2222; 4331; timp, 2 perc, pno; stgs Duration: 13'30 Composed: 2016 Published by: Amy Mills Music, LLC Like a modern Pictures at an Exhibition…. Ha Shamayim is an original piece for orchestra that was inspired by photographs taken by the Hubble space telescope. Each section is inspired by one photo; the title of each section is the title that NASA gave to the photograph. The words Ha Shamayim are Hebrew for The Heavens. They are written in Genesis 1:1, In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The words are also seen in Psalm 19. Section I: Warped Edge-On Galaxy ESO 510-G13 The piece begins in outer space with its glistening stars. Glissandi are used to depict the strange but beautiful warp seen in the photograph. Section II: Galaxy Fires at Neighboring Galaxy Suddenly the piece erupts as one galaxy fires blue gas at its neighbor. They engage in a cosmic battle. Section III: Youthful-looking Galaxy May Be an Adult The adolescent galaxy is personified by a humorous, gawky melody reminiscent of teenage boys who walk on feet that are still too big. Occasionally there is an argument with an authority figure, but the joy of exploring the universe quickly returns. Section IV: Star Birth in Galaxy M83 The dramatic photograph looks like a womb with veins. The music begins on one note, then it begins to explore the initial swelling and stretching. It morphs into an energetic fast theme, still growing. Ultimately it becomes glorious and expansive, like the new star. Section V: String of ‘Cosmic Pearls’ Surrounds an Exploding Star The first theme is a happy circle dance inspired by the circle of white dots in the photograph. The second theme is noble and joyful. It is reminiscent of the melody in the famous chorus in Haydn’s The Creation with the words from Psalm 19, The heavens are telling the glory of God. The music then has flashbacks to the earlier sections, and ends in triumph. The five sections in Ha Shamayim are continuous with no breaks. The Respiration of the Earth is inspired by the breathing motion. The music focuses on the tension of the air of breathing. There are many different types of breathing such as slow breath, long breath, short breath, holding breath, uneven breath, etc. The shape of the music is created by the inhale and exhale motion. The piece starts with a long holding breath, gradually create a tension until one can't hold that breath and release the air out. The Suona is acting as the motion of the air so the orchestra has to follow. This piece ends with the chaotic motion so the audiences can feel the tension as if they are running out of breath. It's a main concern about the environment of the Earth so this piece is a message to people to keep the environment clean so the Earth can breath for a longer time. Conductor's scoreElectric Traction is the second offering in a trilogy of urban-inspired symphonic works, and was initially inspired while traveling from Chicago through Northern Indiana via an electric interurban commuter railway. Train sounds are to some degree depicted musically—which is demonstrated throughout by the spinning out of various motoric and textural devices at a very high rate of speed.2,1,2,1,2,1,2,1; 4331; timp, 3 perc, hp, pno/cel; stgs Duration: 6'30 Composed: 2002 Published by: Hutter Music Performance materials available on rental only:.

Ravel needed only two weeks of intensive concentration to orchestrate his piano suite Valses nobles et sentimentales, which was given its premiere performance in March 1911. Consisting of seven waltzes and one epilogue, the work stamped Ravel as a creative personality whose masterpiece breathed an unbelievably new kind of musicality and incredibly intensive poetry. Let us not forget that this was twelve years before La Valse, with which it shares a number of similarities. The new edition of the complete performance material in Breitkopf's Urtext series was prepared by the Ravel expert Jean-Francois Monnard.A l'exemple de Schubert - Ravel re-invents the waltz, inspired by Liszt, Chopin, Schumann and Chabrier, transforming the rhapsodic gyrations of the dance and sending it whirling into the 20th century.

Spinning Jenny is a portrait of Leigh, Lancashire circa 1948 and one of a series of occasional pieces inspired by Davies' youth in Salford. Spinning Jenny Street was a noisy, hazardous street, clangerous with industry and activity when davies was at Grammar school in 1945. A modest work, but one which reflects many aspects of the place, period and people it was inspired by. Commissioned by the BBC, it was first performed on 21st July 199 as part of the BBC promenade concert at the Royal Albert Hall by the BBC Philharmonic conducted by Davies himself. This is the miniature format of the full orchestral score..

Interestingly, Schumann?s Third Symphony was in fact his last symphony, as the fourth symphony was actually composed after the first. The Symphony No.3 in E flat Op.97 was written 1850 during the composer?s tenure as conductor at Dusseldorf on the famous river Rhine. Schumann claimed that the history and spirit surrounding the noble river inspired him when writing the symphony, hence it being called the ?Rhenish? symphony. The symphony was less successful at its premiere in February 1851 (conducted by Schumann himself) than his previous two symphonic premiers had been. This symphony is in five movements, with the ?extra? fourth movement, originally subtitled ?In the style of an accompaniment to a solemn ceremony?, was inspired by a visit to Cologne Cathedral.Available here is a study score of Schumann?s Symphony No.3 in E flat ?Rhenish? Op.97 , which is ideal for study and perusal usage..

Bryce Dessner's Lachrimae was commissioned by the Amsterdam Sinfonietta, the Scottish Ensemble, and the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra. Composer's Note: Lachrimae is a direct reference to John Dowland's work of the same name. I had played that that piece in school on guitar and decided that I wanted to base something on it. Dowland himself adapted the piece several times into different versions and there's also a Benjamin Britten composition based on the same piece of music, so that was part of my inspiration. When I wrote my work I waslistening to string orchestra music and I think Bartok's Divertimento is the pinnacle of string writing. So the piece is kind of equally inspired by Dowland's Rennaissance Lachrimae and by Bartok's Divertimento.

