Singapore Rhapsody is an exciting work in two movements based on popular Malaysian folksongs. The songs that occur in the first movement are Rasa Sayang eh (a love song), Gelang Sipaku Gelang (a song about community spirit), Suriram (a song about a girl proclaiming her virtues) and Di-Tanjung Katong (a love song that takes place at the Cape Katong on the southeast coast of Singapore). The second movement features Lenggang Kangkung, which literally means “The swaying of the watercress,†Katang Lompat (a moralistic song about the symbolism of the frog) and finally Kenek kenek-lah Udang (a wedding song). Each movement of this enchanting work can be performed separately but acomplete performance will be the crowning moment of any concert. The effective use of solo percussion, combined with an elegant orchestration, brought a warm reception at the premiere of this work from Satoshi Yagisawa’s ‘Concertino Series’. The renowned Japanese composer Satoshi Yagisawa was given three separate tasks for this commission: it should be a short, attractive piece of music that is easy to listen to; it should be suitable as a choral exercise; and it should be fitting as anencore for the regular annual concert of the client. So it was that Yagisawa composed a glorious, warm-sounding work that satisfies all three requirements, and additionally serves as an excellent intermezzo in any concert.De Japanse Satoshi Yagisawa moest rekening houden met drie voorwaarden: het moest een kort, aansprekend muziekstuk worden dat goed in het gehoor zou liggen; het moest geschikt zijn als koraaloefening; en het zou een passende toegift moeten zijn voorde jaarconcerten van het opdrachtgevende orkest. Robert van Beringen chose a classical theme for this funeral march. For this reason, within the trio of this melancholy piece we find echoes of Albinoni’s Adagio which - according to the latest research was actually composed by his biographer Remo Giazotto. Thanks to the four-part variable instrumentation (with ad lib. drums) this funeral march can be played by pretty much any ensemble - whether at a funeral on the way from the church to the cemetery, in the church itself or indeed on stage as part of a memorial concert.Robert van Beringen maakt in het trio van zijn Funeral March gebruik van de bekende melodie ‘Adagio van Albinoni’, en waarvan sinds kort blijkt dat het eigenlijk werd geschreven door Giazotto. Rimanendo quanto più possibile fedeli alla forma già esistente, priva sin dall’origine di una prefazione tecnica, si è lavorato, da aprile a oggi, a una nuova stesura definitiva, dando l’opportunità a tutti gli autori di rivedere i testi. Le sole modifiche riguardano aggiornamenti, integrazioni e post-scriptum.
