It was the practice of Khoomii (throat singing) - following several workshops with Michael Ormiston - that first attracted me to Tuvan music. Composing this Songbook, the first in a series commissioned by the Ligeti Quartet, I took the chance to reflect on compositional questions around transcription and arrangement of existing music, and frequently found myself asking: where is the boundary between the source material and the new substance? Of course the relationship varies from piece to piece, and moment to moment: sometimes we seem to glimpse the pure source, but most of the time there are differing degrees of distance, working towards or away from it. This new version for string orchestra corresponds closely to the original quartet version, with an additional part for double basses. The traditional Tuvan songs that I have transcribed and recomposed are all known to me from the Ay Kherel CD The Music of Tuva: Throat Singing and Instruments from Central Asia (2004, Arc Music). According to the notes from that CD, this is what the songs are about:1. Dyngylday: If you have come on a horse in blue, it doesn't mean that you are the best. My heart tells me something else: my sweetheart doesn't have such a beautiful horse, but he is my darling. An alternative interpretation from Alash Ensemble (alashensemble.com): The word dyngylday is a nonsense term with no translation. The song makes good-humored fun of somebody for being a good-for-nothing.2. Eki Attar (The Best Steeds): The horse is the basis of our life. It is a magic creature. Even its step is full of music and rhythm. You may not be a horse rider, but when you hear this song you will always remember horses.3. Kuda Yry: This wedding song glorifies the strength of the groom and the beauty of his Horse.4. Ezir-Kara ('Black Eagle'): This was the name of a horse, who became a legend through his remarkable strength and speed. It is not just overtones that abound here: there are galloping rhythms aplenty, and though I am no horse rider I tried to keep the horses galloping in my imagination while composing these pieces.Christian Mason (with quotes from Ay Kherel and Alash Ensemble)

Published by Carl Fischer Music (CF.CPS225). ISBN 9781491152515. UPC: 680160910014. Tartan Tapestries is an original piece that sets out to emulate Scottish folk music. Composer Larry Clark has created a concert overture in triple meter to capture the essence of music from Scotland. After a lilting first section, lush and beautiful moments weave a tapestry of sounds with the lyrical, middle section of the piece. There is an optional part for bagpipes, and an optional ending should you chose to use this instrument as part of the piece. Alert your contest music committee about this strong new piece for advancing groups. Tartan Tapestries was commissioned by Friends of the Arts for the Saint Andrew's School Band in Boca Raton, Florida. The band program at Saint Andrew’s School is under the direction of Andrea Wolgin. The premiere took place on November 29, 2017.When I was asked by their conductor Ms. Wolgin to write a piece for the Saint Andrew’s School, I asked her what kind of involvement she wanted the students to have in the process. We discussed several options for having the students involved in the process of creating with the type of piece they wanted. We set up a “Skype†meeting with members of the band to discuss the piece. During this discussion, the consensus of the students was that they wanted a piece depicting the Scottish influence to the school. They also wanted a piece that would challenge all sections of the band and to include bagpipes if possible. I asked that the students be involved in helping to name the piece once it was completed, for which they agreed and were very helpful. Armed with this information, I set out to compose a piece for them, and Tartan Tapestries is the result. The piece begins with a fanfare gesture based upon rhythms and harmonies that appear throughout the piece. I chose the lilting triple feel to the piece, to bring about the Scottish flavor. I wanted the fanfare to be bardic sounding, to depict the strength of the Scottish people and for the piece to have a dynamic opening. The fanfare contains material that alludes to the main theme and with a bit of dissonance and tension that is resolved in the main body of the piece. The main theme is a lilting original melody, but one that I hope with have the essence of Scottish folk songs. The main idea is followed by a more modal and dark sounding secondary theme, first stated in the horns. This material is later used in the development section of the piece. The main theme returns several times, with different and varied orchestrations and harmonic treatments. This is followed by a short transition leading to the more lyrical and slower second section of the piece. A transparent presentation of the lyrical theme, which is based on aspects of the main theme, is presented first by a solo flute. This section is a nod to famous composer Malcom Arnold’s wonderful works for orchestra in its style and orchestration. After a transition or bridge section with a solo euphonium, the piece builds to a dramatic climax of the lyrical theme by the full band. This subsides to a return of the solo flute to end this second section of the piece, followed by a transition back the main theme. The solo bagpipes play a central role in the return of the main theme and take center stage after being heard in the distance earlier in the work. The piece brings back a shortened version of the darker secondary theme, followed by a hint of the fanfare material that builds to one last statement of the main theme by the full band, before leading to a dramatic coda to complete the work.It has been my pleasure to have been given the opportunity to compose this piece for the Saint Andrew’s School Band! I thank Andrea Wolgin for making it happen, and I hope that you enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed bringing the piece to life.–Larry ClarkLakeland, Florida 2017. $95.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

