Nocturnes have a long tradition - from the notturni by Mozart and Haydn via the nocturnes of the Romantic era to Chopin who elevated the genre to fascinating character piece: He created ambivalently shining gems in an unreal world of human nature which were as close to the extremely sublime as to a demonic abyss. Enjott Schneider's '3 Nocturnes', the core of each of which is characterized by a Latin motto, stand in this tradition. Cicero's 'Somnus est imago mortus' sees sleep as a resemblance of death. 'Die Zeit eilt weg, die Liebe aber bleibt' [Time passes but love remains] explores the ambivalence between that what is hurrying and that what stays eternally. Ovid's 'Der Tropfen hohlt den Stein nicht durch Kraft, sondern durch stetes Fallen' [The drop hollows the stone, not by force but by constant dripping] has its counterpart in a minimalist motif which has a lasting influence on the listener through its constant sounding.

String Quartet (1985) - In memoriam Urmas Kibuspuu. This impressive two-movement string quartet by the popular young Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Tuur (b. 1959) displays minimalist influences. The most pronounced ostinato tendencies are in the first violin, which repeats the same motif for several bars while the other instruments accompany it with their own recurring motifs. Released on the BIS label, the quartet is dedicated to the memory of a friend of Tuur's, the Estonian actor Urmas Kibuspuu.

Electric Blue was created for the New Music Ensemble Aachen and premiered at the Blue(s) Planet festival there. The piece impresses with its minimalist sound structures, whose ascending and descending scales are imitated and continuously developed by the various instruments. Anno Schreier composes new and very own harmonic sound worlds, which, detached from advanced artistic influences, show their own answers to the questions of new music.

This is that special piece for your special choir: a tonal, a cappella, double chorus tour de force of minimalist techniques that sounds like...the desert! This piece repays careful study: the conductor who helps the singers identify repeated patterns, and the relation of each part to its counterpart in the other chorus, will accelerate the learning process. Your reward is four sections of differing programmatic effects, to be performed as one long movement. 1. Pyramid Lake (SSAA/SSAA a cappella; duration: 1’30; range: g-e; difficulty: medium-difficult). 2. Kevin Volans' String Quartet No. 9: Shiva Dances was commissioned by BBC Radio 3 and first performed by the Smith Quartet at the 2004 Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.Kevin Volans (the composer) notes on the piece:In the past I have been interested in trying to go beyond historicism (1970s), beyond style(1980s) and beyond form (1990s) in my work. Looking back over the music of the twentiethcentury I was struck by the fact the nearlyall of it is extremely 'busy', almost cluttered. Italmost seemed that composers felt compelled to look industrious. In the new millennium Ithought it would be interesting to try and eliminate content. I also aspired to movingfrommusic (sound as art) to art (art as sound). This, of course, has already been done by a numberof composers (many from New York - Phil Niblock and La Monte Young, to name but two), butit was something I had never tried.AlthoughI found it annoying that the label 'minimalist' was given to my African-based work, and fearing this would make the label stick, I set out to write a piece which reflected my loveof minimal painting and architecture. The Japanesehave a term 'wabi' meaning 'voluntarypoverty' or 'emptiness' to describe their restrained minimal aesthetic, an aesthetic which, however, pays greatest attention to the quality of material and fine detail. I like to think thatthelack of excessive pitch material in this piece reflects a kind of voluntary poverty. When Shiva is portrayed dancing (as Nataraj) He is depicted in a circle of flames crushing asmall figure - the ego - underfoot. You get theimpression He dances on the spot, not movingaround at all. I like that. The piece is dedicated to Pablo Pascual Cilleruelo.

Ghost in the Machine has characteristics of minimalist music and utilizes many interesting sounds, colors and textures to create a mechanized sound. This piece is a great way to introduce students to the important minimalistic style and has enough musical sophistication to keep students and audiences on the edge of their seats.

This short, metaphorical work captures the moment when a person casts a summative glance over the past, takes final leave of all that has happened and peers with cautious hope into the future, which will perhaps be better than the time now being left behind. This minimalist tribute was composed for the fortieth birthday of the painter Hans Nopper, even though it makes use of extremely restricted resources, it bears within it the possibility of catharsis. Emily Dickinson's two poems entitled Ending and Dawn provide the ideal backdrop for an experience that begins in darkness and ends in a burst of light and mystery. Meredith Tompkins' interpretation of the two texts centers on the multi-faceted meanings of each poem, exploring themes of lost youth, leaving home, mortality, destiny and hope. Audiences and choirs alike will experience Dickinson's poignant words through haunting melodies, vivid text-painting, dynamic contrast, minimalist soundscapes and melodic layering that gradually builds to intense and thought-provoking conclusions.Ending:That is solemn we have ended, —Be it but a play,Or a glee among the garrets,Or a holiday,Or a leaving home; or later,Parting with a worldWe have understood, for betterStill it be unfurled. Dawn:Not knowing when the dawn will comeI open every door;Or has it feathers like a bird,Or billows like a shore?

Written for the 1999 Wisconsin Honors Jazz Ensemble, this tune combines a powerful hip-hop groove, hard-hitting ensemble figures, unique harmonies, compelling minimalist features, and a touch of humor in a musical salute to Green Bay Packers legend Ray Nitschke. Brass ranges are reasonable, and highly accessible improvisation showcases for tenor sax and trumpet are included. The alternating 4/4 and 2/4 bars throughout may seem a little intimidating at first, but will fall into place quickly.
