For Isang Yun, String Quartet No. 3 from 1959 marked the beginning of his European creative phase and of his official canon of works. Now it is possible to encounter Yun's early works from his Korean period in the form of his String Quartet No. 1 (1955). Three important 10-minute movements containing references not only to Asia but also to Ravel, Bartók and Eastern European folk musicand having an idiosyncratic structure: “Yun lines up forms and figures, makes them emerge from each other in a contrasting manner and assembles them into a mosaic-like whole, seeking for integration, laying down his material in layer upon layer and ending the movements with a rhythmic unison. [] Even then, he probably regarded a work of art as an energetic stream of sounds and as a reflection of a world whose diverging parts weave into a harmonic whole.” (Walter-Wolfgang Sparrer).

The mountain upon which has been carved the likeness of four of our Presidents serves as the inspiration for this concert overture. Block chords give spatial grandeur akin to the geographical local, and a stately melodic line signifies the national importance of the area. Easy to prepare and perform.

YT fills a great need in Orff classrooms--opportunities for intermediate grade students to extend their individual musicianship from basic, whole class activities, to individual creativity. To reach this goal, most of the 26 units in YT begin with a short, simple core activity (song, jump rope rhyme, poem) that can be easily learned. Next, students are given choices to expand the arrangement through one or more of six avenues (speech, gesture, movement, improvisation, tone color, form). Students create their own final product with as much individuality as they choose.

Only the text and the last page of the autograph score of the Christmas Cantata “Ehre sei Gott in der Höhe†BWV 197.1 (197a) have survived, beginning with the end of the 2nd aria. This, along with the complete surviving 3rd aria are found in parody versions in the Wedding Cantata BWV 197 / BWV3 197.2, from which this cantata takes its BWV number. For a long time there has been a fascinating theory about the missing opening chorus: could this have been the parody source for the Gloria in the Mass in B minor? The musicologist and organist Pieter Dirksen has pursued this, creating a four-part choral version largely derived from corrections made in the autograph of the Mass in B minor. He has underlaid this with the text of the opening chorus (the German translation of the Gloria). What results is a convincing version of the Christmas Cantata – with one of Bach’s best-known choruses as the prominent opening chorus and plausible solutions for the other sections missing in the autograph.

As its title suggests, Farewell at Dawn is a musical expression of bidding farewell to the night and beginning a new day. The piece opens softly with a gentle motive that evolves through simple, yet expressive material. A short quasi-canon provides a transition for a climax that resolves peacefully using the original musical motive. This is a piece with a mature, lyrical sound that can be performed by the youngest of bands. (1:45).

Four roads lead to Santiago, so begins the Book of the Pilgrim. Written in the 12th century, the Codex Calixtinus opened the way for pilgrimage from most cities in Europe and North Africa to Santiago de Compostela, in Spain. Compostela - The Way of St James describes the pilgrims' journey. After a slow introduction, a brilliant theme announces the start of the journey. The arrival in Spain is indicated by incantatory chants and majestic chords. Finally, the music softens as the pilgrims venerate St James. The Banquet of Light is an easily accessible piece which takes itsinspiration from ?light? both in terms of it representing good news andjoy together with scenes inspired by light, such as a sunset over water, fireworks lighting up the sky and sunlight as it streams through a thickforest. Banquet of Light will bring a ray of light to any concert. The Banquet of Light s’ouvre dans une atmosphère éclatante.

Ludwig van Beethoven composed his Elegiac Song in memory of Eleonore Pasqualati, the wife of his long-standing friend and patron Johann Baptist Freiherr von Pasqualati zu Osterberg, who died young. The short choral piece, alternating between quiet pain and drama and with a discreet string accompaniment, was published for the first time in 1826. In addition to the vocal and string parts, there is a piano part which can be used as an alternative to the strings. This piano part is used as the basis of the Carus vocal score. A performance with just chorus and piano is therefore possible - although not the original version, this was one which was widespread from the beginning. Score and part available separately - see item CA.1039600.

Marchissimo will make a fantastic opening piece for any concert. It does however come with a twist! It can be played simply as written, but is really designed to be â??stagedâ?? with players coming on the concert platform one by one as they begin to play. The piece actually consists of three marches in one, each of which highlights a section of the band. The piece culminates in a final climax where all three march themes are played simultaneously.