A driving composition from Sean O'loughlin,?Commence!?begins with a spirited theme that oscillates between triple and duple meter. After developing into a heartfelt lush brass chorale, the lilting theme returns again. The composition concludes with a dramatic return of the B theme and a rousing finale. A beautiful piece,?Commence!?is a?strong choice for any contest or festival.
Commence! was commissioned by the Lynden High School Class 2017-2019 and the Lynden, WA Community, and is dedicated to Steve Herrick in celebration of his retirement. Mr. Herrick and I first collaborated on a commission in 2006, and I was immediately taken by the community and the music program in Lynden. It is truly one of the most beautiful places in the country and full of musical inspiration at every turn. This piece is a loving tribute to Mr. Herrick and his amazing contribution to the students of Lynden for over thirty years. The music begins with a spirited section oscillating between 6/8 and 2/4 time. It should maintain a pulsing feeling throughout. The main melody appears at m. 25 and has a lilting, reminiscing quality to it. After some further development, it moves to a B-section at m. 41 with some warm brass passages. The woodwinds should soar over the top with their counter line. The lower voices take over the melody at m. 59. The harmony becomes more discordant at m. 71 with passages trading between the brass and woodwinds. This tension releases into a slow section that features a flowing, heartfelt melody. This builds to the big moment at m. 112. The timpani ushers us back to the 6/8, 2/4 section. The melody is now accompanied by some flowing counterpoint at m. 153 which leads to the B-section again at m. 169. This time the woodwinds take the lead and the brass provide the counter line. A final big moment at m. 194 is the culmination and high point of the composition. A brief fast section puts a bow on the piece for a rousing finale. . Concert Band/Harmonie - Grade 4 SKU: BT.GOB-000712-140 Composed by Jan Bosveld. Score Only. 40 pages. Gobelin Music Publications #GOB 000712-140. Published by Gobelin Music Publications (BT.GOB-000712-140). The Egyptian pharaoh Amenhotep IV, better known as Achnaton, was the second son and successor of Amenhotep III. He reigned the New Kingdom from 1353 until 1336 BC. Achnatons lack of interest in the economic well-being of Egypt ushered ina revolutionary period in Egyptian history. His harsh reign induced much suffering under the population. During this period when it was customary for a pharaoh to have many wives, he had taken his cousin Nefertete to reign as queen at hisside. An elegant and very beautiful woman, she used her influence to ease the turmoil caused by Achnaton. Combined with her grace, her presence at public functions led to a greater popularity among her subjects than the pharaoh enjoyedhimself. Being mostly preoccupied with religious questions, he declared that all the other gods did not exist. There was only one god, the Aten, and it was the sun itself. It was now necessary to change his name: ‘Amenhotep’ meaning ‘the god Amun is satisfied’, because he didnt want to be associated with Amun or any of the other deities. He renamed himself ‘Achnaton’ which means ‘servant of the Aten’ -- a much more appropriate title! In the sixth year of his reignAchnaton also moved the capital to a brand new city called Achet-Aton (‘the Horizon of the Aten’) which was where Tel el-Amarna stands today. He did this to further isolate himself from the ‘old’ religion, since the previous capital Thebes was thecentre of worship of Amun. This new religion created an up rise among the population and high priests. In spite of Nefertetes influence, the falling economy and religious conflict resulted in the decline of the Egyptian empire. Hoping toforget it ever happened, people later tried to eradicate all traces of Achnaton and his successors rule by smashing their statues, mutilating their mummies, and ruining their relief carvings. From that moment on he was remembered as the‘heretic king’.

