The choral collection Gospels and Spirituals transports us into the fascinating world of African American folk songs. Around 30 gospels and spirituals have been arranged for mixed choir, unaccompanied or with piano. The choral parts sometimes divide, and occasionally solo parts (or even a small choral group) are required. As well as American classics (e.g. Amazing grace, Go down Moses, Kumbaya, Deep river, Down by the riverside, Good News, O when the saints, Nobody knows, Joshua fit the battle of Jericho), the collection also contains some discoveries from the beginnings of the genre. Just under half the arrangements were specially commissioned for the collection. Blind Lemon Jefferson was a trail blazer, both as a singer and guitarist, but also as a commercial phenomenon, for he was the first blues musician to establish the tremendous appeal that blues, as played and sung by rural African American folk, had for the record-buying public. It is no exaggeration to say that the sales of Lemon’s records paved the way for a host of other solo rural blues musicians to record in his wake and made the record companies more willing to give other musicians a chance, in the hopes of achieving similar success. 

Lemon’s record sales weren’t what made him a great musician, though - that could only be attributed to his startlingly virtuosic guitar - playing and soulful singing, developed over years of busking, building on his natural gifts with a great deal of practice and work. In the Guitar of Blind Lemon Jefferson author John Miller presents transcriptions, in standard notation and tablature, of 22 of Lemon’s greatest performances, with an additional essay examining Lemon’s senses of time and phrasing and his picking techniques. To present a picture of Lemon the man, noted blues researchers Alan Governar and Kip Lornell have contributed an essay focusing on Lemon’s early life, the origins of his music, and his time spent in a musical partnership with Lead Belly. Deux Airs populaires cubains (Dos aires populares cubanos) and Deux Thèmes populaires cubains (Dos temas populares cubanos) were written in the 1960s and published by Éditions Max Eschig in 1972 and 1978. These two pieces belong to the genre of arrangements of popular songs for solo instruments that was a widespread presence in the plucked-string repertoire from the sixteenth century on. In these two cycles, Leo Brouwer reworks Cuban popular music with his usual instrumental originality. In the first cycle, Brouwer did not alter any of the melodic or structural elements of the original songs, only embellishing these with introductions, harmony, and some structure. In the second cycle however, the original dance was composed by Brouwer himself, imitating Cuban popular music characterised by both Spanish and African influences. Rather than being based on actual folk repertoire, it draws its inspiration from it and attempts to recreate its sonic ambiance. Zigante interventions, made on the scores published during the 1970s, consist of the correction of a few errors and restoring some of the original repeat signs as conceived by Brouwer. Any fingering indicationswere added by Leo Brouwer himself.
