Sad Piano features 13 captivating pieces for solo piano by dynamic Australian composer Matthew Hindson. Each piece sits within the ever popular listening trend of sad piano music on streaming platforms and whilst sad and melancholic in mood, has the paradoxical effect of making the player feel comforted and uplifted. Suitable for intermediate to advanced level pianists. I started this collection during the Covid-19 lockdown, when I felt an intense need to write music that was personal and overtly emotional. Each Sad Piano piece explores a different emotion or frame of mind: from inner fury to love and sentimentality to the resilience many of us needed to get through lockdown. Matthew Hindson.

Joachim Raff's 12 piano pieces Fruhlingsboten op. 55, originating in 1852/53, mark a new creative start in his compositional oeuvre, in which the composer left behind his previously written and published piano works. The title of the work, translated as Heralds of Spring, is multilayered: It refers not only to spring in nature as expressed in the headings of the first two pieces, Winterruhe [Hibernation] and Fruhlingsnahen [Spring's Approach], but the words Heralds of Spring also indicate love's spring, the blossoming of love for his future wife, the actress Doris Genast. This appears in the headings of the pieces as of no. 3, sketching the path of an imaginary couple approaching union via various annoyances. And ultimately, Raff saw in his new piano work the harbingers of his future works, created under happy circumstances. In Fruhlingsboten Raff repeatedly demonstrates his ability to adapt idioms and compositional techniques from works by Liszt, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Schumann, and others. The pieces do nonetheless possess their own thoroughly original diction with a character spectrum just as diverse as their stylistic piano design. Mahlert's new edition, as beautifully presented as ever from this publisher, is exemplary, and can easily be recommended to advanced pianists with a love of nineteenth-century repertoire. Superb.(Andrew Eales, Pianodao).

As a young composition student at the Curtis Institute of Music, my teacher, Gian Carlo Menotti, suggested that I write some music for children. He believed that, when writing for children, a composer would soon discover what was true and honest and what was shallow artifice. I was soon to discover that he was right. One of my first published works was a children's ballet entitled The Enchanted Lake. In 1966, I published my first series of piano pieces for children, A Lexicon of Beasties. They were dedicated to my daughters. I now have a 12-year-old son. It seemed fitting that I now write some pieces for him. He plays and enjoys these. It is my hope that they will give pleasure to many others. (1) SHADOW RIDGE RAG - A spirited dance with infectious syncopation and some charming harmonic surprises. (2) THE RIVER - An elegant new setting of a lovely English folk song. (3) FLASH and DASH - A showy, extroverted piece filled with energy and unexpected glissandi.

The music releases pieces of vivid sound one after another into the performance space. It is a baby's march - right foot, left foot, step by step. Innocent, audaciously powerful and immature, the toddler walks planting each step firmly on the ground. Based on a constant beat, the music is deformed with digital and pop expressions. Cute and pop contents and textures are produced and consumed on a massive scale every day. I find beauty in such artificial textures around us. Into this piece of music I put my love and prayers for children and future generations to come. Akiko Yamane.

Elgar's delightful Salut d'Amour, one of his earliest successes, dates from 1889, when Elgar had just turned 30: this proved to be a year of great happiness for him, for at that time he married Caroline Alice Roberts - a lady who was to mean so much to him as man and musician. It is not too fanciful to hear, in this charming piece, a musical manifestation of his love for her. This arrangement for piano retains al the beauty of the original.
