Particularly during the early 1740s, Johann Sebastian Bach concentrated intensely on studying the compositional technique of strict vocal polyphony. As an inspiration, he studied the works of older masters, copying them and, for the most part, performing them as well. A set of single parts for the Missa canonica by Francesco Gasparini in an instrumentation by Bach were recently discovered in the collection of the former Ephoralbibliothek Weissenfels; some of the parts are in Bach's own handwriting. Gasparini was esteemed in Germany particularly as a master of elaborate counterpoint and audacious harmonic writing. Bach amended the music text with a view to certain aspects of performance practice, clearly following a very specific concept of sound organization. His interest in strict counterpoint was paralleled by a tangible re-orientation in Bach's own compositional technique at the beginning of the 1740s. Francesco Gasparini's Missa canonica therefore served as a practical model for the highly developed art of canon writing and the strict polyphony in Bach's late works, as we encounter them, for example, in the B minor Mass.

Mendelssohn's setting of Psalm 98 was written in a few weeks to satisfy a commission in his new position as general music director of Prussia and was premiered by the Berlin Cathedral Choir on 1 January 1844. As he neither released the work for publication nor produced a vocal score, his psalm setting did not appear in print until after his death. For this edition the authoritative Mendelssohn specialist John Michael Cooper drew primarily on the autograph score with its many subsequent corrections and amendments. In this way it differs from many other editions, which tend to treat the autograph as a subordinate source. Rounding off the edition are an informative Foreword and a detailed Critical Commentary. The piano reduction is based on the first printed edition, published by F. Kistner and Evers & Co. in 1851.

The cantata is one of the few surviving vocal works which Wilhelm Friedemann Bach composed during the eighteen years which he spent as organist and director of music at the Marktkirche in Halle (1746-1764). This cantata, published here for the first time in more than 250 years, was written to introduce the autumn sermons in 1752. A musically and technically demanding composition, it consists of two substantial choral movements, partly concertante and partly polyphonic, based on two biblical utterances. They surround a sensitive, while at the same time strictly contrapuntal, duet for soprano and alto with basso continuo in which God's sweet teaching for the soul is described as the true manna of the faithful, forming a link with the sermons which are to follow. In the compactness of the musical construction and its intensity of expression W. F. Bach was clearly following in the footsteps of his father in this work. Chorale settings form a central part of Telemann's oeuvre. His 1754 setting of the church hymn Christus, der ist mein Leben, based on Melchoir Vulpius' melody from the Hamburg Hymnal, is especially well-suited to display his mastery in depicting the words of the chorale. The so-called Ausfullungsbass (a vocal bass added to the principal bass in tutti passages) was probably necessitated by the acoustical properties of Hamburg's churches. This is the first Urtext edition of this highly successful chorale setting which is based on Georg Philipp Telemann Musical Works. The score contains a realisation of the continuo part.* First Urtext edition based on Georg Philipp Telemann Musical Works* An attractive addition to the repertoire with a view to the Telemann Year 2017* Bilingual Foreword (Ger/Eng)* Uncluttered idiomatic piano reduction.

Sacred works occupy a large part of Charles Gounod's oeuvre. It was the Messe solennelle en l'honneur de Sainte Cecile that established his fame as a church composer. Its melodic invention and effective handling of the orchestra reveal a close proximity to opera. This Urtext edition is based not only on the original print of 1856 but also on copyists' manuscripts and autograph sources. Rounding off this well-researched Urtext edition are an informative Introduction and a detailed Critical Commentary. The edition is being published to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Gounod's birth.
