Aulos to a certain degree continues Orbán's easy piano pieces for children, which he composed for Ãgnes Lakos's piano tutor and which Editio Musica Budapest published in a separate volume entitled Enchanted Forest in 2011 (Z. 14742). Yet on this occasion the composer took on something which was both significantly different and more than his earlier pieces for children. On the one hand, he did not compose for beginners but for more advanced students who have studied piano for at least three years. On the other, he did not set developing the technique of piano playing as an aim, rather a systematic presentation of different polyphonic genres and compositional procedures(imitation, fugue, stretto, inversion, augmentation and diminution, double counterpoint, latent polyphony, double and triple fugue, cantus firmus technique, etc.). Orbán introduces his students to the mysteries of polyphony in a direct and practical manner, and thus actually makes them familiar with the art of composition. The educational use of the series is significantly increased by the fact that before each piece the composer presents and clarifies with demonstrative illustrations the polyphonic procedure he introduces. Orbán's explanations are not text-book-like at all, but are deliberately personal and subjective, full of lessons and individual associations taken from his practice as a composer. They were written in the same spirit as the works themselves - while they perfectly fulfil their educational purpose they are equally individual, witty and inspired pieces of music that are a joy to play. From the autumn of 1864, Liszt accepted the invitation of Cardinal Gustav Adolf zu Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst almost every year to spend a few days or weeks at the Villa d'Este in Tivoli near Rome. He often received visitors there from Rome besides Liszt and his pupils the liberal-minded, cultured prelate also attracted representatives of the intellectual elite. This extraordinary place not only became Liszt's favourite dwelling-place in Italy but also inspired him to write several works for piano, which he published in 1883 in the third volume of Années de pélerinage. One of these is Les jeux d'eaux á la Villa d'Este, composed in 1877, which would become one of the most popularpieces by Liszt. This revised (2020) edition adopts the score and the critical report of the New Liszt Edition (amending it, if necessary). In addition, it includes a preface in German and English, that explores the genesis of the work on the basis of current research, and orients the reader in issues of notation. This publication is printed on high-quality, age-resistant paper that is produced in an environmentally-friendly, climate-neutral manner using renewable raw materials.

The episode from Ovid'sMetamorphosesin which Daphne attempts to escape Apollo's advances by turning into a laurel tree, causing the devastated god to weave a laurel crown in memory of the nymph, has inspired the masterworks of many artists. Gian Lorenzo Bernini, whose famous marble sculpture is housed in the Galleria Borghese in Rome, is only one example of this. Many composers set this myth to music including young George Frideric Handel with his grand-scale dramatic cantataApollo e Dafne. The composer started working on the work shortly before leaving Italy in 1709, most likely finishing it the following year in Hanover.Barenreiter now presents a vocal score of the opera-like cantata, the highlights of which include Dafne's ariaFelicissima quest'alma(accompanied by solo oboe) and Apollo's famous lamentCara pianta.

Simon Laks (1901-1983), who came from an assimilated Jewish family in Warsaw, composed arrangements of both Jewish and Christian folk songs which captivate by their subtle piano writing. His Eight Jewish Folk Songs from 1947, composed two years after his liberation from the Auschwitz death camp, are classics of the repertoire. Another real gem is his version of the Polish Christmas carol Jezusek (Little Jesus), which was rediscovered only recently as part of the complete recording of Laks' songs. Still very popular in Poland today, the pastorale with the original title Oj maluski, maluski originates from the Podhale region of southern Poland. Laks' piano accompaniment is especially enchanting, with its canonically treated secondary part and cleverly used chromatic suspensions and passing notes, which allude to the future suffering of Christ without taking away any of the melody's warmth. HolgerGroschopp, who has been studying the works of Simon Laks as an interpreter and arranger for a long time, let himself be inspired by Laks' artful arrangement and wrote the present free arrangement as a 'song without words'.

John Blanken composed his traditional style concert march Liberty was composed in 2004. The first performance took place during a concert in which the theme was the struggle for independence and during the concert the audience sang the song of independence from large banners situated on both sides of the both. This grandiose yet lyrical march will open your concert in a truly liberating manner.

Etudes are not popular with everyone - but you can't do without them: The Etude (from French exercise) deals with technical problems in a concentrated form (fluency, chord playing, staccato, independence of the hands, etc.) and helps the player to improve his technique develop effectively and problem-oriented. To make the whole thing fun, Hans-Gunter Heumann deliberately chose studies that are not only technically useful, but also musically appealing. In the appendix, the volume contains an overview of all major and minor scales, as well as recordings of all pieces.

Like many composers who found themselves in exile during the war years, Castelnuovo-Tedesco composed in a very neoclassical and neoromantic style, reviving more traditional or antiquated ideas of melody, tonality and texture. His collection of Shakespeare Songs feature settings of verse from across the full range of the Bard's plays, and have proved to be great critical successes still widely performed today. Suitable to be adapted by most voices. the songs are interwoven with complex and thrilling Piano accompaniments that bring colour and energy to the often liberally edited texts. Book nine contains three songs adapted from As You Like It, A Winter's Tale and Much Ado About Nothing.

How often has something been justified by, declared to be, or blessed as “in the name of†some cause or other? How can it be that opposing armies and the use of weapons are ever “in the name ofâ€...? This is a common thread in the history of different faiths. Good was created but evil was committed and all “in the name of...†This thread is also found in the history of the Premonstratensian Abbey at Wadgassen. The abbey was built in the 12th century on unfertile, desolate moorland, which later evolved into the most powerful religious community in the Saarland. The history of the abbey records quite astounding achievements under the motto desertum florebit quasi lilium (“the desert will bloom like a lilyâ€); but also the harsh treatment of delinquents. The order had its own school, in which children were taught the seven liberal arts (which included music as well as geography and astronomy), but the poor were left to starve outside the abbey walls and were only allowed to eat from the members' on feast days. The medieval witch trials demanded their pound of flesh, and one group that fell victim were ecstatic dancers who moved wildly to music--which was interpreted as the devil's work. The result: a show trial that sentenced the dancers to death by fire. All in the name of... The year is 1789: Abbot Bordier is in the tenth year of his command. He does not yet know that he is to be the last abbot of an almost 700-year-tradition. Not far from the abbey is the French border, which has long been making itself felt with the sound of gunfire, and the brothers continue to keep a nervous eye on it. The first portents of the French Revolution loom, but no one wants to believe it--that is, until the French pound the door down, storm the abbey and come right into the brothers' chambers. In a blind fury, all the pipes of the abbey organ are torn out, icons beheaded with swords and brothers beaten death while numerous buildings are set on fire. The abbey church is in flames. A frantic and desperate escape begins. Abbot Bordier and a handful of brothers make their getaway via the River Saar, adjacent to the abbey, to the neighbouring village of Bous. They survive, but their life--the Premonstratensian abbey--is destroyed. While they flee towards Prague and the sanctuary of the Strahov Monastery, the abbey at Wadgassen is razed to the ground and becomes a stone quarry. The desert blooms once more, however. A few short decades later, a glasswork arises from the foundations of the abbey. As peace returns to the region, it brings jobs and a new vision for its people.
