Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) was a celebrated figure in the European music scene in his own lifetime. Warmly welcomed and recommended by Liszt and highly esteemed by Brahms and Tchaikovsky, he took the concert halls by storm with his compositions, influenced by the late-Romantic spirit and advancing as far as musical Impressionism, such the Piano Concerto, the music of Ibsen's Peer Gynt and numerous songs. His Lyrical Pieces delighted all piano-playing music lovers.Grieg had studied at the Leipzig Conservatoire and once called himself 'musically speaking, entirely German'. After his return to his home country, he listened with rapt attention to the songs and dances of the Norwegian farmers and developed his characteristic style on the basis of this music. To him, that was not only a musical, but also a political issue. Grieg, a master of poetry in music, was both an active democrat and a patriot, his ideals being justice and humanity.

Welcome Repertoire Piece Josef Schelb (b. 1894 in Bad Krozingen) belongs to that generation of composers who had to cope with two world wars, severe recessions, and the fatal effects of the Third Reich. Schelb turned to impressionism, expressionism, dodecaphony, and atonality, without, however, firmly settling in any direction, but developing his distinctive personal style out of all this. He is a master of the polyphonic treatment of motives and themes. His Concerto for Englisch Horn and String Orchestra was composed in 1970 in Baden-Baden after he became acquainted with Helmut Koch, the solo English hornist of the former SWF Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden. The three-movement concerto interweaves tonality, dodecaphony, and polyphony in a fascinating and yet discreet manner. A late work of impressive cantabile and yearning poetry, it will quickly secure its place in the up-to-now slim English-horn repertoire.

A dream inspired Charles Tomlinson Griffes (1884-1920) to compose The Pleasure Dome of Kubla Kahn, based on the poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The composer originally wrote it for piano in 1912. Four years later, at the encouragement of Ferruccio Busoni, he expanded it into a shimmering symphonic poem. Following the first performance in the autumn of 1919 under the direction of Pierre Monteux, it achieved great success and remains one of his most frequently-performed works today. The work reveals the influence of French impressionism, meandering through the lush gardens of the legendary palace. This edition by Gregory Vaught is part of the Nieweg Performance Editions series. The three symphonic sketches La Mer are, after Prelude a Lapresmidi dun faune, no doubt Debussys most frequently performed orchestral work. This success derives in part from its formal resemblance to a symphony, which had already been noted by the composers contemporaries, and in part from its sound, which was associated from the very start with the shimmer and iridescence of Impressionism.Peter Jost takes all major sources into consideration. Ultimately, the musical text of his Urtext edition is based on a copy of the second edition of the score, published in 1909, in which the composer incorporated his experiences as auditor and conductor into a last authorized version. After the cool reception given La Mer at its world premiere, Debussy revised the work and conducted the extraordinarily successful performances of it in early 1908 in Paris,London and Rome.

First critical edition. Together with Debussy, Ravel, and Dukas, Lili Boulanger was one of the most important representatives of impressionism. Despite her short life of just 24 years, she developed a distinctive personal style, and composed a huge variety of works including songs, piano music, operatic scenes, and choral music, all with great inventiveness. The Hymne au soleil (Hymn to the sun) for mixed choir, alto solo, and piano, was written in 1912 to a poem by Casimir Delavigne. In ecstatic layers of chords the sun is acclaimed; through its power it brings the colors of the earth to light anew. The edition contains both the original French text, with a singable English translation underlaid.

Hans Winterberg has only recently been rediscovered as one of the most important representatives of the Czech avant-garde of the first half of the 20th century. Performed but not published during his lifetime, his works were locked away after his death due to tragic circumstances and are now being published for the first time in a collaboration between the Exilarte Centre of the Vienna University of Music and Boosey and Hawkes. In contrast to his colleagues and friends Ullmann, Haas, Krása and Klein, Winterberg survived the Shoah through a series of miracles. As a student of Alexander Zemlinsky and Alois Hába, he is both a successor to Janácek and a member of the wider circle of the Second Viennese School. The Sonata for Violin and Piano, written and premièred in Prague in 1936, is one of the most important chamber music works of the pre-war period. It exhibits all the characteristics of Winterberg's personal style: a sensuality of sound grounded in French Impressionism with a simultaneous expressionist rigour of harmony, a small-scale motivic structure, a sophisticated play with polyrhythmic patterns and, especially in the last movement, a musical impetus borrowed from Czech folklore.

Kurt Kaiser was the embodiment of what Harold Best once said about J.S. Bach - â??he could look at a blade of grass and see a universe.â? Kurt never stopped growing, believing, learning, and inspiring. He wore many hats and did so with humbleness of spirit and affirmation of all who came into his orbit. Kurt always made as much time for the impressionable young teenager as he did for famous artists with whom he collaborated. â??Come Awayâ? is a healing balm for these unsettling times.
