What You Can Do for the World is a fun, spirited, light-hearted but meaningful dialog between the two choruses, and between the sections within the choruses. They are sometimes in agreement, sometimes slightly at odds.It is critical that chorus I and chorus II are placed separately on stage so the audience experiences, as much as possible, the sensation of one chorus in their left ear and the other in the right.The hand-offs of parts from chorus to chorus, and from section to section within each chorus, should be seamless, without pauses. Perihelion was commissioned by the Cory Band as their own-choice piece for the 2013 European Brass Band Championships, held in Oslo, Norway. Winning the set piece section of the contest and coming second to Eikanger-Bjorsvik Musikklag with their own choice selection, Cory went on to become European Champions for the fifth time.Cory MD Philip Harper had asked for a 'Concerto for Band' to fully exploit his outstanding band of virtuosi, and composer Philip Sparke created a one-movement work with contiguous sections, first featuring horns and flugel, then trombones followed by cornets and a slower central section for percussion and baritones, euphonium andbasses.The piece is abstract in nature, without a specific programme, and the title merely reflects the fact that the piece was begun on January 2nd 2013, the day of Earth's perihelion - the point in its orbit when it is closest to the sun. It could also be argued that the piece weaves between moments of brilliant optimism and dark shadow, both of which can be the result of bright sunshine. Januar 2013, als Philip Sparke mit dem Schreiben begann, das Perihel der Erde war - der sonnennachste Punkt der Erdumlaufbahn. Man konnte auch sagen, dass sich das Stuck zwischen Momenten strahlenden Optimismus' und dunklen Schatten bewegt, was beides der Wirkung strahlenden Sonnenscheins geschuldet sein kann.

Quatuor No 2 was first performed by the Tana string quartet on April 14, 2013, at Radio France, Paris. I conceived a piece whose principal subject was going to consist in the description of a minuscule sonic element. The description of this tiny initial material would be so precise, so detailed that, deployed on a much larger scale than its original one, it would occupy the entire duration of the piece. At that point, I just had to choose a sound model as the starting point of the piece, the sound that would best characterize the string instruments themselves: the noisy sound produced by the bow barely coming in contact with one of the strings, getting ready to acquire speed, weight, acceleration, and producing a full sound of a violin, a viola or a cello... -Daniel D'Adamo.
