It is based on Robert Tressell's famous socialist novel, The Ragged-Trousered Philanthropists, which describes the trials and tribulations, the humour and the marriages of working-class life in Edwardian England. This powerful book has been allied to a powerful score and the show ends with the show's hero, Will Easton, exorting all the working men - painter and decorators - to embrace socialism and overthrow the bosses. In this Song of Socialism, the men start marching to a new destiny. It never happened in England of course, but it did elsewhere! The composer has now arranged this stirring march for Concert Band.

The principal post-Romantic Danish composer, Carl Nielsen, was born in 1865, the son of a painter and village musician. Childhood experience as an amateur performer led to subsidised study at the Copenhagen Conservatory and a long career during which he developed his own personal style of composition, in particular in a series of important symphonies. This string quartet includes score and parts.

The starting point was the collected letters of Vincent van Gogh. In spite of the tragedies for which van Gogh is best known, his letters are filled with joyous exuberance for the practical considerations of his work: what he will paint next and, most importantly, what colours he will use. For Julian Anderson, it seems the painter relishes 'the sheer stuff of which his art is made'. In Van Gogh Blue, Anderson relishes the sheer stuff of which his own art is made. Its a very physical, highly contrasted work about the joy of sound. Instrumental colour plays a large role, and Andersons use of two mobile clarinetists allows extra colour as their sound moves through the acoustic space of the hall.

The Composer writes: 'In February 1987 I saw in the Tate Gallery in London a painting by the Victorian English painter John William Waterhouse. The painting kept haunting my memory, and as I at the same time planned to write a piece for solo Viola, my ideas for the music and the memory of the painting fused more and more. I decided, then, to let my piece borrow the title of Waterhouse's painting: The Lady Of Shalott. The picture of a mad-like, pale, and perhaps singing woman alone in a boat without sculls, which calmly slips out from the rush growth of the river is an illustration for the ending of Alfred Tennyson's poem by the same title, which again plaits into the old English legends about King Arthur. My piece tries to meander - like the river at Camelot - among these sources.' As suggested above the piece was originally written for Viola solo. This version for String Quartet is from 1993.

Work for Guitar. The composer writes: 'The title of this tiny little piece came to me out of my fascination of a picture by the French painter Jean-Francois Millet, entitled L'ANGELUS It features two praying people listening to the evening bells. My Angelus-Bells were later on squeezed into a waltz-like rhythm. The piece was written by request of and is dedicated to David Starobin.'.

Bite the Bullet by Mexican-American composer Jorge Machain was named 2019-2020 winner of acclaimed “The American Prize†for music, in addition to being a finalist in the 2018 NBA Revelli competition. The work was inspired by a painting by Venetian artist, Carlo Marchiori, which depicts two Pulcinelli (Venetian clowns) engaged in a gun battle. As the bullets meet in the middle of the scene, a colorful and vibrant cloudburst is created. Using a unique sonic color scheme, the brass and percussion portray the gunshots, while the woodwind flourishes emulate the painter's vibrant brush strokes. Commissioned and recorded by the UNLV Wind Orchestra – Thomas G. Leslie, conductor, featured on the Klavier recording “Quaternity†K11123.