Time is one of the main factors impacting the world and our lives. Einstein saw time as the relationship of the motion of one object relative to the position of another object, as measured through observation. But can we really measure time objectively? Music, the art which moves through time, can affect our perception of time, and can affect each person's perception of time differently. Depending on the emotion it stimulates, music can make time seem to pass quickly or slowly. A composer can use music to convey time to an audience and different musical ideas can create different sensations of time. Absence of Time is a concerto for woodwind quartet and orchestra. It has three main sections (fast, slow, fast), recalling traditional concerto form, but it does not use the solo instruments in the traditional way, i.e., as soloists in contest with the orchestra. Inspired by the idea of juxtaposing different experiences of time, I divided the instruments into two groups: the four soloists and the orchestra. The orchestra functions mostly as the keeper of time (real time) while the quartet of soloists fluctuates (in imaginary time or in the absence of time) around the orchestra's time. While the quartet's instruments do play solos, they also play in ensemble with the orchestra. You could say that they play in both imaginary time (as soloists) and in real time (with the orchestra). In addition to this, the woodwind section of the orchestra plays in conversation with the solo quartet, calling it back to real time. Fusion is achieved at the end of the piece through the use of strong, driving rhythm. Absence of Time was commissioned by the Pacific Symphony and was first performed by the Pacific Symphony and the Pacific Symphony Woodwind Quartet with Carl St. Clair as conductor on October 20, 2016.

Conductor's scoreInspired by the German-born architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the intention was to create an orchestral work that would somehow reflect these urban corporate trophies. The piece as a whole makes use of a very sparse harmonic arsenal—employing simple, cellular collections of pitches. The music is at times very angular, always highly charged with energy, and filled with mechanical imagery.2,1 2,1 2,1 2,1; 4331; timp, 3 perc, hp, pno/cel; stgs Duration: 8'30 Composed: 2001 Published by: Hutter Music Performance materials available on rental only:.

Mendelssohns overture drew its inspiration from two poems by Goethe which had already inspired Ludwig van Beethoven to write a choral work on them with orchestral accompaniment. The larger part of the work on this piece must have been carried out in the summer of 1828. The first public performance took place in Berlin on 1 December 1832. The revised version of the work was first performed in Leipzig on 20 April 1834. Its ranking as No. 3 of the concert overtures was laid down when the score was first printed in 1835 (Breitkopf & Hartel).(Ralf Wehner in the Study Edition of the Mendelssohn Work Catalogue).

Joseph Addison is not particularly well known; he was English, a classical scholar, essayist, poet and politician, but one of his hymns was used by Benjamin Britten. in his setting of a Thomas Tallis canon. The hymn is singularly beautiful and being a composer always inspired by extramusical stimuli such as poems, nature, paintings, I was immediately convinced when I carne across the Addison hymn, that here was exactly what I wanted to use as my major source of inspiration for this piece, commissioned by and written for The Berlin Philharmonic. I don't refer to the hymn in its entirety, but have chosen the following 3 excerpts, all acting as mottos for the first three sections of the piece, thus turning the piece into a straightforward tonepoem in the classical.

Inspired by the joyous optimism of the Kenyan people, this energetic greeting prelude for string orchestra will delight performers and audiences alike with its rhythmic drive and call-and-response echoes. Paul Basler's Kenyan-influenced compositions use call-and-response and motivic manipulation as organizational methods. He reinforces specific pitches by using them frequently and stressing them metrically and rhythmically---using syncopation, regrouping of beats, and changing meter.

Two Mythical Scenes for orchestra was completed in 1956, when Sallinen was Aarre Merikanto's composition student for his second term. The work received its premiere performance only after a good deal of pressure from Prof. Merikanto's side, and was finally premiered in a concert by the Sibelius Academy Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jussi Jalas. The work received opus number 1, as it was the first publicly performed work by Sallinen. The composer has told that he was inspired by a 1947 book published by the Finnish Literary Society (SKS) Myytillisia kuvia (Mythical Scenes/Images). The second movement of the work, Kalmanvaen joulukirkko (The Christmas Service of the Dead) is based on the stories in which the dead rise from their graves early in the Christmas Day morning to attend their own special ceremony led by a dead priest. The opening movement Kulkue (Procession) depicts the dead in a procession towards the church. In 2020 Sallinen revised the score slightly. In his own words with very small changes helping the sixty years younger and less experienced self. The revisions mostly concerned nuances and dynamics, bowings and some bridges. The original structure, rhythmic and harmonic world is still the same as they were when young Sallinen composed the work in 1956.

Quilting, co-commissioned by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, is my first stand alone work for orchestraand is loosely inspired by the American tradition of quilt making. I composed Quilting while living most of last year in Paris.During my time there, I thought a lot about what it means to compose symphonic music as a young American in the 21st century, when so many of the many masterworks which are programmed year in and out by orchestras across the country are European. I considered which artistic traditions defined the American 19th-century. I began to think of the American crafts-tradition of quilting as a foilto the high-art tradition of European orchestral composition. As the score for my new work began to take shape, I started thinking about the manuscript itself as an object, its vertical and horizontal planes create a kind of patterned geometry of their own. Visually the way a musical score is woven together like patchwork brought to mind quilts and the great American tradition of quilting. I imagined about how conducting an orchestra can feellike stitching a piece together, or sewing together a large number of musical ideas and musicians into a coherent and transcendent whole. Quilting was an integral part of American vernacular in the 18th and 19th centuries, the African-American quilting tradition is especially fascinating, and the quilts tell the stories of the women and communities who made them. The names of the quilt patterns themselves can have their own sense of narrative: 'jacobs ladder', 'drunkards path', 'solomon's puzzle', and (my favorite for its relevance to this piece) 'the road to California. - Bryce Dessner.
