‘Once again the French musicologist Denis Herlin, who mastered the harpsichord under the tutelage of such keyboard legends as Kenneth Gilbert and Huguette Dreyfus, has presented an exemplary edition of a classic from the harpsichord repertoire.’ (Jury of the German Music Edition Prize on BA 10844)Bärenreiter presents Book II of Couperin’s “Pièces de clavecinâ€, first published in 1717, In addition the eight preludes and one allemande from his treatise “L’Art de toucher le clavecin†are included in the appendix. For the first time Denis Herlin has evaluated the many later impressions of the original print, most of which he unearthed himself in international libraries. By preserving the essential features of the original print while largely dispensing with disruptive page-turns within the pieces, the volume brings modern performers close to the special sound of this music. Rounding off this pioneering new edition are an extensive Foreword, notes on historical performance practice, a comprehensive glossary, facsimile pages and a detailed Critical Commentary.

The Gloria in D Major RV 589 is Vivaldi's most famous sacred work and it is among his most important church music compositions. An independent work in one movement, it was probably composed between 1713 and 1717 for the Ospedale della Pieta, one of the orphanages of Venice in which young girls received a thorough musical training. The musically representative work is divided into 12 sections which differ in scoring, movement type, key and expressed emotions. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4000100.

The first volume of Couperin's Harpsichord Pieces does not contain a date of publication, however, it is thought to have been composed during 1716-1717, due to the address which the composer gave on his other Harpsichord compositions. Yet, the compilation remains a favourite. Francois Couperin (1668-1733) is often nicknamed 'Couperin the Great' to distinguish him from other members of the musical family. Many of the composer's works have picturesque titles. Examples of this in his first volume of Pieces for Harpsichord include, Les Papillons (The Butterflies), L'Enchanteresse (The Enchanting) and Les Plaisirs de Saint Germain en Laye (The Pleasures of Saint Germain en Laye). Couperin's moods are expressed through choices of keys, adventurous harmonies and discords. With a significant amount of variation and inspiration, Pieces for Harpsichord is essential to the repertoire of aspiring players of the instrument..

Antonio Lotti was employed at St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice for almost his entire life. In 1717, however, he was lured for two years to Dresden by the Saxon court as a composer of operas. A score of his Kyrie in G minor and his Gloria in G major, combined under the title Missa Sapientia, was later found amongst the personal belongings of Dresden court composer Jan Dismas Zelenka.Zelenka was not the only one person impressed by the Mass: at least two other illustrious composers had copies made, namely Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel. Indeed, the Mass is a magnificent piece, following the concertante style of the time, with a brilliant yet warm string sound (2 violins and 2 violas). Score available separately - see item CA.4066100.

The Credo belongs to that large group of church works which Vivaldi composed in Venice between 1713 and 1717 for the Ospedale della Pieta, then his primary place of employment. The composition, conceived solely for choir and strings, is characterized by a two-layered formal design: a continuous, basic motivic idea, i.e., a constant rhythmic impulse with rapid tone repetition builds an instrumental layer, while on the other hand the writing for choir renders the text in a blocklike structure in chordal declamation. This structure will only be abandoned briefly in the concluding section of work, where the text Et vitam venturi saeculi is embedded in a concise fugue.
