher at the Music Academy of Borgerhout and was also a soloist in the orchestra of the Royal Flemish Opera in Antwerp. This edition of his Andante and Allegro for bassoon and piano was first published by Metropolis Music Publishers in 1967. The opening Andante is a chance for the soloist to demonstrate the lyrical and expressive qualities of the bassoon. Following this is the Allegro, which is a scherzo in 3/8 time, allowing the the soloist to show the technical capabilities and utilize the whole range of the instrument. The work is dedicated to Leo Van de Velde, teacher at the Royal Flemish Conservatory of Music in Antwerp.

The premiere of the chamber music work written at the end of 1987 was given in August 1989 in Manchester. With its fast-slow-fast sequence of movements and the manner of its formation this piece of about 17 minutes duration follows to some extent classical models. There comes a time in life when your parents have passed on. What we are left with is the memories of their love, guidance, support, and the happy times together. Last August when my mum sadly passed away, I wrote an Elegy as part of my grieving. However, as a family we had happy times together and it seemed only right to compose a work which would celebrate this. So, I added a first and last movement to create a short concertino.
