The Adagio is based on a manuscript that was discovered in the Dresden State Library after the Second World War by Remo Giazotto, a Milanese musicologist who was working on Albinoni’s biography at the time. Only the bass line and six bars of melody were found and they probably belonged to the slow movement of a Trio Sonata. In 1945 Giazotti reconstructed the now famous Adagio which has made Albinoni known to a worldwide audience.

Debussy's friendship with the versatile poet and playwright Gabriel Mourey began in 1899, and in July 1907 Mourey offered Debussy a libretto based on Le roman de Tristan - Joseph Bedier's adaptation of a twelfth-century Breton romance by the Anglo-Norman poet known as Thomas - which had recently been published in Paris. Debussy enthusiastically outlined the four-act plot to Victor Segalen that October, and the main differences from Wagner's Tristan und Isolde are that none of the action takes place in Cornwall and that Isolde of the White Hands is found guilty of cuckolding King Marc with Tristan, who has to rescue her from the leper colony in which she is abandoned in Act 1. She also betrays him when he goes mad at the end.The idea of a Tristan that restored its 'legendary character' and had no connections with Wagner, appealed to Debussy, who was extremely moved by the circumstances of Tristan's death. Even if he thought that Mourey's poetry was 'not very lyrical and many passages do not exactly invite music', he did work on the libretto and the music that summer and sent his publisher, Jacques Durand, 'one of the 363 themes for the Roman de Tristan' in a letter sent from Pourville on 23 August, 1907. The present prelude grows from this theme, together with the poignant Breton folksong Le Faucon. After a short atmospheric introduction, Debussy's dance-like theme (which is definitely not a leitmotif) gradually gains momentum and after it reaches its ecstatic climax, representing the transient happiness of the lovers, it dissolves into an expressive coda and an elegiac close (all growing from Debussy's opening, off-stage trumpet calls), leaving us with the ultimate tragedy of their ill-fated affair.Unfortunately, Mourey's actual libretto has been lost and the project eventually foundered because Bedier's cousin, Louis Artus, wanted Debussy to use the scenario he had prepared and copyrighted for the stage, and would not allow him to proceed with Mourey's version. Debussy, it need hardly be said, would never have dreamed of collaborating with the author of the vaudeville hit La culotte (The pants)!

The Intermezzo & Farandole are both from the 2nd L'Arlesienne Suite arranged by Guiraud in 1879, four years after Bizet's untimely death. The Intermezzo is slow and powerful, whereas the Farandole, which incorporates the theme from the March of the Kings is fast and bouncy.Mr. Sauer's arrangement is a joy to perform. The 6-minute suite of two movements is appropriate for moderately advanced performers and does not have any range or endurance challenges.

“Gordon Wright was the friend of a lifetime. For thirty years Gordon and I shared our two greatest passions: music and Alaska. Gordon was my musical collaborator, my next-door neighbor, my fellow environmentalist and my camping buddy. These miniatures are musical sketches of three moments and places in our friendship. Like Alaska, Gordon was larger than life. He always lived his own way. And he died just as he would have wanted. We found him lying on the deck of his cabin in the Chugach Mountains, curled up against his favorite birch tree, looking across the waters of Turnagain Arm toward the Resurrection Valley and the tiny settlement of Hope.” - John Luther AdamsThis music contains no normal stopped tones. All the sounds are produced as natural harmonics or on open strings. There are no harmonics higher than the sixth. So these sounds should be clear and resonant. Even so, balancing the harmonics with the open strings requires careful attention. The durations of the individual pieces are given at the end of each. The total duration of the set is about ten minutes.

Given the many demanding disciplines involved in achieving a solid 'sound' on the trumpet, it's easy to understand why most trumpet methods concentrate on breath control/ support, range and endurance- and attention to air/finger coordination is often overlooked. The purpose of these exercises is to challenge and develop greater finger strength, speed and flexibility. For best results, practice these exercises in strict tempo - with a metronome - making sure that you push the valves down firmly. As you master, increase tempo in small increments. Always keep your air stream supported and sing through the entire exercise. Remember, the last note is as important (if not, more) as the first!

This melody is answered contrapuntally by the celli, and develops into a web of repeated melodic phrases. The middle section is very rhythmic, highlighting the percussion section and making use of many polyrhtyhms. A soft tremolo begins to emerge in the strings and gradually evolves into the foreground material. A repeated note theme enters in the celli and is answered sequentially by each string section. A strong statement of the original theme in the trumpets and violins climaxes the movement. --N.G.

Imagination mixed with local authenticity are among the hallmarks of the legendary Argentinian composer and guitarist Pujol. TRES PIEZAS VIAJERAS is clothed as a travelogue, yet it is also a dance suite bringing together the main musical genres of the Rio de la Plata district of Buenos Aires. The “Bremen†movement (composed in Germany) is a modern tango, “Pesadumbre†is a slow milonga (an older folk dance that gave rise to tango), and the “Ezeiza†movement is an urbanized treatment of the candombe dance, known for its dizzying speed. Each movement may be played separately as well as in the complete setting making this work a versatile and stimulating addition to the repertoire.TRES PIEZAS VIAJERAS (Three Traveling Pieces) emerged during a trip to Germany in 2021. Its three movements bring together the three musical genres of the Rio de la Plata area: Tango, Milonga, and Candombe. “Bremen†is a characteristic modern tango written on a bass line that “walks†the heaviness of an urban and warm rhythm. “Pesadumbre†(Sorrow) is an air in Milonga Campera style (Milonga from the countryside), in a slow tempo, portraying the lethargy of a melancholy siesta. “Ezeiza†(a town near the international airport in Buenos Aires) is an air in Candombe style: an urban Candombe of great rhythmic vivacity. It presents a rhythm that at times bumps into itself and, at other times, reaches an extremely fast, dizzying, and violent rhythm.