$38.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Concert Band/Harmonie - Grade 2.5 SKU: BT.DHP-1175782-010 Suite for Concert Band. Composed by Jacob De Haan. Concert and Contest Collection CBHA. Concert Piece. Set (Score & Parts). Composed 2017. De Haske Publications #DHP 1175782-010. Published by De Haske Publications (BT.DHP-1175782-010). English-German-French-Dutch. This 4-movement suite tells the story of the beautiful French town ‘Tulle’ that was built on seven hills, just like Rome and Lisbon. The composer depicts the history of the town, as well as important events such as the bloodbath during World War II, the fabric ‘tulle’ after which the town is named and the festive annual fair. Since Tulle is also known for the production of accordions, the composer added an ‘ad libitum’ accordion part. A really charming and stylish concert or contest work!

Concert Band/Harmonie - Grade 4 SKU: BT.DHP-0910329-010 Composed by Jan V...(+)
Concert Band/Harmonie - Grade 4 SKU: BT.DHP-0910329-010 Composed by Jan Van der Roost. Inspiration Series. Set (Score & Parts). Composed 1991. De Haske Publications #DHP 0910329-010. Published by De Haske Publications (BT.DHP-0910329-010). This quiet piece with its broad tones was originally written for brass band on request of Robert Leveugle, chairman of the composers own band: Brass Band Midden Brabant (Belgium). The direct cause was a visit to the beautiful cathedral of theEnglish city Canterbury, in which so many fine compositions sounded throughout the centuries. Later on, Jan Van der Roost rescored this piece for symphonic wind band, exploring the full richness of colours of this formation. Besides solo phrases forseveral instruments, there are some massive tutti passages making the wind orchestra sound like a majestic organ. By the way: an ad libitum organ part adds an extra richness, colour and power to this piece, making it sound even more broad andgrand.

From the call of the open seas to the wistful dance section, this piece will open the imagination of your students and audiences.  Very playable by young bands, the piece features a short opening ostinato that develops into a tone cluster and leads to the ominous sounds of the brass and percussion, which depict the slow lumbering ship on the dangerous, open waters. The piece continues through a more lyrical second section before a dramatic return of the opening material to close out this contest/festival style piece. From the call of the open seas to the wistful dance section, this piece will open the imagination of your students and audiences. Very playable by young bands, the piece features a short opening ostinato that develops into a tone cluster. This leads to the ominous sounds of the brass and percussion, which depict the slow lumbering ship on the dangerous, open waters. After a quickly paced melody in the low register for the clarinets, the piece gives way to an exciting tutti section that features horns and saxes on an answering countermelody. The second section is a dance that starts with low reeds and a flute solo, but develops into a full band Spanish-sounding dance, with melody in many different places. The recap is a reverse of the beginning section and again loosely represents the danger of life on the high seas. The short ostinato that is used at the beginning and in some transitional moments is based on the beginning notes of Irish Tune from County Derry, a favorite of J. C. Sykes, who this piece honors. Mr. Sykes gave a lifetime to teaching music to band students in North Carolina. The first four notes in clarinet 1, the first four in flute 1 and the first four in clarinet 2 make up the first phrase from that beautiful melody. Just something to get students thinking about composition in a new way. $95.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 24 hours - In Stock

| Romantic Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra - Advanced Cherry Classics
Trombone and strings and piano - advanced SKU: CY.CC2869 Composed by Jan ...(+)
Trombone and strings and piano - advanced SKU: CY.CC2869 Composed by Jan Freidlin. Contemporary. Solo part, Strings and Piano. Published by Cherry Classics (CY.CC2869). Jan Freidlin's lush and beautiful Romantic Concerto for Trombone, Piano and Strings was composed in 2004 and is in the traditional three movements. The 15-minute work is appropriate for advanced performers. A 4 1/2 minute sample of the Concerto (on our site) is beautifully performed by the Odessa Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, Conductor Igor Shavruk and Trombone solist Andrei Sokolov. Below is what the composer has written about his work: Written in 2004 , this composition combines three contrasting movements, however their style is not typical of a classical concerto, nor of a romantic work. The 1st movement - Moderato has a long recitative-like introduction performed by the soloist over a background of aleatoric sounds of divisi strings. The tonality is indefinite with many harmonic changes.

The music gradually builds up more and more leading the listener to the 2nd movement - Vivace energico in which the Piano makes its first appearance, adding rhythmic complexity. In the 2nd movement the main motive from the 1st movement is reintroduced and the mood gains in intensity with various syncopated rhythmic phrases as the orchestra and solo Trombonist accelerate together into a major climax.

