Burungkaka is an Indonesian folk song which is known throughout Malaysia. It is about an old parrot which sits near the window, singing. The children make fun of it in a good-natured manner. Originally arranged in 1997 for virtuoso jazz trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff and the WDR Big Band by Bill Dobbins. Albert had recorded the piece many years earlier on a trio recording of his. Saxes double on flute, clarinet, or bass clarinet. First alto doubles on soprano. Substitute saxophone parts are provided on the reverse side of the woodwind parts. First trumpet goes to C (2 ledger lines above staff).

Originally recorded by Monika Herzig and a cast of musical collaborators from around the globe on her 2016 album, The Whole World in Her Hands, Oh, Muddy Waters is a bluesy call-and-response between bass instruments and the whole ensemble. Monika has arranged the small group version for big band, with modest brass ranges, suggested piano voicings, and solo space for tenor sax and guitar (or piano). Solo transcriptions are provided that match the recording note-for-note. Laid-back, soft syncopations and a rich harmonic language bring to life a composition that builds on that initial bass riff. Here is a beautiful trombone solo feature for jazz ensemble with optional string orchestra. The string parts can easily be replaced or augmented with the included synthesizer part, or the work can be performed with standard big band instrumentation only. Your developing trombone soloist is supported through a series of different scenes with lush, graceful orchestration and an ever-descending harmonic progression. A transcription of the improvised portion of the solo on the recording is provided. An optional marimba part adds depth, color and motion. The top trumpet/flugel note is F-sharp. This is a subtle and mature work for jazz orchestra.