With the energy drained out of the music by the conclusion of the 2nd movement the listener is brought to the 3rd movement - Adagietto. This movement is absolutely lyrical, elegiac and unexpectedly tonal. Its main melody has an atmosphere of nostalgia leading to the emotional center of the whole work, the softest climax of the Concerto . The soloist plays it in many tonalities, then gradually this warm wave eases, leaving the listener in a cathartic condition.
The Concerto contains many virtuosic moments for the soloist that sound very expressive and heroic. Jan Freidlin

| Ubi caritas Choral SATB [Score] Carus Verlag
SATB choir SKU: CA.965300 Antiphon for Holy Thursday. Composed by ...(+)
SATB choir SKU: CA.965300 Antiphon for Holy Thursday. Composed by Ko Matsushita. Edited by Stefan Schuck. Contemporary Choir Music. Sacred vocal music, Holy Week. Full score. Composed 2014. 4 pages. Duration 3 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 09.653/00. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.965300). ISBN 9790007164881. Language: Latin. For the moving moment in the Good Friday liturgy, when the priest symbolically washes the feet of several people thereby recalling the thoughtful, loving gesture of Christ at the Last Supper, the Christian church provides a specially intimate, conciliatory text in the antiphon Ubi caritas. Matsushita's composition sets this text quite simply to reflect this moment in a beautiful motet, which is both charming and grateful to sing. In an entirely tonal setting in F major, with chromatic accents sparingly employed, he uses elements from organum and pedal points to create tonally atmospheric expanses contrasting with the syllabic setting which runs throughout. In his writing he uses unisons, thirds and contrary motion, spanning quasi-Gregorian melodies. Matsushita sets the three verses of the hymn usually set nowadays, and these also divide the composition. Each verse is introduced with the ascending pentatonic motif Ubi caritas, but the melody is transformed according to the text and expresses the immeasurable joy of the glory of God in the third verse in a brief forte outburst with leaps of a fifth, before the composition concludes with a final Ubi caritas and an Amen lost in reverie. voice range: S: c' - f'' / A1:adeg - es'' / A2: gdeg - b' / T: fdeg - f' / B1: B - des' / B2: F - a'. $4.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Canyonland Skies is a programmatic work which was composed for the 2013 Utah/American String Teachers Association (ASTA) composition competition. The required element for the contest was that the entry should have a theme based on something native to the state of Utah. This original work attempts to represent the brilliance of the Utah sky; the clearest blue by day, with its blinding bright sun and the deepest dark blue of night, with a palette of stars which are breathtaking. The sunrise and sunset scenarios are uniquely remarkable from wherever one may be observing. At any one moment or another, these magnificent visions of color are always fresh and different.Canyonland Skies uses the bright key of D major to maximize the sonority of the string instruments. Excellent opportunities for drone-like intonation practices abound. Scalewise passages build and build for the strong harmonic changes which drive the piece to a contrasting section.G major dominates the jaunty middle section, which suggests a smooth ride on an open road. Melodic opportunities abound while the piece soars to a satisfying reflection of the opening material.Canyonland Skies is the winning Composition of the 2013 Composition Contest sponsored by the Utah Chapter of the American String Teachers Association.Sit back and begin a road trip with your students. With your navigation they will create a soundtrack for this beautiful journey. | Fantasia on Christmas Carols [Score] - Intermediate Carl Fischer
Orchestra Cello, Contrabass, Viola, Violin 1, Violin 2 - Grade 4 SKU: CF.SAS3...(+)
Orchestra Cello, Contrabass, Viola, Violin 1, Violin 2 - Grade 4 SKU: CF.SAS3F Composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Arranged by Todd Parrish. Sws. Cas. Full score. 16 pages. Carl Fischer Music #SAS3F. Published by Carl Fischer Music (CF.SAS3F). ISBN 9781491157534. UPC: 680160916115. 9 x 12 inches. Written in 1912, the Fantasia on Christmas Carols was originally scored for baritone solo, chorus, and orchestra. In it, Ralph Vaughan Williams used three folk carols from his native country of England: The Truth Sent from Above, Come all you Worthy Gentlemen, and the Sussex Carol. Though shortened for time, this arrangement contains moments from each carol, including the solo cello opening. Though the melodies are mostly of unknown origin, the harmonies are uniquely the work of Vaughan Williams. This medley offers a unique alternative to traditional holiday programming, combining beautiful English carols with the skill of a world-renowned composer. $10.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks
